User:Richard Tennant and Royal Green Jackets Museum

Hi Nthep. I was going to post something more on this editor's talk page, but I see you've been helping him out there as well. Anyway, I do think that if Richard is connected to the museum (as a trustee), then he probably should be made aware of WP:COI. I added something about this to my MCQ post, but I'm not sure if he saw it. I don't want to barge in a bite him over this, but I think he should understand that that the museum has no right of ownership over the page. Maybe you can suggest a way to bring this up without discouraging him. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:30, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Hi, I haven't really looked at the history of the articles and was just dealing with the image issues. On a quick look it doesn't look like we are in WP:OWN territory, thankfully - some puffery perhaps which you appear to have taken care of - and a lack of sourcing for information about the material. Perhaps the approach needs to be "thanks for some good edits but we need to be careful about the language used; as someone involved with the museum it is too easy to inadvertently overpromote the places we like and are involved in" etc - so a gentle pointer to COI not the heavy boot. As he has edited someone else's autobiography it's obvious he can write and he will know his subject but just needs a deeper understanding of NPOV and how writing on WP is different from editing or writing a book. Nthep (talk) 09:44, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look. Your approach seems reasonable and as you say it's probably better to watch and wait than automatically assume the worst is going to happen. I did make a few tweaks to the article, so hopefully they will be seen as good faith attempts at improvement and not something else. FWIW, I do agree with what you wrote about the image gallery since many of them only seem to be indirectly related to the museum or its exhibits. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:02, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Discussion at Wikipedia:Teahouse#Pictures I've posted are being deleted

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia:Teahouse#Pictures I've posted are being deleted. You're probably the best person to explain the problem to the user since you're the one that noticed it. Gestrid (talk) 02:36, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Eve Dallas

Hey, thanks for that big revdel on Eve Dallas. I would have done it myself but because it was basically 95% of the page's edit history I wanted to have a second pair of eyes look and make sure I wasn't going overboard or misinterpreting Earwig's Detector or basically making a huge unconfirmed mistake. ♠PMC(talk) 22:28, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Not the first time had to revdel from the first revision. It's a problem with old articles that have escaped any checking over the years but your tagging looked right to me. Nthep (talk) 22:36, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

FlightGear

Hello Nthep. recently you reverted a addition under GPL which was considered above the threshold of originality. As I discussed with Crow, a stripped down version below the threshold of ORiginality is easily possibly. Could you please sent me the deleted material per email or on my userpage, so that I can work on base of this version, in which I invested already quite some time (ref formatting etc). cheers and thanks Shaddim (talk) 19:40, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Shaddim: I've got the content but you don't have email enabled to let me email it to you. As it's a copyvio I can't stick it on your userpage or any subpage as it's still a copyvio even when it's outside main article space. If you enable email and then email me I can send you the text file back. Nthep (talk) 20:29, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, I just noticed my email adress was never confirmed. Should work now. Thank you. Shaddim (talk) 22:59, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Kolkata Derby Page has again been edited in spite of the notice of Dispute

Hello, Kolkata_Derby, Wikieditor70 and Odafa has again edited the factual data of kolkata derby page in spite of the notice of dispute issued to the page. Kindly look into the matter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dasgupta.rony (talkcontribs) 05:43, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Yes and so what are any of you doing about addressing the concerns the others have raised. As far as I can see all everyone is doing is ignoring each other and doing there own thing. Nthep (talk) 16:35, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Re 1936 Great Britain Lions Tour

I got that from The Ashes (rugby league) page.

ok but what is the source? All the contemporary records I have looked at call the team England not Great Britain or the Lions. Nthep (talk) 01:30, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

File:User_Account_Control.png

Hello, you seemed to have reverted this image to a bot-reduced version.(File:User_Account_Control.png). I don't know if you noticed, but this version is unreadable. The bot ruined the image. Additionally, this image was uploaded with a reduced resolution from the original 4K screenshot. Can you fix it? Thank you. WikIan -(talk) 01:56, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

I you think the guideline at WP:IMAGERES isn't applicable or the alternative suggestions in reproducing the text don't work either then you should see about getting a consensus for a different resolution at Wikipedia:Files for discussion. Nthep (talk) 13:25, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

  • A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Wikipedia, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
  • Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

Kathryn Tappen

HI! Im editing Kathryn Tappens page as an authorized user for her. I understand there is a COI policy but do not understand how to work within in that. Please advise me how to do so that I can successfully post what Kathryn wants to her wiki page.

Margaret Rooney

@Mrooney2017intern: Kathryn doesn't own the page, it's about her, yes, but it's not hers to curate what is or isn't in it. As an encyclopedia article it needs to be neutral and compiled for sources independent of the subject. So while her NBC bio page is ok to use for very basic factual information e.g. how long she has worked at NBC, what programmes she hosts, it is not ok to use it for prose about her work. For that it needs to be content from elsewhere that isn't based on content generated by Kathryn. So if a newspaper has, for example, done an in-depth piece about Kathryn (not an interview with her) that would be a reliable, independent source that could be used. But none of this is a reason to quote verbatim the NBC piece. As C.Fred has said this material is copyrighted by NBC so without their explicit release of this material into the public domain (see WP:CONSENT on how this is done) any extensive use of it - in the way that you have done so far is a copyright violation.
I suggest that you limit your activity to finding reliable, independent sources about Kathryn and propose edits based on those sources at Talk:Kathryn Tappen leaving actual edits to the article to editors who have no involvement with Kathryn.
As a side issue the images you have uploaded have concerns too. Firstly as Kathryn is in them she obviously isn't the person who took the photos, so how is she the copyright holder? Copyright, unless there is some sort of contractual arrangement, belongs to the photographer, not the subject. Secondly, assuming the ownership is correct do you and Kathryn realise that under the terms of the licence you have used, anyone can use those images for any purpose (including commercial use), anywhere, and create altered images without further permission?
I do sympathise when interns are asked to make these kind of edits as you are placed in an invidious position but Wikipedia is not for promoting subjects solely in the way they would wish to be presented. Nthep (talk) 21:35, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

@nthep Can we communicate VIA email so that I can understand the rules and then learn how to appropriately post? mrooney@email.sc.edu — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrooney2017intern (talkcontribs) 21:44, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

@Mrooney2017intern: sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away. I don't think there is any necessity to deal with this by email. All the relevant policies are on Wikipedia to be studied and if you have specific questions feel free to ask for opinions from others. By doing this on Wikipedia rather than email, you may receive responses from a variety of people and not just one person's opinion. Nthep (talk) 18:59, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

@nthep Im having NBC email WIKI now so the rights can be released. WIKI suggests I also include you in the email to speed up the process. Is this correct?

@Mrooney2017intern: If NBC wish to licence the info that is their prerogative but everyone involved in this who is in any way connected with Kathryn needs to appreciate the conflict of interest and understand that subjects do not own the article about them. As long as this is understood and those involved act in accordance with the policy of conflict of interest then all is well. Unfortunately all I am foreseeing is another attempt to railroad Kathryn's preferred version in rather than a genuine attempt to update the article in a neutral, balanced and non-promotional way. 1946 Great Britain Lions tour

As an author of several tour articles myself, I just wanted to stop by and say what an excellently written and well sourced article 1946 Great Britain Lions tour is! Mattlore (talk) 20:38, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

@Mattlore: Thanks, the biggest disappointment is that the NZ newspapers of that time aren't yet digitized by National Library of New Zealand so I couldn't read the reports from a Kiwi perspective. I always prefer to use the contemporary sources if possible and rely on modern sources for context where appropriate but I'd really recommend Thomson's 2009 book if you haven't read it. Nthep (talk) 21:01, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
PS, glad to know NZ used sensible names like Stand-off. Nthep (talk) 21:06, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
Yes, it wasn't until the rise of interest in the NSWRL competition in the 1980s and 1990s that we became infected with the Australian lingo :) Mattlore (talk) 21:42, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
