Web Design Page(workings) [edit]Typography Typography within websites should either be a sans serif or serif typeface focusing on either but not both types appropriate to the style of website. Designing for type in websites should also be careful the amount of typefaces used, good design will incorporate a few similar typefaces rather than a range of type faces. As websites have specific safe fonts that most browsers will operate with, designers should use these fonts as much as possible to better control a website if it breaks down. The layout of a site should incorporate; good hierarchy relating to using titles and labels, good use of white space which will help break up the text into paragraphs and avoid centre aligned text. This all goes towards improving readability on a page. [1] [edit]Page Layout Web pages generally should be well laid out to improve navigation for the user. This would also mean for navigation purposes the sites layout should also remain consistent on different pages. [2] When constructing sites its important to consider page width as this is vital for aligning objects and in the design of layout. The most popular websites generally have a width close to 1024 pixels. Most pages are also centre aligned objects to look more aesthetically pleasing on larger screens.[3] [edit]Quality of Code When creating a site it is good practice to conform to standards. This includes errors in code as well as better layout for code. Making sure your IDs and classes are identified properly. This is usually done via a description of exactly what the element is doing. Not conforming to standards may not make a website unusable or error prone, standards can relate to the correct layout of pages for readability as well making sure coded elements are closed appropriately. When validating via W3C which can only be done when a correct DOCTYPE declaration is made. The system identifies what areas have errors and areas that do not conform to web design standards. This information can then be corrected by the user.[4] [edit]Visual Design When designing a website it is important to cater for you target market. This can be an age group or particular strand of culture thus the designer should understand the trends of the area of its audience. Websites should also understand the type of website they are so therefore a business website should not be designed the same as a social media site for example. As for the designer of a website, it is important to understand this can reflect something of the designer behind the works making it important that the design reflects the owner in a favourable light. The aesthetics of a site should not clash with the content or readability making sure that the user understands the navigation and can find the desired information, product etc. [5] [edit]User Experience Design For a user to understand a website they must be able to understand how the websites works. This is related to layout, clear instructions and labelling on a website. The user must understand how they can interact a site. In relation to continued use a user must perceive the usefulness of that website if they are to continue using it. With users who are skilled and well versed with website use, the influence relates directly to how they see how useful websites are which encourages further use. Thus users with less experience are less likely to see the advantage or usefulness of further use of websites.This in turn should focus design for a more universal use and ease of access to incorporate as many users as possible whether highly experienced or not.
