References edit

Medical articles on Wikipedia must be cited by the best available evidence and written in a consistent format. We typically use review articles. A list of resources to help edit such articles can be found here. The edit box has a build in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN, additionally, the Citation Template Generator will aid in the formatting of references; all one needs to do is cut and paste the results. The welcome page is another good place to learn about editing the encyclopedia. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a note. Please use secondary sources edit

Not primary sources. This is a primary source [1]

Also please summarize in your own words rather than quote. Best Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:03, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I thought it was O.K. anyway, in this case, though, since it was a journal article, and all medical source citations must usually come only from medical journals, who are considered the most authoritative sources of medical information. I do agree that I must learn to summarize, or at least quote shorter (although for someone who is not a medical professional or paraprofessional, summarizing medical journal information is not going to be easy at all, however, I might add, to be fair).
If you look at pubmed. On the left hand side there is the ability to restrict your searches to review articles from the last 5 years. Best Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 05:56, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Doc. I'll do that. I appreciate your help and your work for Wikipedia. Have a good day.

Differential diagnosis edit

Epilepsy edit

Please do not make further edits to epilepsy, particularly with regards to medical marihuana, before you have discussed the wording on the talk page (see Talk:Epilepsy). "Trials being underway" is not a reason to discuss the use of cannabis to the extent that you were attempting. Perhaps, before you post, have a good look at WP:MEDRS, which discusses the sourcing requirements. Yobol has asked in edit summaries that you do the same time. JFW | T@lk 21:37, 26 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes you appear to be edit warring on a number of pages. You will need to discuss. These are controversial issues. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:12, 26 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

The edit I made was taken from a medical journal article; they are supposed to be the most reliable source. But I will do as you requested until further consensus can be reached on the page, and even more evidence involving clinical trial results becomes fully available and can be verified by multiple sources. However, with that being said, most of the citations in those sections are from 2007-2013, not from this year or last, and new evidence which meets our criteria regarding these issues has, in all likelihood, been produced in that time period. Medical sources must be authoritative, but secondarily, they must also take care to incorporate the most recent changes, so that they stay current.

References edit

You continue to use very poor or no references. And some of the references you use do not pertain to the topic in question.

In this paper the ref does not deal with malnutrition but critical illness [2] Also you cannot copy and paste abstracts into Wikipedia.

- When the online medical journal articles give you access to articles and abstracts, they just list a series of numbers separated by semicolons or colons (X:XX:XXX). I cannot find a place on their websites- even when they show you how to cite their article in various formats- where they clearly tell you this is the volume number, these are the pages, this is the chapter, etc., which makes it very hard for me to include that ideal amount of information in my citation. I'm not improperly citing for the pleasure of it or to aggravate Wikipedia. The only thing they clearly indicate are the authors, and the DOI number.

- Admittedly, it is quite an exaggeration and probably was misplaced, but I thought, in good faith, that any type of real or suggested therapy that involves restricting someone, whether it be a healthy patient- or even a critically ill patient- from a vital type of nutrient or source of calories- namely, protein(s), which are important for the body's metabolism, in the case of 'underfeeding'- is still a type of temporary under-nutrition, whether it is for medical reasons or natural ones. Perhaps it should be transferred to an article on protein deprivation, a section on dietary care of the critically ill, or therapeutic under-nutrition.

In this edit you provided no reference [3]

- That information was on a very widely-recognized disorder, epilepsy and seizures, where the symptoms and treatments either are, or, at any rate, should be, very well-known, at least in developed and/or Western countries, even by most of those in the lay public that are outside medicine or health care, provided they are literate and modestly educated. That information is also widely known by now to be true and is not subject much to further dispute, and was not about a breaking news event or a study or a new discovery. For that reason, I assumed it was an exception to the general rule and did not need any citation.

In this edit you added content before the ref that supported the previous content [4]

Sure what I typically do is take the title and put it into pubmed to find the PMID. I then use the autofill feature as explained here WP:MEDHOW. It makes adding well formatted references super easy. The other benefit of pubmed is it allows you to limit searches to just review articles. If a source is not pubmed indexed it may not be appropriate even if a review. Hope that helps Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 07:03, 21 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, Doc, that does help; thank you for your time. From now on, you have my word that I will not post medical edits until and unless they can be cited appropriately. Thank you for your services to Wikipedia, and have a good week.

This content "Although there are some common triggers for seizures, such as lack of sleep, stress and alcohol, everyone’s epilepsy is different. Some people feel that some colorings and preservatives, monosodium glutamate (MSG) or artificial sweeteners can trigger their seizures. Many foods labeled ‘low-fat’ contain these artificial ingredients. Some people with epilepsy avoid certain foods if they seem to trigger seizures. Grapefruit juice and pomegranate juice do not trigger seizures, but they can make the side effects of some epilepsy medications more likely, including carbamazepine, diazepam and midazolam." is from [5] which you added here [6]

Current Events Additions edit

Hello Poiuytrewqvtaatv123321!

Thanks for your recent edits to Wikipedia's current events portal! It seems that some items you have added to the section for July 3, 2015 are rather long, such as a U.S. Air Force hypersonic flying weapon item and an item regarding the development of a bedside Ebola test. Furthermore, references cited for both items were published significantly earlier than July 3, reducing relevance for readers and potentially introducing bias. For example, the Harvard gazette reference for the item outlining the Ebola test was published on the 25th of June. This introduces bias, as no clear link can be seen between the mentioning of development by the company named Corgenix, and the date on which it was mentioned.

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at WP:MCQ, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button (  or  ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.
