Dialog/Dialogue

Just FYI, dialog is an acceptable spelling of this word, although non-American, I think. In this particular case your change was correct, so I haven't changed it, but make sure you don't correct spelling merely when a different national variety of English is being used. This is a regular mistake on English Wikipedia, and you can read more about it in the Manual of Style. Thanks! Natalie 14:42, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

To be honest, I had to check. But our own article is under "dialog"! Natalie 15:53, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}} Find the formality guideline

Why does this always happen? I read something just yesterday about the guideline for formality on Wikipedia, about formal language not being required... Today I want to use it and for the life of me I can't remember where it was! Anyone care to point me in the right direction? PaladinWhite 18:16, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Questions about Wikipedia

Hey! If you have questions about Wikipedia that you'd like answered, please check out an IRC channel on freenode, which enables you to ask questions in real time. It's called #wikipedia-bootcamp, and you can learn about using it (among others) here. Otherwise, you can continue to use {{helpme}}, and you've done a lot of that! Thanks for your curiosity and willingness to learn. See you around. Happy editing, GracenotesT § 02:03, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Your question

Hey, according to this, the title of a short story should be put in quotation marks, as opposed to italics. I believe this is the same convention followed in most style guides. Carom 04:11, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

How in the heck did I miss that? I CTRL+Fed it twice just to make sure... Oh well, thanks for pointing out my blind spot! I figured that would be the policy if there was one, because as you said, it's pretty standard, but I didn't want to assume that policy elsewhere held true here without checking.

Re:Obtaining an author's image

Well, if the author is willing to uload an image and release it under the GFDL, that would be the ideal situation. However, if there is absolutely no free picture available (and the author is unwilling to provide us with a free image), current policy allows the use of a copyrighted image (it falls under fair use). I would personally recommend against using unfree images, though - remember, the underlying idea of wikipedia is that it's free - and using images under the fair use provisions of copyright law isn't entirely in keeping with that ideal. Also, there is considerable disagreement in the larger community about what, exactly, we can use under fair use, and your image may end up being deleted anyway unless you get all the liscensing ducks in a row (so to speak). In short, if you can get a free image, great. If you can't, I would say that we could probably manage without, for now (but obviously, you are free to disagree, and current policy does, in fact, permit unfree images in certain cirsumstances). Carom 01:37, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

As an addendum, some information on unfree images used under fair use can be found here (not in particular the subhead "Policy"). Carom 01:38, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't intend to use an unfree image, for the reasons you pointed out - why stick it up there if it's likely to get taken down by someone else anyway? I just wasn't sure if asking her if she'd like to provide one would somehow (indirectly) violate policies on editing articles you're involved in (because it provides the opportunity for her to show herself in the light she chooses).
*hits "Send" on the email* Thanks! PaladinWhite 01:41, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
If the authoris willing to provide a free image (either by releasing it into the public domain, or liscensing it under the GFDL), I don't think anyone will complain about it's origin. Also: if you do manage to get a free image, upload it to Commons instead of Wikipedia. Carom 01:44, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, she sent one - I'm fine uploading the image itself, but do I need to upload the email somewhere or do something to "prove" she's given permission for use? PaladinWhite 12:30, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
If you upload it to Wikipedia, use the {{PD-release}} template and you should be fine. If you upload it to Commons, use the {{PD-author}} template, and forward the email to permissions@wikimedia.org with a brief explanation. That's assuming it's a PD image, of course. Carom 16:03, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Now that I've uploaded a couple pictures, am I supposed to wait for some sort of response from the forwarded email before using the images, or do I just forge ahead? PaladinWhite 11:48, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
I would just start using the images - worst case scenario, if there is any kind of problem, they'll just be deleted, and you can always take that up with the deleting admin. Carom 13:36, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}} Translate "just a phrase"

Is there a place on Wikipedia where I can request translation on a small chunk of text? I looked around Wikipedia:Translation, but all I could find was information relating to the translation of an entire article - in this case, only a few phrases in an article need translation. PaladinWhite 02:23, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

No, if you want to translate a page, I would ask a person who is fluent in that language to help you or go to Altavista. Cheers. Real96 02:25, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I could easily enough do a basic translation myself, as I speak passable Spanish. However, the reason I need an outside translator is that the phrases include acronyms or abbreviations which would require backround knowledge of the subject, and therefore some level of cultural nativity. PaladinWhite 02:29, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I recommend you ask at the Wikipedia for that language, or ask someone listed in the relevant Category:Wikipedians by language. —Centrxtalk • 02:37, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) I would not recommend doing a machine translation - WP:Translation states that such a translation is often worse than nothing, due to problems with cultural nativity as you mentioned, and with specialized syntax the program can't comprehend. Try talking to a translator listed here, or list a request for translation and specify the problem there. The template {{Translation}} can be placed on the article's talk page and will provide directions on how to do that. Hersfold (talk/work) 02:37, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

No worries! I will see what I can do with it, I will add it to one of the articles I mentioned. Re: History of a Deleted Page

Well, you can check the deletion log for a page, in this case, here. You can access the deletion log from the page that says "Wikipedia has no article with this name" - there's a link in that big block of text at the top that says somehting like "Check the deletion log". It seem this article was a speed deletions through condition A7, which is wiki-code for "unremarkable people, groups, companies and web content". You can read the full text of A7 here. If you have a problem, you'll want to take it up with the deleting admin (in this case, I would try Cryptic, as Betacommand has rather a lot on his/her plate right now. Let me know if there's anything else I can do. Carom 03:21, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Right-o. I don't know that I have any particular objection to the deletion, now that I at least know what it was for. One more lesson committed to memory, and one editor that much improved! PaladinWhite 04:05, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Image:Curb gutter storm drain.JPG

I've added the location as per your request. What article did you have in mind? Rklawton 23:39, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Ohio images

Hi PaladinWhite, thanks for your note about the deleted images on USS Ohio (SSGN-726). The image deletion log shows:

21:46, 10 April 2007 User:Naconkantari
deleted "Image:Ohio Logo 2.jpg"
Image with no copyright tag as of 28 March 2007

Yes the article looks bare without the images. If you can find replacements with proper copyrights that would be great. Leave me a note :) Best regards, Caltrop 01:02, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

WP:NOT Indiscriminate collection - how-to guide template

Is there a template specific to "Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information," specifically, a how-to guide? The closest I could find was {{Unencyclopedic}}... I don't want to suggest that the page be deleted (as {{Unencyclopedic}} does), I only want to tag it for conversion to a genuine article instead of an instruction manual.

Also, how do you add the template tag to a page, instead of the boilerplate itself, without using <nowiki>? I know there's a way to do it, but I couldn't find it this morning. PaladinWhite 14:34, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

In answer to the second part of your question, I think what you're looking for is the "tl" prefix. For example, {{tl|Unencyclopedic}} displays {{Unencyclopedic}}. Carom 14:38, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Aaaaaand ta-da! I present you with {{howto}}! Carom 14:42, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
And as an addendum, you can use {{gameguide}} as a more specific template. A listing of all cleanup templates can be found here. Carom 15:05, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Hey, don't worry about it - I'm usually around, except when I'm not. ;) Carom 14:45, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Sweet, that was way more than I was looking for, but no less than I needed! I'll definitely be prepared the next time something comes up. PaladinWhite 15:08, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
{{generalize}} is probably the closest thing right now, but you can always suggest a more specific template somewhere (the talk page of the template directory might be a good place), provided you can demonstrate some kind of need. Carom 03:38, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
That'll work - I can't reference anything other than Mucus as a need for a new template, and it will do just fine in this situation. Thanks again! PaladinWhite 03:44, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Reverting the Article

Please take a look at the sources given before reverting. MOST of them are blatantly bias towards tamils and have absolutely said nothing of human right violations against Sinhalese people.I call them dummy human rightist and definitely they should not be quoted..We have had this discussion long a go ,and the disputed author failed to show us the neutrality of these sources.Plus, believe me THERE IS NO PROOF these people died as a result of the war, there are no forensic evidence..If you have anything to say, write it in the talk page.I hope you will bring good evidence to back up claims, then I would have no problem believing this.ThanksIwazaki 会話。討論 02:21, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Dear PaladinWhite, first please understand that I ma very busy these days and I many not reply swiftly toy any queries. if I am late in reply hat means I am occupied with my non-wiki stuff and NOT deliberately ignoring you. Also, please be noted that we live in different parts of the world, and completely different time zones.Which means sometime I may take a half a day(or day) just to notice what you have written..Keep those in our mind, lets get to the point. You got to understand that most of my points are based on valid basis. I don't think some sources can be used to confirm the authentication of the article.Esp the one, British refugee some thing, it looks like a dummy human right organization..Also, there is another human right group, whose members are belong to a leading pro-LTTE tamil party.Obviously we can't take it as a unbiased source.I totally agree with your decision not to make further reverts, BUT I must say that the tags should remain there until we reach consensus. I have added bias source to some sources and those should remain too.If you have anything to say regarding this, please post it at my talk page,as I am not a member of the Sri Lanka reconciliation I am not obliged to reply there..Well I prefer to discuss at either my/your talk page/s or at the articles discussion page. many thanks Iwazaki 会話。討論 13:21, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Mass grave article

I appreciate a neutral guy like you getting involved when involved parties call even Amnesty International as not acceptable :))). Only thing you can do under these circumstances is to get an Admin involved because there is no compromise possible. Your step to take it to Sri lanka reconciliation is step one but I will be off for few days. User:Lexicon another neutral but admin can be of help to you to bring civility to a sitiation when people assume that they have the right to write what ever in Wikipedia because they know better than the sources cited. In the spirit of the time of year, and givent hat you have recently reached 1000 edits and seem to be rattling along rather nicely, it seems appropriate to "graduate" you from the adoption program. Disambiguation entry descriptions

In a dab cleanup comment, you wrote: "Each entry should contain a short description of the subject, per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)". The actual guideline is that descriptions should be as short as possible. In some cases, this means that no description is needed at all -- often the case when the title has a (disambiguating) phrase behind it. If the title of the article is sufficient to attract the readers who were looking for it, that's all that's needed. (This is also alluded to in WP:MOSDAB#Piping). May I ask a favor?

I hope this is your talk page, I am a bit confused by its current contents, but that is besides the point.

I was wondering if I could impose on you to take a few minutes and review Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of fictional diseases. I seem to be of the minority point of view and maybe you could either add support to keeping the list or help me see where I might be totally off base in my thinking. Thank you in advance.

Additionally I would like to thank you for your previous assistance with Ram Dbiel (Talk) 01:44, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
