File:Eros and Civilization.jpg

I'm confused: why do you want this deleted? Just upload the new image, without the unsightly bottom-right lines, on top of the current image — simple quality improvements like removing unsightly lines from edges are an exception to our general prohibition on uploading over current images, and in fact you're actively encouraged to upload over the current one. Nyttend (talk) 02:49, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

I tried to do exactly that, but it didn't work properly. Look at the file history, and the revision history of the Eros and Civilization article. The file still looks just as bad there as it did before. So, I'd like to start afresh with a totally new file and see if that fixes things. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:51, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
The image versions look different to me. You're probably experiencing a caching issue; hours after I uploaded a new version of File:UTC hue4map USA-IN.svg, it still looked like the old one. If you have access to another computer, one which has never viewed this image recently, check it there; if the problem still persist there, or if you wait a day or more only to find the problem persisting on your main computer, deletion will be more appropriate. Better yet, you could upload the file under a new name, change the link in the article, and redirect the old title to the new one. It's generally not a good idea to delete images that are in use, and uploading under a new name would obviate that problem. Finally, please note that all revisions of a page will show the current revision of an image used therein; as far as I know, you can't cause a page to display an old edition of an image or of a transcluded template. Nyttend (talk) 03:05, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Well, the problem is that the improved image looks different if you view it at full size, but it looks just the same as the previous version if you view it as a thumbnail. And it made no difference at all to the appearance of the article. But thanks for the advice; I'll try what you suggest. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Again, a caching issue. Because you reuploaded with a new filename, I've redirected the old filename to the new one, and we should be all done now. Nyttend (talk) 23:46, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Pics?

Check out barbazu, spinagon, diakk, cloud dragon, mist dragon, shadow dragon, grugach, and valley elf. 99.102.236.90 (talk) 13:17, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, these articles are quite likely to be redirected or deleted. There's little that I can do about that, and I'm not really inclined to try. However, so long as the articles aren't being considered for deletion, I will provide pictures soon, if I can find them. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 23:50, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Life Against Death

Hello there Polisher of Cobwebs! Thank you for getting in touch with me; I've had a look at the Life Against Death page – for which I congratulate you, as it's really rather good – and have a few tips that I hope shall be of benefit to you. If I may, I'll post them here on your user talk page, although feel free to copy and paste them to the Life After Death talk page (attributing them to me), if you like:

Introduction:

  • As it stands, the introduction currently consists of only a single paragraph; ideally, it should really be divided up and expanded into three or four paragraphs (see the example over at Dreamtime (Duerr book), which I put together pretty much single-handedly).
  • "is a book by Norman O. Brown, first published in 1959, with a second edition in 1985" – what kind of book is it: a novel? a psychoanalytical study? a historical study? This needs to be clarified. And who is Norman O. Brown and what is his nationality? Who published this book, and who republished it ? Was it originally published in the English language, or was it translated into it ? If so, who was the translator ? All of these things should be included in your first introductory paragraph.
  • In your second and perhaps third paragraph, provide a very basic synopsis of the book, describing its primary arguments.
  • In your final introductory paragraph, discuss the reception, legacy and influence of the book.
  • Why use the 1970 edition in the photograph ? Ideally, use the first edition cover.

Background

  • Who is Brown and why does his opinion matter ? Give a little bit of biographical information about this author.
  • Similarly, who is Freud ? Again, a sentence of two of biography would be of help; always assume that the reader knows basically nothing about the subject.
  • Again, who is Marcuse and why does he matter ?
  • Who is Paul Robinson ?
  • Are these psychoanalysts arguing that Freud was a social conservative, fiscal conservative or an all-round conservative ?
  • "Jakob Böhme and William Blake" need to link somewhere.

Synopsis

  • Much of this page could do with being linked; words like Nietzche, Eros and Thanatos should be linked to their Wikipedia articles.
  • Would any images be relevant here ? Does the Life Against Death book actually contain any pictures, one of which could be used here ?

Could other quote boxes be employed in later parts of the article ? They add a bit of colour and are aesthetically pleasing for many readers, myself included.

Hope this helps! Midnightblueowl (talk) 17:00, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your response. It does help. I'm aware that the article has problems that need ironing out, and I'm ready to make whatever changes are required; I value other editors' criticism. I'll certainly take your comments into consideration. As for the picture of the book, the 1970 edition is there because, frankly, I happen to like it, and prefer it to other editions of the book. I would be perfectly prepared to change it to a different edition, however. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 20:23, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Spaces in headings

I noticed that in this edit and this one you removed the spaces between the equals signs and the headings, referring to WP:MOSHEAD in your edit summary. But MOSHEAD actually says "Spaces between the equal signs and the heading text are optional, and will not affect the way the heading is displayed". So I suggest that those particular cobwebs do not need to be polished? -- John of Reading (talk) 06:22, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

I am well aware of the fact that spaces in section headings are optional and do not affect the appearance of articles. That doesn't mean that there is no legitimate reason for changing them from one form to the other. Articles should be consistently formatted, and there can be no advantage to sometimes having spaces within section headings and sometimes not within a single article. The wish to eliminate such inconsistencies is the main reason why I have made such changes. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 09:05, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Monsters

See shadow dragon, and I also got firefriend, foo creature, froghemoth, gloomwing, gorgimera, and greenhag. Thanks for your hard work! 70.166.140.88 (talk) 03:57, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome. I won't be providing pictures for those articles right away, but I will soon, so long as they aren't nominated for deletion. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:59, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Page Numbers in the Wikipedia Page About the Book

Specifically looking at Of Grammatology -- rather than what either of us did recently, why don't we just use inline numbers? I feel like this is a reasonable thing to do for the page about the book, cuts down on load time, cuts down on reader hassle, is not really confusing because the page is about the book... what do you think? groupuscule (talk) 05:41, 29 August 2012 (UTC) P.S. " "Foucauldian" is the more common term "

Do you have a source for this, or is this just something you've noticed at various links/books in general? Byelf2007 (talk) 30 August 2012

I could equally ask you if you have a source for your preferred version. "Foucauldian" is definitely the more elegant of the two forms, and I see no reason to change it. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 22:05, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I have the same impression as PoC. Also, this. Maybe it's because "Foucaultian" looks like it might rhyme with "new potion" and not "melodian".

Ayn Rand

If you have a problem with sections, please refute them with justifications and surgically remove them. There is nothing inaccurate in my edits. You and others are not even allowing me time to assemble citations. It's only been about 45 minutes since I started making edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.83.5.102 (talk) 03:45, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Please see WP:EDITWAR. You can't continue to edit war in this way. Stop, or you will be blocked. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:48, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
In case you didn't notice, the lead changes you just reverted are very similar to the ones from the earlier edit war, and the new IP address geolocates near where the previous one did, so it is probably the same editor again. --RL0919 (talk) 22:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I hadn't noticed. Thanks for pointing it out. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:18, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

WP:MOSHEAD

I am not sure what you read in WP:MOSHEAD that caused you to take out spaces from headings in this edit. MOSHEAD says: "Spaces between the equal signs and the heading text are optional, and will not affect the way the heading is displayed." There is no difference in display between either style. Elizium23 (talk) 06:01, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm aware of that. I simply think that formatting should be consistent. Quite often, it isn't consistent even within a single article - one often finds articles in which there is sometimes space in section headings and sometimes not. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 06:03, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
As a further comment on this, I'd like to point out that "optional" presupposes that something can be changed. I have chosen to change it. You are quite welcome to revert me if you don't like my formatting changes - I generally don't care, and in most cases I won't consider reverting back. I would only request that you keep the presence or absence of white space in section headings consistent within articles. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 06:17, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Freud page dispute

PoC: After allowing more than 48 hours for responses to my proposed paragraph in the Science section, replacing that devoted entirely to Levy, I posted it only to have it immediately reverted by Almanacer, before I even had a chance to respond to his criticisms of it. As I say on the Talk page, I have taken on board one of Almanacer's points, and replaced two of my citations with two more appropriate ones, and reinstated my paragraph. Given his track record, the chances are that Almanacer will again revert it in favour of his Levy paragraph. If so, I am at a loss to know where to go from here. Do you have any ideas? Esterson (talk) 19:16, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

I have yet to look carefully at the latest round of editing at that article. I will do so in one moment. Generally speaking, however, the right way of dealing with disputes of this kind is to try to establish the views of other editors and the larger Wikipedia community. Requests for comment are one way of doing that, but there are others. The Neutral point of view noticeboard would be one place of raising the issue, if you think that Alamancer's edits are not in accord with WP:NPOV. These procedures can be trying and frustrating at times, and don't offer any guarantee of satisfaction, but they are the accepted ways of handling disputes. You could also try asking SlimVirgin for her advice, as she has taken an interest in the article in the recent past. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 19:54, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll await Almanacer's response to the latest round of activity and then consider where to go next. Esterson (talk) 19:58, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Impasse on Freud Science page

PoC: In view of the impasse, I have put in a request for dispute resolution. [1]

I have left a message on SlimVirgin's Talk Page asking if she could check out the dispute.Esterson (talk) 22:16, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

SlimVirgin has been busy editing the Wilhelm Reich page, which doubtless is quite a complicated task. I wouldn't necessarily expect her to reply immediately, under the circumstances, but you should get a response from her within a few days, at most. I'll add a polite reminder if she doesn't respond within that space of time. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 22:21, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

PoC: Thanks for removing "in 1986" from my recent Eysenck amendment to the Freud Science section. It was a (minor) aberration on my part. I had in my mind that since he wrote "fifty years or more" some 25 years ago the date should be given, but I wasn't thinking straight at the time! Esterson (talk) 07:19, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome. By the way, I would be grateful if you could comment on my proposals on the talk page of the Adolf Grünbaum article. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 21:32, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Original Research on Marcuse

Recently, you reverted a change I made to Marcuse's article on The New Left. Although you are right, what I added was original research, the previous version was also original research, and very ambiguous research at that. Here is the section as it stands:

"He characterizes tolerance of repressive speech as 'inauthentic.' Instead, he advocates a form of tolerance that is intolerant of right wing political movements:

'Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left.'"

The preceding section of the paragraph does seem to be based on secondary research, however, the final section and the quotations which follow (and which I quote above) are not referenced to any secondary sources. As the above research stands, it implies his concept of the political right is in the general sense like we might talk about in current politics. But in fact if we look at Marcuse's own writing it is clear from the end of the paragraph that he has particular idea of right wing in mind, that of Fascism and Nazism.

In short, if we hold to the secondary research rule, we would have to omit both quotations from this section of the article, as well as the final sentence of the first paragraph which appears un-referenced. That seems a bit harsh at this point in the article's development, but at the same time if we leave it as is, there is the ambiguity between the general sense of right wing and the particular sense Marcuse has in mind. What do you think? Baumgaertner (talk) 05:24, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

I think that anything that constitutes original research should be removed from the article, whether it seems "harsh" or not. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 21:32, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Your influential books

Please provide a valid source to back your claims that the books are influential, and that they rate a standalone article. Otherwise I'll make them into a redirect to the author's page. Thanks. §FreeRangeFrog 02:03, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

I did provide a valid source. The claim that they are influential is the source's claim, not mine. If you turn the articles into redirects without consensus, I'll revert you. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:08, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
The book is highly cited according to Google Scholar. What's the problem with correctly documenting the articles you create, or at least with not relying and repeating a single solitary source? With your number of edits I'm surprised you feel so wronged when someone slaps a notability tag on something that is non-notable at first glance. Just because you're an expert on something doesn't mean everyone else is. §FreeRangeFrog 02:15, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Were you under the impression that articles get turned into redirects simply because they are poor articles? What's your problem with the idea that having a low quality article is OK so long as it's about an obviously notable subject, and sources exist that could be used to improve it? Why this harassing nonsense? Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:17, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I am under the impression that new pages that make seemingly unsupported claims about books should be tagged with the corresponding tag. Books do not necessarily inherit the author's notability, unless I missed something and they completely changed the guidelines. And since I never did anything beyond placing a tag, your response seems more emotional and WP:OWNish than anything else. There is nothing "obvious" about anything in here, everything has to be sourced and referenced. And as a veteran editor, you have no more rights to implied good intentions or subject notability than the guy who just created an account. Next time, when you revert a tag, please consider not making aggressive comments about how you totally know that the person who placed the tag is wrong and you're absolutely right. Cheers §FreeRangeFrog 02:25, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I provided a source, so why would you claim that the article's contents, including the "highly influential" part, were unsupported? Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:27, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Seriously? Because I checked your reference's ISBN in Google Books and the The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy is not searchable, which means I can't immediately verify your claims of notability or influence. The History of Western Philosophy is, though, for example, so if you had used a reference like that one, I would have been able to check your article's claims in about 15 seconds. You feel I'm harassing you? Sorry, I'm just trying to help make a better encyclopedia. That's all. §FreeRangeFrog 02:38, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
So because you can't immediately verify the source yourself, you're assuming that I'm making it up, perhaps out of some desire to pretend that Dummett is the world's leading Frege scholar and his books are the most influential contributions on the topic? Why, pray, do you think I would do such a thing? Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 02:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

As you have failed to provide me with the slightest idea of what you think a "better" wording might be, I will leave it up to you to adjust the article wording to meet your own requirements. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:36, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

If you wish to discuss this article, please do so on the appropriate talk page, not here. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 20:39, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
I am trying to understand why you think there is a problem with the link. I am not particularly interested in the article itself, rather on your thought processes. That's why I'm here, not there. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:44, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
You should have taken this to the article's talk page immediately after the first revert. As for the problem with the link, would you please read WP:EGG? Can't you follow a link? Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 20:46, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
No, you should have tried to explain yourself better. The link says: "Keep piped links as intuitive as possible. Per the Wikipedia:Principle of least astonishment, make sure that the reader knows what to expect when clicking on a link." So why should "press revelations and a police investigation" not redirect to the article about the press revelations and the police (and indeed other) investigations - which is Wales child abuse scandal? I find it odd that you have patently failed to give any rational explanation of why you have a problem with the link I provided. Is it that you think the link should be in the introduction rather than in the text? Is it because you think the article does not cover the press coverage and police investigations? Of course it does. (It covers a lot more besides, of course - as does the Webster book by all accounts, though I won't take you to task over that.) You seem to have some difficulty in explaining why you think the link should not be reinstated - so, I'm happy to leave the wording of the article up to you. If you want to have an article without a useful and directly relevant link, so be it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:54, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
My failing to explain myself in a way that you can understand (which could be your fault as much as mine) is not an excuse for you starting an edit war. That's very stupid behavior on your part. As far as I'm concerned, the link is not intuitive. Most readers simply could not be expected to understand that clicking on that link would take them to "Wales child abuse scandal." Clearly, you simply don't understand the guideline. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 21:04, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Well, it seems pretty obvious to me. But it's clearly your article, so do what you like with it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:34, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
PS: Easy, wasn't it? Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:36, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Personal attacks

I found myself on Almanacer's talk page (I thought I was on yours, so I must have clicked the wrong link) and read your warning about personal attacks. If the issue comes up again, I would like to draw attention to Almanacer's accusing me of a "deliberate" misrepresentation: "he is now deliberately misrepresenting Levy’s text".[2]

Far from this being the case, Almanacer's allegation was supported by his putting together two snippets of quotations as if they were directely associated when in fact they were five pages apart in different contexts. As I wrote in response: "I note that your citing the second quote as if it immediately followed the first one misleadingly gives the impression that the second one is directly related to 'Cioffi attacks...', i.e., erroneously associates the 'testable' phrase with Cioffi." Esterson (talk) 10:08, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Almanacer's behavior toward me has been persistently rude, aggressive, and uncivil. I am not very surprised to find that he has directed the same kind of behavior toward you as well. Personally, it's usually my policy to simply ignore this kind of stuff (I like to think I have a fairly thick skin) but it does tend to become an irritating distraction from the issues at hand. If Almanacer's behavior were even slightly worse than it was, he would probably find himself in trouble, and other editors would start warning him. There are bureaucratic procedures like requests for user comment that can be employed in such situations, but I prefer to avoid them unless there is no alternative. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 23:15, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Great Username

Hah! It seems some edits I make are just that... hit a random link and pop up articles about an athlete in the late 1800s, clean a bit. Voila... polishing cobwebs. (Yes, I know WP is not a chat board... but it is a great name.)

I am sure you don't edit for the thanks of some random grumpy editor... but thank you anyway.

No need to reply. Happy editing. It is worth it... even the parts that are just polishing cobwebs.User talk:Unfriend12 02:55, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

No, there's no need for me to reply, but I'll reply anyway. My username wasn't chosen at random. I knew what kind of edits I wanted to make when I started my account, and chose the name accordingly. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:05, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Message to Polisher of Cobwebs re Richard Webster article and your deletion of my edit which added his wife's name Bod Longhurst. You are right that the reference, an obituary, gave only the first name of Webster's wife, Bod. I simply included her surname before marriage, Longhurst, for users' information (she being my sister-in-law) but I do agree that Wikipedia cannot recognise the authenticity of this without a written source. Perhaps it's easiest to include just her first name. I will edit the page again to that effect. Trust that's OK. Unnecessary huh?

I just came across the edits you made a while ago to an article (I won't name it cos I am not that pithy) that I put a lot of time and effort into. I just want you to know I think you are dick who is only on here because of patently obvious IRL inadequacy issues. Look sunshine if you cared you would making a positive contribution on here not removing stuff because you just don't like it. I didn't have any agenda when I edited the page because I liked the subject and wanted to include all available info. But you just chop it all back like you have something to prove.

So hey, next time when you're protecting your precious little corner (or vision) of the universe just remember it's people like you who have helped Jimbo get his $25m!

Still to me you're just another wannabe scholar; a fucking tool, with a dumb ass name, who is more a polisher of bell ends than a scion to free knowledge!

Fortunately for me, I haven't the least interest in being a scholar. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 00:43, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Your 3O request

Hey, Polisher of Cobwebs! I just wanted to let you know that I've declined your request for a 3O, because it doesn't look like things have been discussed on the talk page yet. The thing is that 3O doesn't actually have any "authority" to rule on content disputes; it's more designed to get things moving again in a discussion that has reached a standstill. If people aren't discussing things on the talk page, then 3O isn't really going to do any good. If the other editor does come to the talk page, and your discussions there get bogged down, feel free to re-post a request! In the meantime, if the edit war keeps going, it might be better to post a report to a place like WP:ANEW, to try to break the edit war. Thanks! Writ Keeper 16:43, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

If Almanacer refuses to discuss anything on the talk page, I can't do anything about that. I'm also well aware that 3O has no special authority to rule on disputes, BTW. You can refuse to comment if you like, of course, but I would nevertheless ask that you do so. Though there is no recent discussion on the talk page, there has been extensive discussion in the past, and it has got nowhere. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 20:16, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Freud Science section dispute

PoC: I'm concerned that the Freud page has now been protected by Diannaa in its current form, which includes Almanacer's recent additions to which we are both opposed. As far as I can make out, this means it is fully protected and can only be changed by an administrator. In other words it is frozen with Almanacer's recent additions intact. I'm not sure how we can go beyond this point.

With regard to the "Levy sentences", the current impasse has led me to re-examine Levy's book on its own terms, rather than the terms set by Almanacer to which I had been previously responding. I now see that Levy's book is not about the scientific credentials of Freud's theories at all. None of the philosophers whose writings Levy discusses argues that Freud's theories are unscientific, their criticisms are on other grounds. So Almanacer's citing of Levy's book in the Science section (and more specifically, his stating that Levy is responding "to critics of Freud’s scientific credibility" as the current Freud page has it), is entirely misconceived. But it is evident that Almanacer is impervious to such arguments, and simply evades them. My first appeal to RfC succeeded because Almanacer did not get the support of a single editor, and he eventually gave way. My second appeal to RfC was unsuccessful because he refused to participate. I'm sure you are more experienced in the ways of Wikipedia. Can you suggest how we can proceed from here. Esterson (talk) 01:26, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

The protection is a temporary measure that will expire after three days. Hopefully, it will allow discussion to proceed without the distraction of an ongoing edit war at the article itself. I agree that the Levy material should be removed, but it's of little importance in the larger scheme of things that it is likely to remain there for a few days more at least. Unless Almanacer can create consensus to keep the Levy material, which I doubt, it really ought to be just removed when protection expires. It's not proper of him at all to keep restoring it regardless of other editors' views, and he has some explaining to do there. It might help to place a request for comment on the article talk page; this is one common way disputes like this are approached. A request for user comment on Almanacer himself would be a further option, but I'm reluctant to go that route. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:08, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
As an afterthought, if Almanacer does continue edit warring after the article protection expires, it would be perfectly appropriate to report him for that. The place for that is WP:ANEW. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 04:15, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the responses. I should say that this morning I have started looking more closely at all the works cited by Levy and what I wrote above is too generalised across all the authors. I'll clarify this when I've sorted this out. It also means I shall have to amend my last comment on the Freud talk page addressed to Almanacer. I shall revert most of that comment while I prepare an amended version. The paragraph alluding to what you wrote remains, so your outdented response is still appropriate. Esterson (talk) 08:44, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
Postscript: Apart from the fact that checking out the relevant passages in Levy and consulting the books he cites will be time-consuming, as a matter of policy I shall not be adding an amended version of the paragraphs I deleted from the Freud talk page for the moment, because I want Almanacer to address my point that Levy's chapter on Grunbaum is not a rebuttal of claims that Freud's theories are unscientific (that is not Grunbaum's position), but a challenge to Grunbaum's understanding of Freud. This gives even greater force to the reason you gave for omitting that sentence from the Freud Science section. Esterson (talk) 09:15, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Some comments in relation to the current situation on the Freud page (28 November): I have been waiting for Almanacer to respond to my critical comments on 25 November before deciding on a future course of action. As you know, to end the endless exchanges I wrote that I was prepared to accept Almanacer's current sentences on Levy (though this would be subject to your response to this suggestion). However, (i) Almanacer's posting of an amended second sentence showed he is continuing to ignore our repeated urgings that he consults the Talk page on a disputed topic before he posts, and (ii) the content of the amended second sentence, while superficially it may seem to take into account my earlier suggestion, does not in fact do so and would have led to another endless series of exchanges had I not reverted it.

I suspect that Almanacer has not responded to my critical comments because as it stands the two Levy sentences remain in place. However, I wrote that I was prepared to accept his two sentences before his posting alluded to above showed he has no intention of changing his behaviour, both in relation to failing to consult the Talk page and the nature of his postings. (In regard to the latter, there is also his stating he intends to reinstate the Stafford-Clark quotation while failing to address my reason why it is not appropriate. Though I did say that his credentials did not preclude him being cited, Stafford-Clark is a very minor player, and his book is nothing more than a faithful, totally uncritical, summary of Freud's theories and practice without any discussion of their scientific credentials.)

Leaving aside your view of my proposed concession, I regard the latter as null and void in the light of Almanacer's subsequent behaviour, and his failure to respond to my latest comments on this. My inclination is now to refer the issue to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents [3] on the grounds of his repeated postings without consultation on the Talk page in spite of our urgings, and his Bad Faith allegations against both of us. The alternative is to let matters stand, with Almanacer's two Levy sentences in place. But his behaviour I cited above suggests that this would only be putting the problem off temporarily, and that his attitude (e.g., his statement about reinstating Stafford-Clark) indicates that it will re-occur in the future.

I'd very much like to hear your view on the current situation before taking further action. Esterson (talk) 10:34, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

I would simply encourage you to go ahead and make your proposed changes. I would be happy to support them, and Almanacer is not in a position to single-handedly prevent them from being made. It would be best, however, to stay away from ANI unless it is absolutely necessary, since the page is only for situations that demand the intervention of administrators, and I'm not convinced that things have reached that stage yet. As the page says, it's not really for resolving content disputes. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 21:10, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
I'll propose the following replacement for Almanacer's second sentence, which, unlike his, is an accurate reflection of what Levy himself claimed to have done in relation to the scientific credentials of psychoanalysis:
More generally, Levy, while acknowledging he had not proved "that psychoanalysis is a science… or even a scientific discipline", writes that he had at most demolished "certain objections to the possibility of psychoanalysis having scientific status" as argued by some noted philosophers.[1]
But we can be pretty sure what will happen. Almanacer will refuse to accept it, and if I post it on the Freud page he will revert it. Where will we go from there? Esterson (talk) 08:56, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Labelling someone as suffering from a disfiguring medical condition without a source is a very clear BLP violation. Don't restore it without a source. You will likely be blocked if you persist in this. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 23:23, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

A source? if you would have looked at the talk page of this article or ANY BIOGRAPHY or even(!) youtube-clip of him talking I could take this/you more seriously...but apparently you like wasting not only your, but also other people's time. Paranoid Android1208 (talk) 23:29, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

btw: it is also a wiki-rule that you don't suppose bad intentions of an editor as the first thing. FYI: disabilities are nothing "bad" and: I have referenced the source from the habermas talk-page at the kyoto-place, so i consider this done Paranoid Android1208 (talk) 23:41, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

You do not get to label someone as suffering from a disfiguring medical condition without a source. No excuses. The source has to be in the article, and it does not matter what is on the talk page. Also, please note that I didn't accuse you of "bad intentions." I don't in fact have the slightest interest in what your intentions might be; it's your behavior that is the problem. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 23:55, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Ayn Rand. Using double standards for quotes in 'academic reaction' section. If you have an issue with the quote posted, then most of the entire section should be scrapped by that standard.

Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.137.88.38 (talk) 01:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Placing nonsensical 'warnings' on my talk page won't help you one bit in a content dispute. Get consensus on the article's talk page, if you want to make the change I reverted. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:18, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Warnings are standard practice. I'm trying to be fair. I'm willing to compromise when other editors have a point, but please make your case. You admitted yourself on talk page that Rand respected Von Mises, a philosopher, yet you revert a sentence I deleted that said she was critical of all philosophers except Aristotle. She also had unqualified praise for Aquinas and Montessori, among others. Please see talk page under 'shameful randians'

Warning someone for doing XYZ when you are doing XYZ is not fair. It is hypocritical. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 07:43, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Who Is Ayn Rand

Copying content verbatim from my draft article is something that requires attribution. And considering that I am an active editor, it is a bit rude to do it without even telling me. --RL0919 (talk) 03:35, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

I honestly can't understand why you would care about this. Presumably, what matters is that articles get started, not who starts them. Regarding attribution: what, specifically, is it that you are asking me to do? I did look at the Text of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, but I'm afraid that I can't make head or tails of it. Understanding the fine points of copyright has never really been one of my strengths - which is one reason why I would never try to become an administrator. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 07:39, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I care for the same reason that often motivates editors make lists of articles they have created: if you are going to contribute work for free, it is nice to at least have it acknowledged that you contributed. Anyhow, the license requires that attribution be provided (Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia may be easier to follow than the license itself). In the circumstances I think a history merge would be the best solution, which I can do myself if you don't object. --RL0919 (talk) 16:31, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Editors often list articles they have started on their user pages. It is not for me to say why anyone else does this, but in my case, I've done it only because it might possibly be helpful to other users to know that I started those pages. It is not my way of saying, "Oooh, look at me, I'm a good editor - I started all those articles!" (An attitude for which I would personally have utter contempt). You can solve this one however you like (but oh, please don't use the tools on me). Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 20:09, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Histories of the two pages have been merged. --RL0919 (talk) 19:31, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of The Formation of Marx's Economic Thought

Hello, Polisher of Cobwebs. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, The Formation of Marx's Economic Thought, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:57, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps you would like to explain why you think a book described by a leading scholar as an excellent discussion of Marx should be deleted? Did you in fact bother to do any kind of work to determine whether it meets any of the criteria of notability? Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 18:47, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Marx as an Economist

Hello Polisher of Cobwebs,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Marx as an Economist for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, Sue Rangell 06:07, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

I'll reply here. Why are you ignorantly and destructively nominating for deletion an article about a book by a famous writer and economist? Do you or do you not realize that it is very likely to have received enough comment in reliable sources to be considered notable, and have you looked at the note on my user page about the articles I start? However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:13, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Alien & Terminator

I notice that you have reverted my recent edits on the pages Alien (franchise) and Terminator (franchise) with the summary "get consensus first". In my edit summary I indicated that these edits were based on the Film MOS (specifically the section MOS:FILM#Reception). If you check that section of the MOS you will see that my edits were in line with it. The MOS was recently changed as a result of discussions that took place over several weeks (which you can read here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Archive 45 and Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Film). As you will see, there is a consensus that has been established for a policy for all film articles. So I would appreciate it if you would reinstate my edits by reverting your own. Thanks. 99.192.75.99 (talk) 00:30, 26 January 2013 (UTC) (=99.192.92.87)

I see you have been online a couple of times making more edits to various pages, but have chosen not to respond to my post here. I also see you have announced that you are taking a break. So I am going to post a slightly modified version of my above comment on both Talk:Alien (franchise) and Talk:Terminator (franchise) and will revert your edit myself, as it is fully supported by the MOS. 99.192.76.230 (talk) 11:56, 26 January 2013 (UTC) (= 99.192.75.99)

Hi, Polisher!

Would you care to help me out with something? If you're not sure what I mean, take a look at the ant lion entry just a bit further down on the list page, and see how it has an imbedded image there? BOZ (talk) 05:10, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Your removal of spaces in headlines

Hello! I just wanted to point out that your removal of spaces in headlines is not supported by WP:MOSHEAD which you refer to. The guideline says "Spaces between the equal signs and the heading text are optional". Once the community decides which is best, unity will be achieved by bot edits. I'm sure your skills are better used on something more important than those spaces. Just a thought. :-) --Bensin (talk) 19:57, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Notice of Dispute resolution discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute in which you may have been involved. Content disputes can hold up article development, therefore we are requesting your participation to help find a resolution. The thread is "Karl Marx".

Guide for participants

If you wish to open a DR/N filing, click the "Request dispute resolution" button below this guide or go to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/request for an easy to follow, step by step request form.

What this noticeboard is:
  • It is an early step to resolve content disputes after talk page discussions have stalled. If it's something we can't help you with, or is too complex to resolve here, our volunteers will point you in the right direction.
What this noticeboard is not:
  • It is not a place to deal with the behavior of other editors. We deal with disputes about article content, not disputes about user conduct.
  • It is not a place to discuss disputes that are already under discussion at other dispute resolution forums.
  • It is not a substitute for the talk pages: the dispute must have been discussed extensively on a talk page (not just through edit summaries) before resorting to DRN.
  • It is not a court with judges or arbitrators that issue binding decisions: we focus on resolving disputes through consensus, compromise, and explanation of policy.
Things to remember:
  • Discussions should be civil, calm, concise, neutral, and objective. Comment only about the article's content, not the other editors. Participants who go off-topic or become uncivil may be asked to leave the discussion.
  • Let the other editors know about the discussion by posting {{subst:drn-notice}} on their user talk page.
  • Sign and date your posts with four tildes "~~~~".
  • If you ever need any help, ask one of our volunteers, who will help you as best as they can. You may also wish to read through the FAQ page located here and on the DR/N talkpage.

Please take a moment to review the simple guide and join the discussion. Thank you! --Guy Macon (talk) 21:33, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Basilisk.JPG

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on File:Basilisk.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from URL. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 22:15, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.

Thank you. Werieth (talk) 15:48, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
