Please don't change the spelling in articles that are written in English English. These include every article about the UK and Commonwealth countries, and most articles about specifically European subjects.
Differences between British and US spelling include:
- Colour, labour etc not color, labor
- s not z in words ending in "ise" eg civilise not civilize, civilisation not civilization.
- double the last letter before adding "ed" or "ing" eg refer, referred, referring.

- Although regarded as universal property, Leonardo is European. The art of the Renaissance is European. England, as part of the EU, is also European. English-speaking Europeans generally cope with the vagaries of English spelling and grammar to a degree which I, as a native speaker, find impressive.
- The entire article is currently written with English spelling. It is wiki policy to maintain a single spelling style within any given article. As it happens, the article under discussion has been written mainly by Brits, Colonials and Italians, and is currently (as far as I am aware) consistent in its spelling.
- Firstly, if you were to change the spelling throughout the article, it could not possibly be considered as "correction". Such an action is quite unnecessary. On the other hand, if the article was about James McNeill Whistler, for example, it would be quite appropriate.
- Secondly, under the circumstance that you have been requested not to change the spelling, it would hardly be appropriate action.
- Thirdly, as I am by far the greater contributor to the article, I personally would consider such a change (were you to proceed with it) as a rudeness and bloody-mindedness.
- I'm currently trying to work on a major architecture article. I don't want to have to think about this right now... because I'm trying to get my head around Gothic domestic architecture.
