Hey, Catherine! I like to type out my thoughts in detail, so this will be a little long as a result. But I wanted to give helpful feedback on the stuff you mentioned to me. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Wikipedia has a recommended structure for articles about surgeries/procedures. It lists the following sections: indications, contraindications, risks/complications, technique, post-operative recovery/rehab, history, society and culture, special populations.

You’ve already got a few of these sections underway, but it would be good to add and flesh out some additional sections. I added my thoughts by section below.

Indications

- Include other indications such as adrenal Cushing syndrome or primary aldosteronism

- Be sure to add source citations to this section

Contraindications

- Include severe coagulopathy and poor cardiopulmonary status for any technique, large tumor size and adrenocortical carcinoma for minimally invasive

Risks/complications

- Primary adrenal insufficiency (with symptoms), adrenal crisis (with symptoms), risk of infection/bleeding

- Be sure to add source citations to this section

Technique

- Don’t go step-by-step, but you can summarize the difference in technique between laparotomy vs minimally invasive

- I liked how you compared the outcomes between them

- Be sure to format the links so they appear as numbered citations

Post-operative recovery/rehabilitation

- Need for steroid supplementation, including stress dose

- General aspects and timeframe for rehab post-procedure

History

- When was the surgery invented (if known)

- Change in available techniques over time, change in preference for “gold standard” option

Society and culture

- Mention any legal or ethical issues, if any

Special populations

- Mention special considerations for children, pregnant women, or other patient populations when undergoing this procedure, if any

So in regard to the lead section, my understanding is that it should be a brief summary of the entire article. As a result, its length will vary depending on how many sections the main article has. I think your lead section’s first paragraph is a good summary of explaining the procedure and the gold standard. I also like how the second paragraph explains what the adrenal glands are. Personally, I’d recommend adding a couple sentences about indications and contraindications to the first paragraph. You could then add a third paragraph to touch on risks/complications, post-op recovery, and any special considerations.

Lastly, here’s a review on adrenalectomy that I found helpful (and maybe you would as well): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK559093/. It discusses most of these topics nicely.

Hopefully this helps, Catherine, and you’re welcome to reach out with any further questions. Best of luck! Drchancer (talk) 19:17, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
