Hi Phaedrial, I Midx1004 21:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC) award you with this star for the most outstanding userpage I've seen! I only wish mine will get as good in the future..

You're very welcome :) Many thanks for the offer of a page re-design, but I would like to try and get there myself (although I may come back to you later, if thats okay.) Believe it or not, I'm actually a half-decent web-designer in the real world, but the wiki code seems just 'wrong' enough somehow to annoy me, lol. xx --Midx1004 22:48, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks but.....

Thanks for your action on the Taj image - however, the fair use criteria seems to say "Where no free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information" well I'm actually working on a map of the Taj complex that will do this. So I think 1. we can't tag it as fair use. 2. Google's usage policy is quite explicit about asserting its copyright solely for individual use. 3. We're all scared witless at the prospect of getting sued - so if you're an admin, can we get it speedy deleted post-haste? Is there some official orum I can take these concerns? --Mcginnly | Natter 15:19, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Barnstar

  The Excellent Userpage Award
I award you this barnstar because your userpage is simply amazing, it seems you've put A LOT of work into it. It's easy on the eyes as well, well-written, and it even kept my attention. I read your entire userpage, and that's a big statement coming from me. BsroiaadnTalk 18:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

And also, to make up for the guy who basically told you "...to shove my attempt of cheering him up in a dark and moist place of my anatomy..."

I award you this barnstar for still cheering people up even after some people tried to put you down for it. BsroiaadnTalk 18:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

And I know it's probably not very common to award people two barnstars at once, but I think you deserve them...even if you already have them both. Haha. BsroiaadnTalk 18:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you so much for your kind words, Sharon. I really apprecaite it. I am glad that there is someone there to support me while many others are putting me down. I found it espiecally frustrating for some of the trivial oppose reasons, like how I refered to the admin tools as "pwoers". I mean, come on, even Jimbo Wales refers to them in that term! Oh wel, I didn't place a huge value on that RfA, and I knew that my chances of passing were the same as Kevin Federline winning a grammy. :P But thank you so much for giving your support. I think that all I need is to let more time pass. I used to be pretty hot headed, it was only recently that I toned down my act... Karrmann 00:03, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Request

Hi, I just wanted to request for you to revamp my userpage (in your spare time of course). I'm in no hurry, and for the most part I like how the structure looks; but my header with links to talk, notes etc. only really is aligned correctly in Firefox, I don't like having a white background and my format for userboxen needs major work to satisfy my visual anal retentiveness :) I also wanted to construct a banner (with cool photos hopefully) that I can place a revolving weekly quotation from the amazing graffiti and detournement created during May 1968 movement. If you're to busy right now, just let me know. Love, VanTucky (talk) 03:12, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

As to color, I'd just say that I'd like to avoid major red/green themes to be accommodating to individuals with colorblindness. I'm very partial to blue, and I really like your format for Ryan Postlewaithe's userpage. VanTucky (talk) 03:33, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Sharon, got your email from a couple of days ago...glad things are getting back to normal a bit...hope work is going well. Thanks for the other info, I actually do have some familiarity with the condition, will email you this weekend with more details. My daughter indeed flew home to us, and boy were we glad to see her! It was a bit unnerving, as she came home the same day as the Glaskow airport bombing, so security was nuts and the media was everywhere at LAX... Anyway, just a quick note hoping you're okay. Language Movement

Hi Sharon, as you are interested in History and Language, I think you'll also be interested in combination of both. We are working on Language Movement for about a year to upgrade it into featured status. At the moment it's in FAC and despite a lot of problems (like retirement of one major contributor and the other being extremly busy) came through major concerns. But a lot of of work is still remains to be done on copyediting. Problems like having long sentences, awkward choice of words, difficult flow of prose, repeatation of same words needs to be sorted out. Your friend Kyoko has done some good work. We (Dwaipayan, Aditya and me) are trying as much as we can. But more help is needed and can provide us with those. So please join us and give us your helping hand. By the way, here's a word for your interest in learning all the languages. The word is Tarif. It is a noun and it means admiration. The word can be found in Bengali, Hindi and probably a few other indian language. Root of the word is probably in Persian or Arabic language :) Regards --Tarif from Bangladesh 21:52, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

DEAR Sharon! Thanks for your GREAT reply! I am really happy to know that you want to help. One more thing before I go, as you can learn from here, I basically contribute from mobile phone. So when I wrote that BIG message to you, it took me about half an hour. And believe it or not after I pressed the save button, the next thing I knew was my message can not be saved for an edit conflict. As a result, I had to write all over again. Anyway, that's not an agony anymore after receiving yours and knowing that you really want to contribute. Thanks again and you too have a great weekend my friend! --Tarif from Bangladesh 06:17, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

List of songs with personal names

Hi - I'm disappointed in your decision to close this with a delete, as there are some very important issues involved, including the rapidity which the deletion renom was made after a "no consensus" closure just 2 months ago. The direction these deletions are taking the encyclopedia is unfortunate - and none of the arguments were answered adequately, just a lot of policy acronyms thrown about, some of it incorrectly. This is a loss to scholars, writers, and others who use these lists in their research, and a victory for the forces here who can't see what makes wikipedia unique. I have no reason to think you are one of the latter, based on what I've seen of your work here, so I really regret that you went this way. Also, I'm quite sure there were other supporters of this list who were unaware that it was again up for deletion, so soon after the last round, who would have weighed in had they known. I am concerned about this process. Tvoz |talk 09:01, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Apologies for my tone above, Phaedriel - I didn't mean to imply that you had acted outside of policy. I was and am frustrated at what I see as the damaging of the encyclopedia by the persistent removal of valuable material, spurred on by what I think is a mistaken desire to slim down the project for reasons that remain obscure to me. Samuel Wantman made a good point about this here - I think this is a serious problem, and this particular set of lists was just one example. Years of work by dozens, even hundreds, of editors went into it, and it just seems to me that deleting because 10 or 15 people thought it should be deleted is just wrong. Deletion should be the rarer action - what harm is done by continuing the lists? No one answered that. There also was a request that this be tabled so that a community discussion might take place on the larger issues, but that seems to be outside of the norm too. I am hopeful that this can happen (and I do note your comment about setting up a Category), but every time these kinds of things are removed, I think we lose some of our history and uniqueness. And no one has yet explained why that is a good thing or why it is necessary. But I did not mean to attack you - I believed then and still do that you were being neutral and fair. It was not a matter of that - it was distress that yet another piece has been removed. We're not paper. That opens up all kinds of doors, or it should. Thanks for listening Tvoz |talk 00:40, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to join in this discussion. I agree with Tvoz on this, and I'm very concerned about this closing. I don't see a clear consensus in the discussion about these pages. Certainly, you can count numbers and say it was overwhelmingly for deletion, but that does not mean there is consensus. In formal consensus decision making traditions there is the notion that a single person can block consensus. Here at wikipedia, we often let a quantitative assessment of a discussion prevail. This is what I think happened here, and it concerns me.

Everyone involved in the debate about the songs pages seemed to be discussing the topic in good faith, and by the end of the discussion it was clear that there were some fundamental disagreements about what should and should not be in a list. The answer to the questions raised are a matter of interpretation. They are not clearly dealt with by our policy and guidelines. To say that the consensus is clearly "delete" says that the opinions expressed by Tvoz, myself, and others is without any merit and not worthy of discussion by the larger community. As a result, more and more pages are getting deleted that have had broad community support for several years. I recently was on a panel at a conference dealing with Web 2.0, and I talked about how Wikipedia works behind the scenes. Everyone there was on the cutting edge of what is happening on the web, and everyone was very familiar with Wikipedia. But very few people had any idea what goes on behind the mainspace. What I came to realize from the talk is that of the millions of people who visit Wikipedia, a small percentage edit the pages in the mainspace. Of those a small percentage engage in discussion on talk and user pages, and of those a small percentage engage in discussions on Wikipedia pages. Of those, the people who find a good deal of content objectionable spend time at xFD discussions. This stacks the deck against content. The result is a finality about deletions that is near impossible to overcome. Once an article or category gets deleted it will be quickly removed if someone tries recreating it.

One of the things that attracts people to Wikipedia is the openness of the project. It has broadened the concept of what an encyclopedia can be. Recently, I've been seeing that change, and we seem to becoming stodgy. Certainly, my own view is just one person's opinion. But the point is this... If we are going to move the project in a certain direction, it should be because there is broad community support for movement in that direction. It should not be because of a quirk in how our systems are set up. It is for this reason that I respectfully ask that you change the closing to "No consensus" and encourage broader community discussion about the issues. Thank you. -- SamuelWantman 07:41, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Email would be lovely, Phaedriel, thanks. I look forward to it. Tvoz |talk 03:25, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Page protection

Hi Phaedriel, I'm aware of the "wrong version" issues and of course am absolutely in favour of consensus-building. However, I don't believe that protection of this page was ever in order, and so I don't think it is necessarily ideal to maintain protection until there is 100% agreement among us. My reasoning is that the protection ensued after one newer user's phrasing was objected to and reverted by three experienced editors. The new user, who had in the past been blocked for 3RR violations, went on to again violate 3RR, that is to force his version on others in spite of the 3:1 "consensus" (obviously rough, but practical). When reported, instead of being blocked or even warned, the page was protected to his version as if the edit-warring was mutual. So aside from conveying the message that edit-warring works, it does not seem appropriate to me that the entry should remain with that user's disputed text instead of that endorsed by the rest of us. Obviously Wikipedia won't come tumbling down, but it still doesn't sit well with me (though I'm admittedly an involved party). Cheers, and do share your thoughts, even if they be a complete refutation of mine ;-) TewfikTalk 02:34, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Wow! What a charming and well-thought message you've left ;-) I do appreciate your offer, and as I've been away a short while, I'll follow up and keep you appraised of any progress. On an entirely unrelated point, I saw a message on your Talk mentioning your userpage makeover skills. If indeed you are doing some of that type of work, I'd really appreciate some help, as the {{User FixMyPage}} brought a very eager user's help (12-years old and quite the expert!), but it wasn't entirely to my liking. Maybe you could have a look? Cheers, TewfikTalk 23:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks - I'm really just looking for three things: 1) When the boxes are all open, the content seems to be a mess, so maybe they could be made to look nice (I've asked someone familiar with tables and such to try to make the boxes default to 'show'); 2)A consistent colour-scheme/look-and-feel for user and Talk pages 3) Whatever personality Phaedriel might want to throw in - Cheers, TewfikTalk 18:39, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind post! I had checked my talk page and found that you never posted there and checked your talk page and found that I never posted here. User Page

Dear Phaedriel,

I do apologise for failing to write to you as soon as possible regarding the new user page.

Once again, I thank you for your unsurpassed generosity!

Here are some pointers you requested in order to simplify the process:

  • I would like an elegant mathematical symbol to be the theme of my user page (e.g. π)
  • The colours Ivory (#FFFFF0), Papaya whip (#FFEFD5) and Pear (#D1E231) are favoured (although do not all have to be used)
  • I would like a Wikipedia advert -
  • Any other additions (e.g. Userboxes etc.) are appreciated
  • Maybe a box for a ‘picture of the day’

Yours Gratefully,

User:Hortensio

Block Request

In light of some recent events and after reviewing my recent contributions, I have concluded that I'm damaging Wikipedia more than I'm helping it. For this reason, I have decided to take a Wikibreak until Monday, June 16, 2007 to evaluate my edits and learn from my mistakes. To make sure I do not edit during this period, I ask to be voluntarily blocked until said time and request that any and ALL unblock requests be denied immediately. Please block me when you have the time. Just in case, I am absolutely sure that I want to do this, as it is for Wikipedia's sake. Thank you, and happy editing! Yours sincerely, Eddie 12:31, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for wasting your time. I'll be using the script from now on. Thanks for unblocking me. Happy editing! Eddie 23:17, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

could I ask you for an opinion?

Hi! I hope all is well with you and your little girl. I've added the painting of a little girl you posted to me to my user page!

I would like an uninvolved party - you - to look at something. My first article was Senang Hati Foundation and it has been dogged by notability and COI boxes. Today I seem to have annoyed a user with my views on tv show episode notability and he resurrected a notability box on the article. The whole issue can be found on my talk page and the article's plus this note. I feel the article is notable and my only COI is that I have been there and met several of the members once. Terima kasih. --Jack Merridew 16:21, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to look into this. If you found anything interesting or any new sources, updated the article! The COI claim was made because the original user name I chose was Senang Hati — ‘Happy Heart’ — which I liked. It seems inappropriate for me to remove the remaining tag so I've left the article to its fate and the possibility that someone will edit the article enough to feel that it is no longer substantially my words. I did take a few pictures while there and recall one of a cute kid who had just received a new wheelchair; I'll see if I can find it. If Matthew leaves things be I'd not raise the issue with him; if not you might ask him about his overall views on notability (which he seems to have a very low threshold for establishing). Terima kasih (‘thank you’).
I can see why you've little free time — your talk page overflows! It is constantly appearing near the top of my watchlist. Best wishes to your daughter, whom I expect is part of your off-wiki distraction. --Jack Merridew 10:10, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
