AdSteam

(From User talk:Spy007au#AdSteam and here. i.e. merged)
Referring to User:Spy007au/Sandbox2.

Do you actually intend to do something about creating an "AdSteam" article?
If so, I think that's "really good"!
If you would like help doing so, just tell me what help you'd like.
FYI, I started an article, (User talk:Pdfpdf/AdSteam), but "ran out of steam".(Groan ... )

Hey there,
Yes, I actually started working on it last night. It's in my sandbox User:Spy007au/Sandbox2. I would happy to combine resources, if you want. Wikipedia is only a hobby for me, when I get some free time, so I can go days without editing. From what I can see, there is a real need for the article. Let me know.
Regards, Spy007au (talk) 21:21, 23 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

"I actually started working on it last night" - Wow! You made VERY good progress!
"I would happy ... " - Yes please.
("Wikipedia is only a hobby for me ... " - That sounds nice; it's a goal I'm working towards, but haven't quite achieved yet ... )
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 04:09, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, please feel free to jump into my sandbox anytime and add to the article. I'll be watching State of Origin tonight, so won't be editing, but will probably start doing some more researching and writing tomorrow night. I usually put my articles up for DYK, so once the article is complete, we can submit it as a joint effort. BTW, I was born and raised in Adelaide, hence my interest in this article. Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 07:54, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I like what you've been doing, and I think that this is very nice! Yes, I was always amused by the fact that AdSteam owned 15% of Westpac, financed by money AdSteam had borrowed from Westpac. Another Spalvins trick was DJs owned a controlling interest in AdSteam, and AdSteam owned a controlling interest in DJs, making the pair "takeover-proof". (And yes, the boards of the two companies had very similar membership.) I had a complete set of AdSteam annual reports from 1985-1995, but I had a big cleanup last year and threw them out ...
So, where do you want me to go from here? Pdfpdf (talk) 10:40, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you could start working on the demise section, that would be great. I still have a lot of cleaning-up to do and I want to find some more sound references to support the material to date. I'll do some more work on the article tomorrow some-time, but please feel free to add, change, amend as you feel necessary. I just appreciate the help. Regards, Spy007au (talk) 13:08, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK. Thanks. --Pdfpdf (talk) 13:13, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

WOW, you certainly have added a lot of material and worked on the article. It's looking great. I didn't realise AdSteam had so much history/information surrounding it. No wonder you lost steam (pardon the pun) earlier on. I have been very quiet with the researching, editing and writing the past few days. Have been busy in real life, but will put some time aside in the next few days to see if we can complete it. Once again, I really appreciate your help with this article. Regards, Spy007au (talk) 09:30, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're very polite, and thanks for the encouragement, but I agreed to work on "demise", and haven't done a thing on that section. Still, WP is supposed to be "recreation" ...
"I didn't realise ... " - Well, I didn't know about the ANA ownership! That must have been a "nice little earner" until the Govt stood up TAA and took away their monopoly!!
The statement: "1940s Diversified into towage, shipbuilding, salt, coal and sugar industries" sounds interesting. "Towage" we know about, but "shipbuilding, salt, coal and sugar industries"??
"but will put some time aside in the next few days to see if we can complete it." - I'm in no hurry. The more I look, the more surprises I find! I don't expect to find another major surprise like ANA, but I'd almost be prepared to wager that there's more to find than "just" shipbuilding, salt, coal and sugar.
"Once again, I really appreciate your help" - and I appreciate the motivation provided by having someone to work with and bounce opinions off of. To labour that pun even further, it keeps up my level of steam. Yes, another groan ...

Hey, your research and collection of data is outstanding and has far exceeded my initial expectations for this article. Ive been dabling in your research material, but are you comfortable if I start incorporating some of your raw data into the main article? Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 12:43, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the positive feedback, it is appreciated. Would you mind wrapping up the "Corporate Raider" section as you appear to have the knowledge and interest. I have to go to Alice Springs for work next week, so I'll be off-line for a few days, but will try and do as much as possible before I go. If possible, I would like to wrap the article up asap, so please feel free to finalise. Regards, Spy007au (talk) 01:20, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's a good pick-up. I managed to find this article [1] from the QLD Govt, which also mentions their involvement in coal and sugar trade. I'll add the reference to the article, but if you would prefer to change or remove, that's Ok with me. Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 03:48, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks like a great article to me. Really appreciate your help. How about you do the honors of listing. Regards, Spy007au (talk) 04:07, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

That picture is looking bloody big now ! Hey, can you remind me how do I force-insert the position of a TOC ? -Sticks66 13:35, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Howdy indeed. This bloke though born in NZ was a crow-eater like you. So you may want to check the article is neat and tidy. Did you see my Q above re the TOC ?-Sticks66 13:43, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
On Weathers the TOC appears above the Ref section since I haven't put in any other section heads. Would prefer not to add meaningless other headers and would rather just position at the TOC at the top of the article. Rgds -Sticks66 13:51, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Are you saying my suggestion to move the TOC is what's different and therefore a potential issue ? Or are you saying that the way I've done the 3 subsections of refs is different ? -Sticks66 14:07, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I've noticed the constrained project protocols on military articles. My go is writing content. The long and laboured process of researching, stealing and blending copy and putting it together in a hopefully half-interesting manner such as on this and this. Along the way I'll also add pre-1955 PD photos where I can. So if anyone wants to whinge about my page layouts (& fix them) I really don't care. I well expect that I'm a better copywriter than art director.-Sticks66 14:29, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

No big deal--just curious to know why you've redlinked Southcorp Wines but none of the other wineries named in the paragraph. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 02:49, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I did a "What links here" on Southcorp Wines. (It seems that almost nothing does.)
I guess I must have thought it would be a good idea to create a few links that did "link here". (It seemed like a "good idea" at the time ... )
(I'm collaborating on developing an article on the Adelaide Steamship Company; AdSteam sold its wineries to SA Brewing Holdings, who "gathered" them into "Southcorp Wines". When the AdSteam article is fit to stand up, I'll start addressing the red links like "Southcorp Wines".)
Feel free to revert it if you wish; it will be a while before I get to writing the article.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:01, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nuh. As I say, it's no big deal, and Wikipedia can well handle such branchlines. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 14:30, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Adelaide Steamship Co

Fantastic. Has been great working with you. Clears up a lot or red space on many other atricles. Thanks again. Spy007au (talk) 12:35, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Would like to list the article on DYK as a joint effort (your IT skills are significantly better than mine).

... in partnership with McIlwraith, McEacharn & Co., the Adelaide Steamship Company developed the world's first purpose built container ships?

Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 13:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Be aware that Containerization#Purpose-built_ships contains contradictory (albeit unreferenced) claims. –Moondyne 15:17, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

G'day!

Three questions:
1) How goes it?
I'm good thanks, public holiday here in Darwin today (show day), so it's agood day.
2) What's the DYK status?
I listed the article here: [2] Waiting for someone to review it. I looked into the contrary unsourced claim, but I am comfortable that our "hook" has several independent and reliable sources, so decided to let it run. I'm still considering raising the issue on the container ship talk page.
3) Cats: "Ocean Liners"? Really?
I placed that cat in during the early drafting stages while populating the article, but agree, it probably should not be there if you want to remove it.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
P.S. You probably noticed that with a concerted effort I got the #refs to 100! (What do I do now???) Pdfpdf (talk) 13:29, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Let's aim for 150!! Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 23:49, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good Work PDfpdf ! I am glad to see you used works by Ronald Parsons, as he is certainly a good authority on SA maritime history. From my reading ( I have a Parson's book I'm using to work on another article) there is much from founding to the 20th century that may be of interest to add (labour disputes, strikes, coal wars etc). Wonderful to see another well researched SA article ! - Peripitus (Talk) 13:00, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Otrem

I left some notes at here and will to add to that as I can. I still have nothing citeable, so it's probably a big waste of time, but it is interesting (for me anyway). –Moondyne 07:59, 22 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I saw your add's there. Nothing more from me at this stage, but am still fishing. I went to the Peterborough plant once a long long time ago. It was ... ummm ... interesting. –Moondyne 13:45, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

That seems reasonable. I couldn't find a cite that Donaldson was claiming or receiving his allowance, and I doubt we ever will know (Why should we?). Your wording seems reasonable, feel free to go ahead and add it in. Regards, Woody (talk) 15:22, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Milk

You're probably right. I actually came across this a few weeks ago and was wondering if it was a mistake but did a quick search and found that 1.1L bottles did seem to exist in Australia so decided it was a bit complicated and never edited it. I remembered it recently and so decided I should correct it. Looking now at an Australian online supermarket website it appears both 1L and 1.1L milk bottles exist with 1L possibly being the more common form. Here in NZ on the otherhand 1.1L bottles don't exist AFAIK at least I've never seen any but I've also never paid much attention so I could be wrong. As you've said though, the whole thing is unsourced Nil Einne (talk) 17:41, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Adelaide Steamship Company

On July 29, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Adelaide Steamship Company, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Hila Levy

Hello Pdfpdf, thank you for mentioning your concern in my tlak page. Thanks to you I found out that soemone blanked and created a redirect page of Hila Levy which is intended to be a disambiguation page. I fixed it. The reason for the disambiguation is that there are two people with the exact same name even if one does not have an article. Hila Levy, made history when she became the first Puerto Rican to be awarded a Rhodes scholarship and has been featured in various newspaper articles as such. Being the first among her people does make her notable. Happy editing Tony the Marine (talk) 02:18, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: AfD

Hi! I understand what you're coming from, but the way I see it, the only reason IPs can't start AfDs is because they have a technical limitation (they can't create new pages). If the editor wants to start an AfD, they should be allowed to. In any case, they can explain their reasoning on the AfD page. Of course, discussing on the talk page first would be the preferable option but it seems that they've decided not to. As a personal opinion, I'm against deleting the article, but I will start the AfD for the IP if they ask me to. Jafeluv (talk) 11:21, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Since the IP did give their reasoning on the talk page, I've completed the AfD nomination for them. The AfD entry is here. Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 08:09, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: LC Puzzle

It's terrible, I completely forget writing that message! But given the "accidental" election of Ann Bressington to the state upper house fascinated me at the time, it must have been me writing that.

As far as "voting for a group below the line" goes, it would be possible to do it "manually". The voter would put the numbers 1 to x (x being 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6) in order in the column of candidates for that group below the line. I suppose that's what the quoted text refers to.

I actually found the email from the State Electoral Office and paste it here with email addresses censored:

Lisa the first preference votes for 'each' candidate are not on the web site.

Ind Nick Xenophon No Pokies group polled 167 594 above the line ticket votes and 8 below the line = 167 602
Nick Z received 23 263 below the line first preferences , Bressington received 32 and Darley 61. Total first preferences = 190 958

Two things: 1) This is not helpful, and has been reverted. 2) Wikipedia is a volunteer site - I do pop in regularly, but am not sitting in front of a screen 24/7. You say at the top of this page that you know there is a life outside Wikipedia, yet you give me nine minutes between requesting an explanation at my talkpage and making a negative comment at my admin review. I will happily engage in discussion, and have yet to find anyone say otherwise - my archives are full of it - but with respect, I cannot spend every waking second waiting for someone to ask me a question. response to your initial inquiry is at my talkpage Fritzpoll (talk) 14:58, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

NZ Rhodes scholars

I'm sorry that I clicked on a button that I didn't intend to. However, in light of your complaining, I have given your article a second look and found several problems: a title that does not follow the Manual of Style ("NZ" instead of "New Zealand"), lack of an explanation as to what this list is, and obvious formatting problems. Moreover, the list has no references for verification, and has some obvious template problems as well. I'll assume good faith that this is a work in progress, but you might help your cause by placing an {{underconstruction}} template at the top. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 13:56, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
