According to the book, Leaders of the Information Age, edited by David Weil, there are 255 pioneers through the years who have made significant contributions to how we use technology. The categories of contributions include entrepreneurs, mathematicians, engineers, philosophers, and inventors. The book represents the foundation for studying the progression of computing.

Inventors

Inventors featured are those who were some of the first to advance our ability to communicate with others and make our work easier. The inventions serve as the cornerstone of many industries. Seymour Cray is the inventor of the first supercomputer. The United States now has 3 of the 5 fastest supercomputers. They are the No. 1: Titan, 2. Sequoia, 3.. Mira. Japan has the K-Computer, and Germany the Juqeen. Supercomputers are used for processing large amounts of data, weather forecasting, and oil exploration. Vannevar Bush is known for his work during World War II and the first to have an operable computer. John Vincent Atanasoff along with Clifford Berry invented the first electronic computer. Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web and chairs the World Wide Web Consortium. Software inventors include Linus Torvalds, Nolan Bushnell, and Kenneth Thompson.

Women In Computing

Featured in the text are four women who made outstanding contributions to the information age. Augusta Ada Lovelace worked with Charles Babbage creator of the difference engine and is considered the first computer programmer. Grace Hopper who was a Navy Admiral, is known for her work in creating COBOL Common Business-Oriented Language. Sandra Lerner co-founder of Cisco Systems responsible along with her husband Leonard Bosack, for creating routers which are used to connect computers to form networks. Hedy Lamarr an actress discovered Frequency Hopping. Ms. Lamarr worked with George Antheil to invent a method for destroying torpedoes during World War II. Ms. Lamarr’s work is now used with cell phone technology.

Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs are responsible for a worldwide presence of information technology. Computers are everywhere all sizes from micro- to super. Bill Gates the visionary has impacted society in a big way. Bill Gates along with Paul Allen founded Microsoft. We have been the beneficiaries of their genius creating operating systems for IBM computers and packaging them with a browser, Internet Explorer. The Microsoft Office Suite is used worldwide, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Steve Jobs Apple co-founder helped to generate an empire of Apple Products: The Mac, IPhone, IPad, and IPod. Today video games are popular with all ages. Nolan Bushnell created the first commercially successful video game.

Summary

Leaders of the Information Age are a diverse group and through their education, creativity, and resourcefulness have contributed ways for people around the world to create, save, retrieve, and share information.
