Regarding barangays

I have reverted your changes to Cebu's town's articles wherein you deemphasized barangays and instead used barrios or districts. These government units are officially called barangays. For example, the website of Sogod, Cebu uses the term barangays: [1]. --seav (talk) 14:26, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Do you have a source to back that assertion up? "Barangay" is the official administrative name for these local government units in English and linking to both barrio and barangay, which both talk about different things will confuse the reader. From a cebuano point of view Barangay and Barrio are the same thing. Cebuano in the other hand is different to Tagalog in terms of dialects. Cebuano is the other hand, count their numbers 1 to 10 both in Binisaya, and Spanish. The word kaibigan in Tagalog, stands for Amigo in Cebuano. I'm not being political here, but this how we used things here in cebu. -- User:Pardocebu 3:31, 6 January (UTC)

But I guess using a more general and commonly used term, rather than trying to emphasize your point of view, would be better. We here at Wikipedia discourage censorship or emphasis on a single group or entity so as to make things fair for everyone. Blake Gripling (talk) 04:55, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I'd prefer you don't add "barrio" to the articles, it's just redundant. And do not replace the word "barangay" with "district", that is simply incorrect. TheCoffee (talk) 14:52, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Even if it were true that barrio and barangay are synonyms in the Cebuano language, this is the English-language Wikipedia and the proper English term for these things is barangay and using barrio (in English) is imprecise. --seav (talk) 15:26, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes it is true. District should be used in English langauges instead of Barangay. It needs to be presented in a professional way. It is an encyclopedia. People from Manila have to may political issues in regards to many topics. And also the districts in cebu are "not politically divided". User:Pardocebu

Barangay is an English word. If there's an English equivalent of "barangay", it is village or community. –Howard the Duck 04:39, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

The phrase "politically divided" is used in the context of political science and it means that these cities and municipalities, as political entities, are further subdivided into smaller entities, namely barangays. It does not mean that they are divided into warring political parties, if that's what you are referring to. If you want, you can use the phrase "administratively divided". But the proper term is still "barangay" and it's a valid English word that can be seen in various official documents (even Cebuano politicians and websites use the term). And bringing Manila to this discussion does not seem to be proper; this has nothing to do with Manila's political problems. --seav (talk) 07:09, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Use of acute accents

In general, for contemporary names, acute accents are not used. While these names may have Spanish origins, modern Philippine English usage is to omit most types of accents (except the tilde on 'N' in many names such as Osmeña and Parañaque).
