PKT thanks for the quick comments on my edits on the Soccer Stadiums in Canada site. I agree with your comments; however, you might want to go back to the sight and remove all the non-soccer references. Cheers C23J C23J (talk) 19:29, 1 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your revert on Chester A. Arthur edit

You said that User:CountryCoolGuy12345 was vandalizing the article when he wrote that Arthur was accused of being born in Canada. However, this was not vandalism, it's described on a Smithsonian article[1] and some other articles[2][3]; in fact, it's already mentioned on the article, just in a different place. So just be cautious before you accuse editors of vandalism. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 08:34, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

References

Considering that the user in question had added Chester A. Arthur to List of people from Richmond Hill, Ontario prior to the edit you refer to, and that he has done it again since that time, I have no qualms about calling the user's edits vandalism regardless. PKT(alk) 17:39, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just because one edit is bad doesn't mean the other edits are vandalism. That's not how it works. Furthermore, Arthur was only added to the list of people once, before this edit was reverted. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 18:32, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
As I wrote earlier, "no qualms". You may write me again when you have more experience around here. Have a nice day, PKT(alk) 18:45, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for trying to help this user. The reason I gave him a time limit for improving Draft:Arielle Kayabaga is that, as far as I'm concerned, there's promotional material now sitting in draft. I normally wouldn't have restored it, but I mistook his persistence for a willingness to improve. If he refuses to work with the pointers you've given him, I will be deleting the draft again tomorrow as promised. Deb (talk) 09:06, 25 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021 edit

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello PKT,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

September 2021 Guild of Copy Editors newsletter edit

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

My block / unblock saga edit

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I appear to have been caught in a fishing trawler's net. I currently see this message, "You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia due to a block of your username, IP address, or both. This does not affect your ability to read Wikipedia pages.

Most people who see this message have done nothing wrong. Some kinds of blocks restrict editing from specific service providers or telecom companies in response to recent abuse or vandalism, and affect other users who are unrelated to that abuse. See below if you do not believe you have done anything wrong. Editing from 104.245.144.181 has been blocked (disabled) for the following reason(s):

There are multiple blocks against your account and/or IP address" I am a long-time editor in good standing. Please exempt me from this IP block. Thank you, PKT(alk) 15:22, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

You edited successfully a couple hours prior to your unblock request. If you have changed your physical location in that period of time, I would suggest returning to wherever you were a couple hours ago- you may also need to clear your browser cache. Otherwise, you will need to follow the advice here to contact a Steward, as that IP is globally blocked across all Wikimedia projects(meaning someone is pretty sure it is a webhost). 331dot (talk) 15:39, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

After a few hours away from the PC, my editing rights have been restored. Thanks to whoever took care of this for me. Regards, PKT(alk) 19:24, 6 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
The next morning, it happened again, but later the situation apparently resolved itself. I had put in another unblock request, stating "Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 2607:fea8:91a4:1000:713a:62d3:da2f:b00b (I think). I am a long-time editor, using the same PC I have used for years. The internet service in our house was upgraded and now I'm having these difficulties. It is my understanding that I was added to the 'ipblock-exempt' group back in February 2020. Please unblock me.....Thanks, PKT(alk) 12:16, 7 November 2021 (UTC)" Since I now have editing privileges again, I have removed this morning's unblock request. Decline reason:

You provided two different IPv6 addresses. Neither of them are blocked and you have been able to edit after making the request. Yamla (talk) 14:41, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nov 13th: Blocked again for a few hours, posted an unblock request here, but the block has been lifted as of now. Unblock request was, "Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 2607:fea8:91a4:1000:713a:62d3:da2f:b00b. I am a long-time editor, using the same PC I have used for years. The internet service in our house was upgraded and now I'm having these difficulties. It is my understanding that I was added to the 'ipblock-exempt' group back in February 2020." PKT(alk) 15:23, 13 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nov 16th: Blocked again, but it seemed to get resolved somehow after some hours. Unblock request withdrawn, which was, "Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 2607:fea8:91a4:1000:713a:62d3:da2f:b00b. I am a long-time editor, using the same PC I have used for years (this is my personal PC - earlier today, I used my work PC to edit). The internet service in our house was upgraded and now I'm having these difficulties. It is my understanding that I was added to the 'ipblock-exempt' group back in February 2020." PKT(alk) 23:58, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nov 17th: Again. Tried the unblock routine yet another time, and the block is now gone again, for the time being. Go figure, PKT(alk) 22:09, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nov 18th: Same routine. The gate is now open, so the unblock request is withdrawn.......PKT(alk) 23:02, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nov 26th: Last week, I was usually blocked when I started on this PC, but the blocks eventually vanished within an hour, similar to what I wrote above. Today, the story is different: the message is "Editing from 104.245.144.181 has been blocked (disabled) for the following reason(s): There are multiple blocks against your account and/or IP address. The longest block has been set to expire: 15:56, August 5, 2023. Your current IP address is 104.245.144.181. Relevant block IDs: #8790008, #9996173."

When I checked at https://nordvpn.com/what-is-my-ip/ , it confirmed that my IP today is 104.245.144.181, in fact. Note that this is different from the IP addresses I saw last weekend - I have no idea why this would change, but there you go.

So, I followed the directions provided, filed an unblock request via UTRS, and that was denied by administrator @Yamla:, who also advised me to send an email to checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org and plead my case there, which I did three hours ago. Fingers are crossed.

I understand the need to set blocks on IP addresses from time to time to fight vandalism, but something's wrong when an experienced editor like myself (I'm now over 200K total edits) can't get exempted from whatever's going on here. PKT(alk) 01:33, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nov 27th: I decided to shut this PC off last night and re-start it this morning, to see if a different IP address would be assigned, and it did change. It's now 99.254.21.146 according to https://nordvpn.com/what-is-my-ip/ , and apparently that's enough to restore my editing privileges. There's been no response from checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org yet, so I'll send them an update via email. Regards, PKT(alk) 13:32, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nov 28th: Blocked again. This time, https://nordvpn.com/what-is-my-ip/ says my IP is 139.28.218.246 (again, I have no idea why it changed), and there is apparently a block placed on 139.28.216.0/22. That IP "is believed to be a web host provider or colocation provider." I may have to reboot my PC later this morning to get a different IP address, unless the block expires soon. PKT(alk) 13:51, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

About 1 hour later, I posted an unblock request here. About 5 hours after that, I returned and found that I can edit again. Text of the unblock request was, "Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 139.28.218.246. PLEASE SEE THE ABOVE COMMENTS. I am a long-time editor, using the same PC I have used for years. The internet service in our house was upgraded and now I'm having these difficulties. It is my understanding that I was added to the 'ipblock-exempt' group back in February 2020. Please unblock me.... etc.. Here's the weird thing: nordvpn.com now tells me that my IP address is "99,254.21,146" - with commas (?????). Nordvpn also seems to think I understand Finnish! PKT(alk) 19:31, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey PKT, I just noticed this thread on your talk page. The most likely cause of your problems is your use of a VPN (this is an assumption, given your messages above). It appears that you're being rotated through a constantly changing stream of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and you're likely experiencing a block during one of these changes. Try checking your IP address every half hour or so for a day or two to see how often it changes, checking your access to WP as well. If WP is only checking IP addresses, then every time it changes you'll be caught in that net if that particular IP has malicious activity associated with it (MediaWiki ought to be changed to allow established users in good standing to bypass it). Also keep in mind that a VPN may maintain the same IP for you while changing what other hosts see as the origin of your request, possibly changing IP address with every HTTP request. Mindmatrix 22:23, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Mindmatrix: - Hello! Based on what I've learned this weekend, I agree with you. There have also been some "network reset detected" messages when I open this PC on occasion. My wife and I switched from Rogers Cable to Rogers Ignite, which was coincidental with these IP block issues. I'm going to call Rogers tomorrow to see if I can find out anything more from them. However, I thought that the 'ipblock-exempt' group would get around this sort of thing (?). Cheers!, PKT(alk) 23:17, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dec. 4: Well, this week I found that I was back in the cycle where I've been blocked for a while, but unblocked after an hour or so because something caused my IP address to change. It's currently 172.86.187.213. I didn't call Rogers about the issue this week, because work was busy. PKT(alk) 13:28, 4 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it's something to do with Rogers now - I think it's Kaspersky. I can edit again, and my IP address is now 99.254.21.146, which changed just after I got a notice from my Kaspersky software that I had reached a data limit. PKT(alk) 14:08, 4 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter edit

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.
