Send a message to Mathworld and they will agree that the $790,000 NSF grant was cancelled some time ago. See Award Number 0226327. See www.nsf.gov It seems to have expired on about 31/8/2005.

Regarding your message: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:129.177.44.170&redirect=no

You are probably mistaken. These IPs are shared by more than a 1000 people who access the internet through the University of Bergen's network. (We get new IPs every time we reconnect to the network.) I simply made a correction to Sumatra PDF, and I usually do not edit Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.177.44.170 (talk) 22:27, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Oops ... It seems that that message is nearly a year old (from 2007-10-02). I do not know why I got a "new message" alert today, when I accidentally got assigned this IP. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.177.44.170 (talk) 22:33, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Sarah Jessica Parker: You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. -MBK004 20:22, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Wolfram demo project thing

Ah I see. Sorry about that, the way the bot inserted the ref it looked like some kind of irrelevant link or spam.radek (talk) 20:51, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Amy Sterling Casil has been reverted.

Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove unwanted links and spam from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. The external links I reverted were matching the following regex rule(s): \btypepad\.com\b (links: http://www.asterling.typepad.com/).

If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 21:45, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Reverted to my version, since it is the website of the subject of the Wikipedia entry. --Pleasantville (talk) 21:48, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Janitorial assistance

The symbol of the admin is the mop and bucket. Cleaning up material like that, from whatever source, is part of the maintenance routine around here and no thanks are expected. Even so, it was kind of you to leave that note.   Will Beback  talk  12:35, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I also notified others by email of your gracious gesture. Again, thanks. --Pleasantville (talk) 15:22, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

DKM

Thanks for the fix of my error on the DKM page. Do you know of any good way to incorporate that information safely? The problem is that the current detail re: living situation is simply inaccurate, which bugs me a bit. Thanlis (talk) 15:35, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Does he maybe mention it on his blog or something? --Pleasantville (talk) 18:47, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Not yet. Possibly wise just to remove the living details -- it's not entirely relevant to his work, anyhow, other than that LA's the setting of the unpublished James Camber books. Thanlis (talk) 21:42, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable. --Pleasantville (talk) 12:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you kindly

I keep hoping every May that we'll see you both at WisCon.... --Orange Mike | Talk 20:49, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

File:WesportNYtarinstation.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:WesportNYtarinstation.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:WesportNYtarinstation.jpg]]. October 2009

Your message: Please do not place fake URLs in Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. --Pleasantville (talk) 12:21, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

My response: I did not place a fake anything. The "URL" as you call it is referenced all over and it is very relevant to Mathematica because "the same code was taken from Mathematica to create Wolfa" or so I read on wolfram.com blogs and advertisements ref. Wolfram Alpha. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.205.101.174 (talk) 22:51, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

wolfa.com is not the Wolfram Alpha URL. --Pleasantville (talk) 23:46, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

My mistake. I added it back with the humongously long URL as per your request. I have no idea why that mattered to you or warranted such a message from YOU, but if you are happy then I am happy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.205.101.174 (talk) 06:11, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello again,

I have been doing research on Wolfram Alpha, because it is a very intriguing service to me since I love math, science, and all things alike. I was looking through the history of the "Wolfram Alpha" article and noticed that you removed this from the article today as well: " Wolfa.com, shorter Web address provided as a courtesy by Wolfram employee." I understood perhaps why you wanted to remove it from Mathematica, but the link in question seems to explain this "URL" is simply a direct mirror site. This piqued my interest so I did further research to learn that sites which display advertisements or embed malware are not to be linked to on Wiki (Duhh), but this site is a direct mirror (from my understanding, it cannot even add a frame or ads in this "state"). Further research reveals everyone is interested in a "lesser long URL" (quote from a blog), so if an employe at Wolfram decided to provide one for convenience, why would you not include that in a Wiki page? I can't make sense of it.

The domain name is not registered to Wolfram Research --Pleasantville (talk)

May I ask why that is relevant? External links are almost never associated to the company of the Wiki page. Mashable.com and Justin.tv are not registered to Wolfram Research... so your logic escapes me. I am new to contributing to the Wiki community, but I fail to see why your opinion is more important than mine. You are NOT a moderator to my knowledge. So I expect you to either have a discussion with me about this or put the external link back since it is worthy of mentioning. Thank you! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.205.101.174 (talk) 19:13, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for replying. I have looked into this and spoken with a lawyer friend of mine prior to responding. In the discussion you are referencing, it is clear that the party was hosting an illegal mirror since they were posting ads using frames to profit from WolframAlpha without their consent. In the case of wolfa.com, it is being provided in "good faith" by someone who works for Wolfram without any ads or intent to profit from the mirror. Additionally, I looked further into the redirection and like I said before, wolfa.com is using a direct mirror (pointing directly to the IP address of WolframAlpha), in which case it is not possible for any content to be tampered with or ads to be added to this "URL." The lawyer has informed me this is "in no way illegal" since all it is doing is promoting the service and helping it with "good faith" efforts. Please confirm any of my statements you would like and reply with your thoughts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.205.101.174 (talk) 16:43, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

This was discussed on the talk page in May when a number of variant URLs were being posted to that page -- apparently illegal mirror sites like this one. See the Talk page. --Pleasantville (talk) 23:16, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Alex Smith (The Simplest Universal Computer Proof contest winner)

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Alex Smith (The Simplest Universal Computer Proof contest winner). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alex Smith (The Simplest Universal Computer Proof contest winner). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:08, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Space opera

If you could help improve that article, it would be great. There are few sci-fi experts as it is, and we desperately need help to improve content here (although I see you've already found the SCIFI WikiProject, so you are well aware of that :)). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:42, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Page protection

Hi there,

I declined your request to block that IP at the moment. I hadn't realised that they are IP hopping. If you like, I can protect this page for a short time? Let me know. GedUK  10:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Page protection would be nice. Thanks. This person seems to have an endless supply of iPhone IP#s starting with 166.137 . . .--Pleasantville (talk) 10:37, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
I've protected it for three days. Protecting talk pages is pretty unusual, but they seem quite determined. You should set up a separate subpage under this talk page that IPs can edit, so that IPs can still communicate with you, and put a notice at the top of your talk page. I'll see if I can find one. GedUK  12:21, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
I've protected it again, and created User talk:Pleasantville/IPSubpage for IPs to use if they need to talk to you. Banner is now at the top. GedUK  08:18, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks.--Pleasantville (talk) 23:34, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Wolfram Widgets

I was looking to see if any existing Wolfram tools were in active use on the math wikiproject, and see you helped review ways to use Wolfram Demonstration tools in WP. They recently released interactive widgets that can hook into a page and provide a dynamic in-page frame thanks to the magic of javascript. Have you seen these in use online? I hear they are developing a MediaWiki extension that would allow this to be used in any page, and hope to get a copy to test out.

Cheers, SJ+ 05:37, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I'm not sure how I missed this message. I haven't yet explored how Widgets can be used with math articles. I am currently exploring how Wolfram Alpha and its Widgets can be used with entries for placees within the Adirondack Park in the State of New York. --Pleasantville (talk) 15:01, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the update, that's an intersting idea! If you leave recommendations or suggestions for the extension authors I suspect they'll look into it; last I heard they were still actively trying to find ways to make widgets useful on WP. A little mountain-info and trail-info widget would be cool; I still have hopes of becoming a 4[6]er one day. SJ+ 17:11, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
A lot of the NY state place entries were generated by some automated means from US Census data. I was looking at some of these entries. It doesn't make much sense to refer to a town as "north of Albany" when it is more than a hundred miles away. There is almost certainly a better way to do what I've been doing today. --Pleasantville (talk) 17:17, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

2010 Census

I just wanted to suggest that you probably dont need to drop the census comment on all the state projects But California, Wisonsin, Texas, Virginia, DC and Maryland are all pretty active as is Hawaii. Also if you drop it on the pages for National Register of Historic Places and Us roads they are both very active and have several articles each were this data may apply. --Kumioko (talk) 21:04, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

That's very helpful. Thanks. --Pleasantville (talk) 21:06, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

I think you're including too much detail on his parents and grandparents. I'll write in more detail on Talk:Stephen Wolfram. --Macrakis (talk) 22:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

I agree, and am intending to prune it. Really, his mother ought to have her own entry, and some of what is there should move to Kate Friedlander's entry. His father should possibily have his own entry, but I don't have enough good sources for that yet.--Pleasantville (talk) 22:22, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm so sorry to hear about David, Kathryn. Condolences to you and the children. DS (talk) 14:20, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

What vile tidings! I can only offer my heartfelt condolences, and a promissory note good for any help I can offer here or elsewhere, at WisCon or Worldcon or in a too-mundane world lessened by David's departure. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:54, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
