Origins Awards

Hello, I think adding a link to http://www.originsgames.com/ in all those different game pages amounts to what is called link spam around here. Why not just make sure that Origins Awards is linked from these articles, and add a single link to http://www.originsgames.com/reference/oa_winners/ there? Lupo 11:54, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Two reasons, I guess:

1. My welcome message said I should cite my sources - though if you think I'm going too far, fair enough.
2. It's pretty awkward to find the links on their site, or at least that's what I found.

I suggest you bring this up on the Origins Award discussion page, and see what people there think. If the consensus is just to have one link, I'm happy to let people get rid of them.

Amber: Rebma is vaperware?

Regarding this change, the decision to link "it never arrived" to vaporware seems a bit like editorializing to em. Per the description from the vaporware page "The term implies deception, or at least a negligent degree of optimism; that is, it implies that the announcer knows that product development is in too early a stage to support responsible statements about its completion date, feature set, or even feasibility." (That seems a reasonable enough definition to me.) I'm not aware of particular evidence that Phage was knowingly wrong about the ability to ship Rebma. While I suspect they were overly optimistic, I don't see it as reaching negligent levels. I don't think you intended it to be editorializing, but I think many people will perceive it that way. I'm hesitant to just revert what appears to be a sincere edit. Am I overreacting? Alan De Smet | Talk 22:48, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

I appreciate the contributions you've made to Caylus. Do you think there will never be a separate article on the Essen Game Fair? (I noticed you removed the nonexistent link). I'm glad to see a little information on the game fair at Essen, Germany, but I hope someone will eventually write a separate full article for the influential game fair there. Bastard

I reverted your edits to this disambiguation page. There is a style for disambig pages, see MoS:DP. In particular do not pipe links and only list things that somebody would be looking for on that page - someone would not type in "bastard" when looking for "Bastard wants to hit me". The Pattern

I added a sentence regarding the ultimate origin of the Jewel of Judgment. You rewrote it and moved it from the "Jewel of Judgment" section to the "Merlin Cycle" section. Your rewrite is an improvement. However, I believe that it was more appropriately located where I had it - as the dénouement of the Jewel section.

While I have the right to move it back, I shall defer to you, merely urging that you reconsider the placement. B00P 18:35, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm keen to retain a distinction between the first-series and second-series canons, since most Amber fans do. Nevertheless, I'm probably going to move the Jewel section into a page on the Amber multiverse (as opposed to the books) at which time it'll be reunited with the origin-related content. RPG WikiProject

Hello, I'm toying with the idea of a WikiProject for roleplaying games. I see that you've edited RPG articles I'm interested in, like Dogs in the Vineyard, and I thought I should ask you what you think of the idea. Do you think it could be done and would you be interested in helping out? I'm a long-time reader, but I haven't edited anything yet, so I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you might have. I've talked a bit about it on my blog. I don't want to start anything without following through, and I want to avoid starting something I can't finish. But a WikiProject would be a good way to coordinate efforts, and it would be easier to attract more people to improve RPG articles, don't you think?

Yes, I think it could be done, and yes, I'd love to help out. I'll read up on Wikiprojects tomorrow and see what I can think of.

Also, a newbie question. Is it customary to add new stuff at the top or at the bottom of people's talk pages? If it should go at the bottom, feel free to move it. Apologies and a request

Mr. Snoodle, I would first like to apologize for coming across as overly strident in our discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Role-playing games. While I do not really agree with your argument, I honestly do understand your point of view. All I would ask, though, is that you address your intended changes before other affected parties (notably WP:CVG) with an open mind. Even if consensus holds up your interpretation, it will at least get others involved in correcting what can only be called a systemic bias. Thank you. I apoligise too - I wasn't feeling well and shouldn't have posted - at least, not in the tone I did. I certainly shall hold off on any changes, at least until I think I can justify them to the CVG crowd - whose position I likewise can appreciate, as someone with an interest in how terminology can prevent comminication between groups who otherwise could have a lot to say to each other. Violence categorization

Hi Percy. It's great that Violence has attracted so much interest lately. I think it would be even better if the game could be categorised in a way that could achieve consensus for more than a few days. (It's been recategorised twice in three days.)

I think the game fits into the crime or thriller genre better than the horror genre. It lacks the element of the supernatural that I associate with the horror genre, while its ultra-violence reminds me of A Clockwork Orange and Straw Dogs. I'm not sure that there are enough crime or thriller RPGs to justify a separate subcategory, though. Ditto, satirical RPGs.

I liked your idea you mentioned in the Published role-playing games discussion about merging Table-top roleplaying games into Role-playing games. For the reasons cited in that discussion, I think Violence would be better off without being in a subcategory. What do you think? - Salvor Hardin 17:26, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Classic Traveller and Cart before Horse

Hi Percy... let me start by saying that I support the project to clean up RPG articles. However, I wish to register a complaint with what you di d to the Classic Traveller page. When you edited it to the soon to be new category definitions, you changed it from an existing (and still existing) category to a nonexistent (and still nonexistent) category. You also didn't put any hint in the edit message as to what you were doing, why you were doing it, or that the WikiProject on RPGs even existed.

Now that I've dug around a bit I understand, and I agree with the direction of things. But as a general rule, the way changes are made should be clearer and better documented. If you're going to shift categories around, create the new category first, and then add it to stuff. Adding red links to articles is always a mistake. And the edit notes when you make changes should explain what's going on, and if there's a WikiProject or some such involved should note that so people know where to go looking for info.

That said, I'm joining the RPG cleanup as a sympathizer. I encourage you to keep going, but... just a bit more slowly and carefully and with slightly better documentation when you edit? Thanks... Georgewilliamherbert 21:17, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

I think you're overreacting a bit... Category:Science Fiction role-playing games was a typo for Category:Science fiction role-playing games, a category which did exist at the time. Sorry - these things happen. Percy Snoodle 09:45, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

I figured that out about the category somewhat later, too. But... what you did, was zap a working category out, replace it with a broken cateogry link (even if that was just a typo), with no edit message explanation of what, why, or that there was a WikiProject in progress on RPGs in general.

To a naive observer who doesn't dig around some, that would have looked exactly like random vandalism. It took me about a half hour's effort to get to the point that I understood what all was really going on. A lot of people would have concluded you were a vandal and reacted that way without expending that effort... I had an inkling something more was probably going on, but that was just a feeling before I reached the end of looking around and had it all figured out.

As I said, the project to clean stuff up is good, and thanks for working on it. But it will help keep your reputation in good standing if you don't accidentally convince people that you're vandalizing pages. The minute you spend checking the article for good links after an edit, and the minute you spend on writing up the change for the Edit summary, are worth it.

Attribute/Abillity score merge wrong direction?

Hi, Percy. I noticed you merged Ability score into Attribute (role-playing games), without participating in the discussion. Thanks for the merge, but I actually thought I had stated a pretty good argument that "Ability score" was the better name. There weren't any objections since my point, at least. How do you feel about us moving it back there? Should we discuss it further there, or on the Wikiproject? - GRuban 13:51, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Indie Gaming

I noticed that you started up an Indie-Rpg article while being aware of the Indie Gaming article. Considering the current size of the Indie RPG article, it is somewhat curious that it should belong in its own article, rather than as a sub-category of the larger concept. Is there a particular reason for this? If not, and if you have no objections, I would like to merge the two articles. Thank you for your time, Thought 19:24, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
