Mentoring for FAC

Howdy, I am looking for a mentor to help me improve my Saving Light article so it could become a featured article. It had previously undergone fairly large edits (26,000 bytes to 41,000 bytes) and to have someone go over it, as well as the entire article, to make sure it is ready to become a Featured article candidate. The article had also undergone four previous featured article nominations, two failed because not enough people voted and the other two failed because the article wasn't ready. I'm not totally sure if you would like to, or even could, help me with the article, but if you can, that would be great. If not, then please ping me so I can just ask another mentor.   • "Best Original Trance track of 2017 by the r/EDM subreddit." - Is a fan vote on reddit notable? I don't think so.
  • I'm not 100% sure, but I put it in pretty much because it was reliably sourced. If I was to add another reference, (such as this one or this one) would it be fine or should I just remove it no matter the reference count?

  • (Writing) - you refer to the writers by first name in the first 2 paragraphs, but should be last name like the 3rd
  • This was something I don't know what to do with, as the section refers to both Gareth Emery and Roxanne Emery, and simply saying Emery within context may seem confusing (as they are siblings with the same last name).
  • Ah, that makes sense. I had that problem in an article once (John Carmack and Adrian Carmack, no relation) and just spelled out their full names, though in that case there was another John besides.
  • That seems like a good solution. I've changed it to use their full names in the first two paragraphs. The third paragraph does use one full name, though since the next instance of Emery refers to Gareth (and Roxanne isn't mentioned again) it switches back to last names.
  • "four minutes and thirty-six second" - seconds
  • Fixed.
  • "Writers for Earmilk and EDM Identity described the song as "uplifting"" - sounds weird, given that you've been calling the genre "uplifiting trance" - might want a synonym instead
  • Replaced "uplifting" with "emotional" and re-worded the entire sentence so it doesn't seem quote heavy.
  • "On 24 January 2017, Monstercat announced via YouTube that Emery and Standerwick would release "Saving Light" the following Monday. It was released as a digital download on 30 January 2017" - wordy and kind of trivial- "they said they would release it in a week. Then they did." - the release announcement isn't noteworthy given the release was shortly after and went as planned
  • Now that I see it, it does seem a bit silly. I've gotten rid of the announcement bit entirely.
  • "to support the anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label." - you just defined what the charity was a sentence prior. Actually, the whole first paragraph of "Make Trance No. 1 Again" just repeats the end of the previous section
  • Not sure how nobody noticed that before. Got rid of the bit in the first section.
  • "At the end of the year, it was revealed that it became the best-performing trance song in digital sales on Beatport." - wordy and a bit vague. "It was the highest-selling trance song of 2017 on Beatport."
  • Replaced with what you wrote. It did sound like it was the highest performing trance song ever on Beatport.
  • Unsure that the Lawrence drama is really notable, but I don't know much about how big a name he is in the field.
  • I can see why, as it only has one reference. As it does have a reliable source, I think it'll be fine, but just in case I've shortened it and merged it with the first paragraph.
  • It's odd to have reception of the remixes before you get to the "reception" section for the original version- maybe move that into that section, or move "Remixes" after "Critical reception"
  • I've moved the remixes bit after critical reception.
  • Speaking of, I don't know what the standards are for reception sections in song articles, but I'm used to it just being "Reception"
  • Looking at the featured articles S&M and Diamonds, it being called "critical reception" seems fine. It can be called reception if combined with other sections though, such as Smells Like Teen Spirits' "release and reception".
  • (A State of Trance 2017 and Tune of the Year) - 3 of the 4 sentences here are just, very elaborately, saying that it was voted song of the year on Van Buren's show. It's not really important for understanding to explain what date voting was opened and what date the top-50 list was announced.
  • I've shortened it, now only containing the context, reveal, and the "non-trance label" bit.
  • "During the tour, Haliene would make guest appearances" - tense switch, just "made appearances"
  • Done.
Overall, my recommendation prior to any FAC would be to go over the article, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, and try to rewrite the same ideas with less words. The article has the (very common) problem of being roundabout in describing things instead of getting to the point, and with padding out short bits with extraneous details. I've found User:Tony1/Redundancy exercises: removing fluff from your writing to be an excellent guide towards tightening up article writing. --PresN 16:02, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

I've gone over the article and removed/changed bits and pieces to get to the point, though I suck at this and relied on peer reviews and copy editors to do a much better job than me.   • I've gone through the article and fixed/re-worded a bunch of stuff and got rid of the descriptive stuff (I think) you mentioned. If there are any more specific issues you can point out, please do. I am also thinking of doing another copy edit to pretty much finalise the article, though I don't know if it is needed or not.   • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

New rules for the New Article Announcements?

Hi PresN, I don't understand your recent edit here. It looks like you removed links to a number of new articles that were created between Dec 26, 2019 and Dec 31, 2019 and you replaced many of them with old articles. For example Pochi and Nyaa (created by Amitie 10g on Dec 26, 2019), Music of Grim Fandango (created by Al83tito on Dec 31, 2019), etc. were deleted in your 13 Jan 2020 edit. Meanwhile ESL Pro League which seems to have been created by Valoem on 17 February 2018‎ and Hadouken which was created by Zxcvbnm on 24 March 2010‎ and has been stable since 27 June 2010‎ were added into the New article announcements for December 2019. I've set my account up with a time offset of +00:00 which I believe defaults to the server time but it also appears that articles like All Ghillied Up (recreated by Spy-cicle at 23:06 , 28 December 2019), Ghoul Panic (created by Namcokid47 at 20:24, 29 December 2019), and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark (created by Alexandra IDV at 11:02, 30 December 2019) seem to have been changed from Dec 28 to Dec 29, Dec 29 to Dec 30, and Dec 30 to Dec 31 respectively. Was that an error or have the rules for New Article Announcements changed?

I've been trying to basically rely on your edits quarterly so that I can report NAAs for the WP:VG Newsletter, and that often means manually adding articles from AlexNewArtBot's "VideogamesSearchResult" updates to close the quarter. But it seems like I may be creating more problems than help. I have always been a little unsure about dating NAAs when the article is unstable (e.g. when the first edit in an article's history is a redirect, when an old article without proper sourcing is redirected and then later revived with good sources, etc.), but isn't the basic rule that New article announcements for December 2019 is supposed to announce newly created articles like "Pochi and Nyaa" and "Music of Grim Fandango" on the day they were created? I assume I'm missing some kind of subtlety here. Does a "new article" only count when there is some internal action (e.g some behind-the-scenes official recognition of the article's existance by the encyclopedia like a shift from draftspace to mainspace or from unassessed to assessed or something) that makes the article an "official" article? How does the semi-automated tool you're using work? -Thibbs (talk) 14:17, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

@Thibbs: Hey, so, I think the difference between when things show up in my "NAA" posts vs. AlexNewArtBot is because AlexNAB scans new articles upon creation and then adds them to the list, but my posts are based on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Video game articles by quality log, which itself is based on things being added to the right talk page categories- e.g. the talk page tag being added or updated. I see that Pochi and Nyaa actually first appears there on January 2, because the talk page template was only added during Jan 1 (and it updates once a day). Same for Music of Grim Fandango- you tagged it on the 1st, and it shows up on the next day's list. They both are listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/New article announcements in January. This "talk page tag" source is also the root of the old articles showing up- ESL Pro League and Hadouken may be old, but didn't get tagged until December 27, so they showed up on the quality log and therefor my list the next day. Things show up on my list if a tag appears or is changed from "redirect/disambig" to something else.
So, the difference boils down to my list is the list of new "WPVG articles", while AlexNAB's list is new "video game articles". You filling out the end of the quarter with the second doesn't cause any problems; the only reason I overwrote it was to keep a consistent data source, but it's not something I care greatly about. --PresN 16:12, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Ah that explains it. I wanted to make sure that nothing went unaccounted for and it seems like your system does keep track of it all even if on different days.   Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

  Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

  Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

FAC help with a video game article

Hello! Apologies for the random message. I was thinking about nominating the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wrath of the Darkhul King for a FAC sometime this year, but I have never done one for a video game article. I am more much familiar with music and television articles in the FAC space.

After looking through the FAC mentoring page, I noticed your inclusion on the list with a focus on video games. I was wondering (if you had the time) to look at the article to see if it would be prepared for a FAC sometime this year. I believe that I have found all of the coverage for this particular game. My biggest concern is that the "Development and release" section is rather small, simply because information about these aspects of the game are relatively small.

  • In video game articles, typically the gameplay section comes before plot
  • I put the "Plot" section first to provide the full context for the characters before more casually referencing them in the "Gameplay" section. Aoba47 (talk) 22:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • "It does not have bonus content for completion." - It's a bit odd to list out something it doesn't have
  • "Wrath of the Darkhul King was developed by Natsume" - in the context of the rest of this sentence, this sounds like a person, not a Japanese video game company
  • "THQ handled the publishing in Agoura Hills, California." - kind of an odd aside, as the physical location of the publishing company is generally trivial.
  • "the game was shipped to North American stores the following month" - the next month would be July, but the very next sentence says it came out in late June. Needs clarification.

  • Video game articles typically do not talk about individual country's ratings unless there's something notable about them, nor that the game has a manual, again unless there's something notable about them
  • To be honest, the development section reads like you couldn't find much information about the actual development, and so scraped the barrel for any information about the release timeline.
  • That is true to be honest. Would the lack of information on the game's actual development prevent it from passing through the FAC? I honestly do not believe there is any more information out there as I have done multiple deep-dive searches. Aoba47 (talk) 22:35, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Typically the section title is just "Reception", not "Critical reception"
  • While not disallowed, listing out the metacritic/gamerankings scores as numbers (as opposed to the verbal summary) is frowned on. Using Gamerankings at all, actually, in prose or the reception box is frowned on unless its score is notable different from MC's so as not to be duplicative
  • You'll probably get poked at at FAC for the uncited "thesis sentences" like "The gameplay was criticized." Check out some video game FAs for examples of how to reword them to not be standalone synthesis.
  • I have seen some articles, like Panzer Dragoon Saga, use topic sentences, but I also understand the WP:SYNTH concerns. Aoba47 (talk) 22:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Opinions vary, but you'll likely get comments on the use of "review outlet X said blah", as opposed to "Joe Reviewer of review outlet X said" or "A review from review outlet X said". Up to you what you want to do about it.
  • I have seen some FAs take out the names ot just focus on the website/publications, but I can understand both sides. Aoba47 (talk) 22:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • There's a lot of repetition of short sentences structured like "X said a. Y said b. Z said c.". Try combining similar statements or playing with sentence structure.
  • Minor: the "References (Citations / Book source)" section headers are unusual, and the "Book source" especially reads oddly. I personally like just doing "References" and "Sources", though other systems exist as well.
  • I have personally used this system to distinguish between web sources and book/article sources, but since writing this article, I have tried to go more for the Wikipedia:HARVARD style. Aoba47 (talk) 23:49, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Overall summary: the best things you could do prior to an FAC are to try to round up more development information and to do a copyedit pass for flowing prose, as opposed to just grammatically correct prose. Your carnivore family lists (WP:Featured list candidates/List of procyonids/archive1) are fantastic. Does your table-creating script exist here on en.wp? If so, I'd like to fiddle around with it to see what it could do with plant families. - Dank (push to talk) 03:37, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

@Dank: Yeah, I haven't spent any time packaging it for use by other people or put it on github, as I just made it to help myself, but there's 2 python scripts: User:PresN/taxolistgenerator has WPTaxoListGenerator.py, which takes a family name and tries to build a structured json file, using Wikidata, MSW3, IUCN, and Wikipedia (for images). It's geared towards animals, and fails hard if it can't find an MSW3 id for a family... which of course non-mammals won't have, to say nothing of plants. Technically it's not needed, though, I started off making the json by hand. Either way, you feed the json to User:PresN/taxolistbuilder (WPTaxoListBuilder.py), which is much shorter- it just takes the json and tries to build wikitables out of it. It does some handy things like resize images to not stretch the tables and count how many species/subspecies are in a box in addition to enforcing formatting.
Like I said, though, I haven't tried to package it up for other people with coding experience to use, much less made it easy to use for non-programmers. Do you have any experience with python or programming? --PresN 04:11, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Scripts aside, though, as part of this project I also created the {{Species table}} / {{Species table/row}} / {{Species table/end}} trio of templates, which in my opinion are much easier to edit than bare wikitables and help with making a list of any species. They're also geared towards animals in terms of wording (hunting/habitat), but that's easy enough to fork to a {{Plant species table/row}}. --PresN 04:17, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

While I'm here, can I pick your brain about one of my FL reviews, WP:Featured list candidates/List of World Heritage Sites in Finland/archive1? The nominator doesn't want to provide any text (other than hovertext) that tells the reader what, for instance, "582" means. They believe that since other tables have done the same, it should be good enough. I would think at a minimum we'd want to see "Ref. No." in the column header, or better yet, something in a Key explaining what the numbers mean. Is this a reasonable ask, per the FL criteria? (I'm not going to quote you on this unless you want to be quoted.) - Dank (push to talk) 04:32, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Dank: Ironically, I think that's partially my fault- 2 years ago at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of World Heritage Sites in Montenegro/archive1 I said '"UNESCO data (Ref; criteria)" is hard to parse- it's doing too much for a column header, and also not enough. I'd go with just "UNESCO data", and add a footnote (with {{efn}}) to explain that it has both the UNESCO reference id and the criteria that it fulfills; you need more than a couple words for that, and a footnote gives you all the space you need while not overfocusing a top-of-table note on a single column.' I guess they're going with hover text instead of a footnote? I'd still prefer a footnote, to be honest, but a key would work as well. --PresN 04:41, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
  •   Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
  •   Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
  •   Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
  •   CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
  • The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included   L293D,   Kingsif,   Enwebb,   Lee Vilenski and   CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. @Thibbs: Well, looks like you have the start of A-class, and I guess you're just tracking when the newsletter reported totals, but as an aside, the automated assessment tables started running for WikiProject Computer and Video games on June 12, 2006 (at the now deleted Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Computer and video game articles by quality statistics), which was transcluded onto at least Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment when it started in January 2007 and probably somewhere else before. DMC4 Special Edition

While working in Devil May Cry 4 I found there was a lot of content about its updated form released about five years later (Special Edition) for new consoles. As a result, I worked in a sandbox to see if it has potential.Here you can read the sandbox. I'm not sure if it's okay if Special Edition could have its own article but I think it might be the best at least for the vanilla one. I asked in the project and discord but no responses yet. @Tintor2: I think it's good to go, you have a decent size dev and reception section and while the differences may be borderline, they do exist, it's more than a remaster with upgraded textures. Hi PresN - sorry to chase but I'm wondering if there's anything more I need to do with the FLC for this, Grade II* listed buildings in Monmouthshire? It's been up a month now and has four Supports, an Accessibility review and a Passed Source review. I did ask on the FLC Talkpage whether it needed an Image review but haven't had a reply. I'd quite like to wrap it up fairly shortly if possible as I've an FAC I'm keen to get to and, being a bear of little brain, I can't multi-task two FAs. Grateful for any advice. Could you let me know what other things I could do to expand/improve past a FL nomination?   • You don't need to twist the lead sentence to get the exact phrase "2019 in cue sports", which would help not repeating cue sports twice.
  • "event's still" - no apostrophe
  • There's a spaced-dash on 27 April – 7 May in pool, rest are unspaced. There's a few more in Snooker.
  • In the references you italicize some but not all sources, and sometimes use a bare url as the source- maybe that is their name, but for example I'd expect to see AZBilliards.com, not azbilliards.com, as they seem to capitalize it like that on their website.
  • The tables themselves seem good. I'd maybe mention more about the tournaments in the lead beyond the 4 world tournaments. --PresN 21:47, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Could you help me look at the Start articles, and identify how many are actual Starts? From my reading of the criteria, most of them are actually C level already, because almost all of them have half a dozen references or more, and nearly all are correctly formatted and in generally an encyclopedic tone. “Content gaps” is the first thing a C article is listed as having, and no reliable sources is the first thing a Start-level article is listed as having, so that would make most of our Starts actually C’s! New video game articles section

Hi there. I recently created a section in Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games for the SpongeBob SquarePants video games article, however I noticed that a few days later you followed up with a new section called "New articles in April 2020". My article was published on April 19th, and although I see it on the AlexNewArtBot list, I don't see it on yours, which is said to be more accurate. @Osh33m: Timing, mostly. You created the article on the 19th, but didn't put the talk page template on until the 20th. The 1.0 bot picked up that talk page addition (or rather, the new inclusion of your article into the WPVG articles-by-quality categories) in the daily run at the start of April 21, as seen at the log, and then my script uses that page to generate the list. Even though I didn't post my list until the start of April 21, I only ran it for April 13-19 (I was a bit late this week), so it just missed your article. It will pick up your article next week (April 20-26), and assign it to the 20th- just verified that.
The reason it shows up for AlexNewArtBot earlier is because the 1.0 bot is tracking wikiproject additions, but Alex looks at articles upon creation and guesses what the subject matter is. Yours is clearly about a video game, which is not quite the same thing as being covered by WPVG, which is why I don't use that bot. --PresN 19:51, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

The main reason I want to bring attention to it is because I need help filling sections of the article; namely the Development, Gameplay, and opening. WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  •   Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  •   Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  •   The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  •   Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  •   Lee Vilenski with 869 points,   Hog Farm with 801,   Kingsif with 719,   SounderBruce with 710,   Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and   MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Botanical Latin adjectives (T–Z)

Quick question: when John and I have finished the lists such as Botanical Latin adjectives (T–Z) for G through Z, is it acceptable to nominate one of the lists at WP:FLC, as long as A through F are finished within say 3 weeks? Assuming you're referring to the Stearn's FLC comments, I think the question is actually "what would it take for Reywas92 not to oppose over it", which is not a question I can answer. @Judgesurreal777: The {{As of}} template does that; it's the bit in Reception: "As of April 2020, the series has sold over 154.5 million units worldwide." (I know because I removed it from a few other articles a few days ago). I'd just un-template it; the as of template is supposed to be used for things that go out of date and should be regularly updated, like how many runs have been scored in an ongoing baseball season, but series sales are not something that's regularly available. --PresN 01:36, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

    • @Judgesurreal777: Nah, I think they're all probably legit and different. Characters of the Final Fantasy XIII series, fo instance, looks like it's a magazine article that doesn't have a title set. It definitely should- it at least has a page number so it's findable, but not having a title is a legit error. I'm not sure there's a cite template out there where "title" isn't required, it's one of the most important fields. --PresN 19:45, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
      • The annoyance is that all 8 of them are from Japanese magazines, so getting (and writing!) the title is a huge pain. Zack Fair is the only one that's really bad, though, since it doesn't even have a page number, just the magazine name and month. May be worth just putting in a filler title for these, even if it's wrong- if it's clearly an interview with someone, maybe put the title as "Person X interview" just to fill in the field. The purpose of the cite fields is to make the source findable, after all, and "Person X interview on page 50 of issue whatever" is pretty clear. --PresN 19:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

For clarity, ProtoDrake appears to be not long from replacing the whole Unlimited SaGa article, such as his wont, so that issue may be gone soon, and I asked Tintor2 to find the untitled sources titles for the sources he added to Zack Fair and Sephiroth. Someone has put cleanup tags on the legacy section for months, and wont produce the references they say will “fix” it. I say months is enough, and have removed them, with explanation on the talk page to either produce them, or don’t, but you cant just have cleanup tags on an FA forever and then withhold help, as the user appears to be doing. @Judgesurreal777: Ugh. I don't even disagree with them about such vague statements needing stronger/clearer sources, and I very much don't think that being an FA exempts any article from being tagged, but the sheer wordiness of everything they say is giving me a headache. Lengthy comments in the cite needed tags, entire essays on the talk page, "oh, I have citations, but I want you, my friend, to find citations yourself"... Bleh. The article could definitely be improved and tightened up, but once again we find an editor who manages to spend a lot of people's time discussing an issue in a circle without actually fixing even one problem. That's frankly my pet peeve on Wikipedia; I agree with dropping the tags and starting fresh. @Judgesurreal777: I'm torn. On one hand, it's really an obvious eyesore on the index page- a pack of five Start articles + 2 junky lists. On the other, it is a little unorthodox to merge five distinct manga/anime series together just because they're based on the same video game franchise- WP:ANIME seems to have it's own sprawling norms, which is why I haven't re-merged the two lists even though they add literally nothing beside chapter/episode titles. I guess I'm in favor- it doesn't seem like, after a decade of no real improvement, anyone is going to swoop down and write good articles on a bunch of mediocre obscure series, but it does seem like it would take a lot of work to make the resulting article be a cohesive whole, since you'd have to tie them together in how they're related beyond having Dragon Quest in the names. --PresN 02:22, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

It’s also a question of where to merge, into the main Dragon Quest article, or the list of dragon quest media, or a new article? I’m not sure either.

I also think we should create and “Early Square games” article and a “square Enix mobile exclusive” article. We need these kind of parent articles to merge the stubby article together into. With the Starts dwindling to a near impossible core, that I will never give up on, I want to suggest that it is time for a “articles B or above” bar graph for the index and the main wikiproject page, and change the guidance to all new articles should immediately become C’s not Starts. Front Mission 2089-II ProtoDrake says he found nothing for this article, so that’s like ten votes for merger. He says the best place is Front Mission 2089, since our article to merge is its sequel. Especially for a series that the more I research it, the less successful it seems to have been. Left Alive was very ambitious but had bad guys that jumped in the air when they died, like it’s the original Goldeneye or something, so the gameplay defeated it. @Judgesurreal777: Fixed- it was a holdover from someone originally using an archive.org link as a url, and when the archive bot came through it just marked the url as "unfit" because you're not supposed to do that but it doesn't fix it for you without a human looking at it- looks like it got fixed at some point but the "url-status=unfit" was left. --PresN 23:31, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Updated, though it's not as dramatic as you may hope- not only does the graph cover 13 years, so the last month is pretty short, but a the date cutoff is right at 00:00 June 1, and the next two days saw almost half of the drop in starts. I need some guidance on what’s reliable or not. Video game Music Database? Video game music online? Cocobiz? Square Music Online? The artists own website? Other ones? VGMdb: no, it's user-contributed without editors (though, I generally assume it's correct). Cocoebiz: it's Iwata's old personal site, yeah? SEMO: that got moved to vgmonline.net years back (though maybe not everything moved?) That's an RS. Artist's own websites are presumed reliable but don't count for notability. I think we only had it because it was part of the default set. It was "better than GA, but not nominated for FA yet", and the VG project had a process for getting an article reviewed as A-class, but that was barely used. Without a process, it's a meaningless distinction- if you think something is better than GA, might as well nominate it for FA.   • Weird- [2] - it's new reviews/news, written for what was happening 30 years ago as if they were writing then. So it's a review of Rad Racer written as if it had just come out and they didn't know about any newer games. Well. I'm wondering that a plenty of FAs/GAs you (and many other WPVG veterans) have contributed to, but just a few of DYKs have got. In contrast, in my wiki, most of senior editors wrote dozens of DYKs, but only promoted several FAs/GAs (which also expanded in their personal sandboxes, and published as new articles for DYK nominee). As you know, DYK is not a high bar - even Start-Class articles can be successful nominated - and a GA absolutely meet a DYK's requirements (at least in content). That is to say, you seasoned editors could have nominated many of your FAs/FLs/GAs to DYKs, but I found nobody did it.

So my question is, why seasoned editors lack of the motivation? For instance, considered DYK as newcomers' training ground?--Lopullinen 15:25, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

@Lopullinen: I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, I like writing articles to make them as good as possible- to that end, GA/FA is getting other people to review the articles to make sure they're good. DYK, on the other hand, is just advertising a new article on the main page- I just don't usually find it enticing enough to spend the time making a nomination and reviewing someone else's. --PresN 16:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
