Encyclopaedias, including Wikipedia, base their data on verifiable sources and ask that editors cite their sources, such as books, reputable newspapers, reliable websites, etc., We are becoming stricter about it and yes, you will find a lot of unsourced information but are trying to get editors to provide sources from the start in order to avoid the criticism that Wikipedia is an unreliable source of reference. Wikipedia does not allow, original research which unsourced edits essentially are, nor copyright violations where editors just cut and paste information from websites or books that are under copyright. So let us say that the information you added came from a book, then you would provide the title, author, publisher, page and isbn (if it has one). If you like, have a look at George Moore to see how references are done properly or consult this page for all the different citation tags available. Many of the links in the welcome message above will help you become a constructive and good editor. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 23:54, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
