Old Ethereal move

edit

Hi there. I noticed you've been moving a few pages, and wanted to make you aware of the Manual of Style (MoS), specifically for naming articles. Peruse it at your leisure; in the meantime, I'll change some of your page moves to better reflect the MoS. Also, a disambiguation page can exist at "Title" instead of "Title (disambiguation)" if the various uses are of about equal notability, or there isn't one clear article that belongs at "Title". If you have any questions, leave them on my personal talk page, or here on your talk page. Mindmatrix 00:14, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

For clarification, is the current state of article names OK with you? If not, could you specify what you'd like to see? I was following the discussion of Wireshark/Ethereal since the fork was announced, so I think I have a decent handle of the situation (BTW: I'm in no way affiliated with either). Separate Ethereal / Wireshark articles?

edit

I see that you have taken a strong position that Wireshark is not Ethereal.

Personally, I think that there should be a separate Ethereal page with an expanded history of the Ethereal product, up to the point where Gerald left NIS and started Wireshark. The article should state that, and link to the Wireshark page.

The Wireshark page should be changed to state that Wireshark started life as Ethereal, briefly explain the change, link to the Ethereal page for more history, and then talk about Wireshark.

What do you think? BTW, full disclosure, I work for NIS. 8; 74s181 (talk) 15:00, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, now I feel the merge is good, since NIS doesn't seem to use the Ethereal name much, if at all, but there does need more talk about Ethereal. I haven't seen NIS do anything with the Ethereal trademark, seems kinda a waste to me however. Ozzy 98 (talk) 03:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
