Help Request

Hello. I'm the same user as Paquito490 and had to create this new account as I was locked out of my old one. I was wondering if anyone could help me set my manual archiving again because I don't remember how it was set up in the first place. Also, is there a way to transfer the archives from my old account to this account? Thanks.

Hey! I've put in redirects from your old user page and talk page, but I'm afraid I can't mess with page history without proof that you owned the previous account. I assume you've attempted to reset the password using Special:PasswordReset. I'm not sure what you mean by manual archiving, but I can't find any custom scripts installed on your previous account. TheDragonFire (talk) 03:28, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello TheDragonFire, thanks for creating those redirects. I'm not exactly sure how I can provide proof that I owned Paquito490; I can only give my word for it unless there's some feature to do so. As far as manual archiving, what I meant was that on my old account, a user named DUCKISJAMMMY created an archivebox for me that allowed me to create archives of past messages and archive messages older than 30 days myself (instead of having a bot automatically archive my messages). I was trying to see if someone could assist me with that as I don't know what code DUCKISJAMMMY used to set up that archive system. Paquito590 (talk) 06:58, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Not TheDragonFire, but if you create your archive as outlined in Help:Archiving a talk page#Subpage archive method, the talk page header will automatically link to archive pages - provided you name them correctly. Skip step 6 in the green box, and you should be good to go. Cheers, Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 02:23, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Adding my 10 cents. Remember to add {{User alternative account name|Paquito490}} to User:Paquito590 which will generate
This user has an alternative account named Paquito490.

Categories

Thank you for creating the category, but I think I should inform you that that's not how categories work. You don't have to copy the list of pages into the category page. Instead you just add

[[CATEGORY: thecategorynamehere]]

at the bottom of each page of the articles that are supposed to be in the new requested category for creation.

In the request, it lists "parent categories", so these should be added to the category page in the same manner.

Thanks for your hard work. -- 70.51.203.56 (talk) 04:26, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment, I realize I didn't correctly create the category. I had trouble understanding how the code worked for categories as it gave me a different result than what it is currently. Taking a look at your edits, it has become more clear to me how categories should be created. Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 19:00, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Help Request #2

Hello, can anyone show me how to correctly create categories? I attempted creating one but was informed by another user that I hadn't done it correctly. I was confused by the user's explanation and wasn't able to figure out how to correctly create categories. I am currently interested in helping at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects but am having trouble with the category requests. Paquito590 (talk) 19:10, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

UPDATE: I just recently created a new category here. Can you check to see if I did it correctly? Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 19:32, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
That category looks good to me. Huon (talk) 20:35, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the response Huon. Glad to see this category was created correctly this time. Paquito590 (talk) 01:42, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Far-wing terrorism

Hi, I see that you accepted a request to create a redirect, at Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/Redirects#Redirect_request:_Far-wing_terrorism_in_the_United_Kingdom.

Surely the intended redirect name should have been Far-right_terrorism_in_the_United_Kingdom, not "Far-wing"? – Fayenatic London 20:58, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello Fayenatic london. I can create a redirect for the page you mentioned if you'd like. It is certainly possible that it should have been "Far-right" but I'm not quite sure. I would have to ask the user who requested the redirect. Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 01:41, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
I went ahead and created the redirect as it seems very likely to be used. Hope that is fine. Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 02:05, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Sure, that one's fine. In your place, I'd just delete "Far-wing" and change the closing comment at the AfC page with an explanation, as the request was clearly a mistake. – Fayenatic London 06:28, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. Paquito590 (talk) 20:54, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

For info, I have now listed it at WP:RFD. – Fayenatic London 23:35, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for doing so, it appears the redirect has been deleted. Paquito590 (talk) 18:55, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

Admin Help Request

Hello, can I ask that an administrator provide me with insight as to why three recent redirects I created got deleted? The redirect names are: Big Hoose, Big hoose and The big hoose. The discussion pertaining to the request can be found on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects and it's the first request on the list. Admin Anthony Bradbury deleted my redirects because apparently they were typos, but the truth is that the requester of the redirects said those names weren't typos and were alternative names to HM Prison Barlinnie. I was also provided with four sources confirming the use of the terms. I originally contested the deletion but it appears that Anthony Bradbury didn't even take the time to read the reasoning. For the aforementioned reasons, I would like some assistance with this issue (Note that Anthony Bradbury undeleted redirect "The Big Hoose"). Please let me know if I made any mistakes as I would like to be a better editor on Wikipedia. Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 19:03, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

"Because they were typos?" Does this man understand what the purpose of a redirect is? WP:POFR clearly lists likely misspellings as one of the main reasons to create a redirect. Anyway, The big hoose would be a differently capitalized {{R from alternative name}}, valid because it's {{R from miscapitalisation}} to The Big Hoose (bolded in the target article as a legitimate alternative name, no wonder it got promptly undeleted) routed directly to HM Prison Barlinnie to avoid double redirection. Big Hoose is the same as The Big Hoose but without "the" and Big hoose is just that plus it's differently capitalized. These were good redirects and shouldn't have been deleted. Recreate them, properly tagged, and if he deletes again, go straight to Wikipedia:Deletion review. 78.28.45.127 (talk) 14:59, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, I will re-create the redirects and if deleted again will seek resolution on the noticeboards. Paquito590 (talk) 16:25, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
I have closed this request for admin help as consensus was reached between the deleting admin and the community to keep the redirects. Thanks again for your help. Paquito590 (talk) 19:01, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

Categories

Thanks for your help in creating categories. Just an FYI, in the category requests, there's a section called

Parent category/categories:

The items listed in the section are not categorized into the new category, instead, the items found here are attached as categories for the new category (ie. they go onto the new category page as categorizations of that category)

-- 70.51.203.56 (talk) 03:56, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying that mistake; I noticed that indeed something didn't look right about the category I created and it turns out I did the parent categorization wrong. Thanks for fixing those mistakes and for the message. Paquito590 (talk) 15:36, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

How to Make a Spaceship (Julian Guthrie) listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect How to Make a Spaceship (Julian Guthrie). Since you had some involvement with the How to Make a Spaceship (Julian Guthrie) redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:40, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi. There is no need to create redirects if the name if the article is already in the search term, they will be deleted but it puts pressure on our maintenance volunteers. Try to think like someone looking for an article: they will type 'How to make a spaceship', not 'How to make a spacship (book)'. Our built-in search engine is professional stuff. You can get these superfluous redirects deleted quicker yourself by putting this template {{Db-self}} on the top of the redirect: , they will disappear in a few moments. Happy editing ! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:28, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the message. I apologize for the redirect; I actually think that there are people that would include the term book in the search because they want to filter the results down to what they need. I would suggest that maybe this redirect could be kept, just that the parentheses be removed from "book". Let me know what you think. Thanks. Paquito590 (talk) 18:22, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
The way people search for things has been the subject of a lot of top level scientific study. That's why Google is so good at what it does. These redirects you are creating are unnecessary. You can either get them deleted by putting {{Db-self}} on them, or I will have to list hem at RfD and our volunteers will groan about the extra work. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:37, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
I don't see why these redirects are unnecessary and these are redirects I created per requests at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects. You can delete them if you want to but I would rather keep them as I feel they do have a much needed use. Paquito590 (talk) 19:09, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
  • @Kudpung: Consensus (so far...) at the RfD is strongly towards keeping, probably because these are classic examples of good redirects. Remember they are cheap. Remember also people often use copypaste to add in names of things exactly as they appear in sources. Finally, remember this note from RfD: "Hint: If someone says they find a redirect useful, they probably do. You might not find it useful—this is not because the other person is being untruthful, but because you browse Wikipedia in different ways." The fact this was requested by another IP editor in and of itself demonstrates somebody finds it useful. -- BobTheIP editing as 88.111.202.102 (talk) 22:07, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
