Welcome! edit

Hello, Novickas, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Excellent job! edit

Hi, you are doing a truly excellent job! No need to apologize for anything (I am not even sure what are you apologizing for). We really badly need someone with native grasp of English. I myself make tons of mistakes and I would love if someone could clean it up. I set up the reference in the cuisine section. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. A little tip: to automatically sign your name just type 4 of these ~ (like this: ~~~~). If you need some help, just drop me a note, I will be happy to assist. I know that at first Wikipedia looks like a scary jungle of rules and policies, technical stuff and weird formating conventions. My talk page is here. See ya around! Shortages? edit

Hello! How are you? I noticed that you edited article Lithuanians with this particular sentence - Perhaps as a result of the shortages, the Lithuanians... - AFAIK Lithuanians do not suffer from any shortages or maybe I understand something wrongly? BTW, you have very nice copy/edit skills. M.K. 13:52, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for very quick answer. Yes indeed in soviet era were shortages. I initially thought that you talking about present times:). in this case, yes it would be better to add a note <during soviet era> M.K. 14:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC) P.S. More convenient place to leave the comments is user’s discussion page (second button on top) instead of the main one (first button).Reply
And maybe you also want to correct some mistakes here too>> Vilnius Castle Complex :D ?

Stubs edit

There are 3 ways to deal with red links:

  1. create a stub and hope someone will expand it
  2. point to external site
  3. do nothing and leave red link to someone else to take care of
  4. don't link anywhere, remove the [[ ]] and pretend there is no need for such article.

What to do really depends on your personal preferences. All are fine, but 1 and 3 are most common.

Stub is a short article that could and should be expanded. The whole long thing is on Wikipedia:Stub. Officially, there is no such thing as "sub-stub." There was a proposal a long time ago, but it died. I just like the idea of it and find it useful. It is a class of stubs that are extremely short (1-3 sentences). See also article grading scheme. Hope that answers, Renata 16:20, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, images. See, "Wikipedia-only" permison in not acceptable because Wikipedia is free (as in everybody can copy its content) and wants to remain such. So if you ask someone, you need to ask to release the image under GFDL, which means that anybody else can use the image for any purpose (note that "any" also includes commercial, and that stops most people). I don't have a lot of experience asking sites for permissions and I don't think there are any that granted "blanket" permissions, but what I gather is that most people don't really know copyrights and are quick to grant "Wikipedia-only." In short, it's quite messy. Easiest and cleanest way is to take pics yourself and release under some free license.

Quick tip: if you want to intent a para don't put a spece in front of

because it produces this ugly thing.

Instead, put :

Here is one,
Here are two,
And that's three

New small Copy/Edit ? edit

Hello! I am here again. I know it is not very nice to disturb people, but maybe you would be interested to look here too User:M.K/Laikinas? Welcome back! edit

Hello and welcome back from holydays, I hope you had a good time. While I have no specific task, but we have plenty of work in general :) As you know we run this project, here you could find the articles which needing copy/edit, expansion or request of new articles etc, so just pick up some articles by your taste and to work! M.K. 20:34, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, since you are looking for job, could you please take a look at my draft of History of Lithuania located here. I know that only about a third of the article is finished, but I would like to know that everything is fine with it. Also, if something is confusing unclear or looks irrelevant, let me know. I want the article to be as good as it gets :) Renata 00:52, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the question! That's because GDL reached the Black Sea after 1400, while the article deals with a bit earlier period. But I agree, it needs clarification. Anything else? Please be as picky as you can :) Renata 15:05, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I am really in no hurry, there is no chance I am going to finish it up till next weekend. Thanks for the notes. I know it needs more maps, pictures, timelines and all the other nice things. But that's for later, when the text will be finished. Also the lead will have to be adjusted quite a bit once the text is finalized.
The long coins are really long. And they are not really coins. That's just something people used in trade. Here is a pic.
As for the orders, it's really tedius to name them every time... But thanks again! You vocabularly is far more advanced than mine ;) Renata 21:12, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

for the edits of my text 'Aukstojas Hill'. A non-native speaker seldom realises how awkward he speaks/writes :) Juozas Rimas 05:52, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

For the Aukštėjas/Aukštojas issue see: http://ml.lms.lt/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=70&Itemid=61&limit=11&limitstart=0

I have little quotable geographic information on Aukštojas at hand right now. Its general orientation is south-east from Vilnius but it is by no means exact by compass. At the age of perhaps 9-10 years, I visited Juozapinė Hill as a member of the group of cyclists who went from the Cathedral Square in Vilnius to Juozapinė Hill. I was assigned the task of carrying some soil from the center of Vilnius (perhaps from the hill of the Gediminas Castle, I can't remember now) in a little decorated bag and spilling it at Juozapinė. As the then-unnamed-and-uknown Aukštojas is near Juozapinė, the overall picture was boring beige hills with little prominence. I'll perhaps do a cycling trip sometime to take the picture of Aukštojas just for the record.

BTW, what part of the US are you from? I spent a couple of weeks during my honeymoon this summer in Utah. Enjoyed every moment! Also visited Las Vegas, New York and northern Arizona. We two had a great roadtrip by car all by ourselves. I was particularly amazed by the real mountains that I saw for the first time in my life spent in the Lithuanian flatlands.Juozas Rimas 21:46, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Migūnai forestry and Aukštojas Hill: I have no information on the forestry, just took the information from http://www.miskai.lt/index.php?id=67. As far as I understand, all forests in Lithuania are divided into forestries "girininkijos" which are in turn divided into smaller units "eiguvos".Juozas Rimas 20:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE:The Big Picture edit

I am writing a bit different article, not for general Lithuanian history . But info which I use could be used in general Lit. history and vice versa too M.K. 15:23, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bigos edit

Sauerkraut is essential for Polish bigos. I'd expect it to be in Lithuanian bigos as well, as the "cuisine culture" is largely shared between the two nations. But let's leave it to Lithuanian editors to confirm or correct this. I'd be surprised to see bigos in "the West" (Western Europe or the US). I think its preparation recipe was actually against the EU regulations (because good bigos needs to be old and reheated many times). It's certainly a dish that you can order in any restaurant in Poland, but I've never met it in Lithuania. --Lysytalk 18:41, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lithuanian cuisine edit

Congratulations on Lithuanian cuisine. I've just read it and I believe your copyedit enriched it a lot. Yes, still there's room for improvement, I'm sure :-) --Lysytalk 20:24, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello! First about Lithuanian cuisine article, I suggest also adding kučiukai (or šlyžikai) also it is quite traditional some sort of desert :) , talking about borrowed dishes I missed – šašlykai which should be roasted on birchen woods. Besides the century (17) of potatoes, when were introduced in Lithuania, should be closely examined. About photo of honey Image:Runny hunny.jpg, sadly I do not have Lithuanian beehives, but you can request this photo in proper section of wikiprject Lithuania. About word biciuliai, yes this word is still used to describe the good friends. I remember that Valdas Adamkus received a beehives with bees from Viktor Yushchenko. About word numire – this word is most common when dealing with death, it also used to animals and humans; plus there is another word pastipo which is used to describe death of bigger animals like dogs, but this word is not used lets say for bees (personally I did not heard that anybody would say mano bites pastipo); there are few more words. Maybe numire should be translated as died? M.K. 19:17, 29 September 2006 (UTC) p.s. i have no wikistress at all :) but thanks for your concern.Reply

I have a pleasure to eat šašlykai last weekend:). Kučiukai is small pieces of roasted dough with the poppy seed. All these small roasted pieces are put into the grinded poppy seed mass, which water. Eating during the Kučios. these are Kuciukai M.K. 20:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey, did I hear a bit of nostalgia in your last sentence on mine talk? Yeah, it was in family sodas :) but with wine...this time. As I see you already figured about how to upload images; maybe these tutorials could help you in the future: Help:Contents/Images and media and as you see a bot made a notice that you forgot to add license (I fix it) , you also could familiarize with these: Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. cya M.K. 09:15, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Yes dektine is legal, no doubt about it. About images, it is quite difficult question, but I will try to find out how to deal with it, in particular case as yours. Yup, it would be great if more people could participate here! M.K. 16:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I reread and rethought issues regarding paintings and photos. And I think that then you have or own painting and by taking photo of it and uploading taken photo in wikipedia you should placed a tag some sort like PD-self with proper explanation in Source place. But this is only mine ideas, they could be wrong. M.K. 21:50, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Kuciukai.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kuciukai.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:07, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism warning edit

Hi, thanks for your help in cleaning up vandalism.

I know how frustrating and irritating it is when people vandalise our hard work, but please, I urge you to set your anger aside and take it easy on the newcomers.

I am referring to the warning that you left on this talk page. In my opinion, the edit was not serious enough to warrant a level 4 warning after only a single prior vandalism warning. I realise that the comment could have been a personal affront to you, but please do not take it personally. There are guidelines to how to deal with vandalism and I encourage you to follow these no matter how angry or affronted you may feel.

Also, unsigned messaged are considered rude. Please sign your message and date stamp it by adding four tildes (~~~~) after any message left on a user's talk page.

Once again, thanks for helping to keep Wikipedia vandalism free.

Regards LittleOldMe 10:59, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry if I did not follow the proper protocol for warning messages.
No need to apologise, you were operating in good faith
Does this protocol apply to all cases?
No, there are exceptions. In this instance, the worst warning I would use would be:
{{subst:blatantvandal}} ~~~~
You can use {{subst:test4im}} ~~~~ as a first warning "for extreme cases of vandalism". The tendency would be to class extreme vandalism as multiple edits to multiple articles which are designed to evade detection. The person would subtly change names, dates, add nonsense masquerading as facts, and perhaps delete some text. This type of edit is not easy to identify as vandalism and often goes undetected. When it is discovered we tend to check all the other recent contributions for that user or IP. If multiple instances of this type of vandalism is discovered then we would post a "This is the only warning you will receive!" message since it is obvious that it was a calculated act of vandalism.
Swearing and profanity are not classed as extreme vandalism, nor is it always blatant vandalism. Often, new users will read an article with which they strongly disagree and add comments to the article itself, sometimes expressing themselves in colourful language. In these instances we might not even warn them, instead we point them to the discussion page after reverting their edits. This is the way we "assume good faith". Only if the user persists and shows that they are intent on damaging the articles do we escalate to calling the edits vandalism.
Sometimes it's hard to wait for a bot to come along and fix it.
You don't have to wait for a bot to fix it, you are encouraged to fix vandalism when you find it. The bots are far from perfect and they often miss instances of vandalism that are not immediately obvious.

WP:LITH edit

Probably the best place to ask for images is WP:LITH, we have special section for request. Hope it helps. M.K. 17:37, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am not sleeping yet :) Likely Vilkmergė has a combination of two words: Vilkas (wolf) and Merga (+- girl) and we have Wolf`s girl, but the deeper linguistically research should be done to identified combinations properly. M.K. 19:04, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merge of Phantom Ranch edit

Great job on your merge of Phantom Ranch! I've been afraid to do it since I proposed it, and was happy to come home from work and see it done so well. Again, kudos! Notary137 02:13, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I got it to redirect properly now. The redirect statement redirected the article to itself. Not a problem.
I do have pictures of Phantom Ranch. I thought the existing pics in the article looked good, but I can find a couple of my best ones to compliment it. I will be down there again in January (camping), and I hope to get some good wintry-looking pictures before I freeze out there! I have read Death in Grand Canyon, though I waited some time before doing so (easily recognizing the irony of having the book in my car should something happen to me on one of my hikes, and so resisted buying it for more than a year.) However, I found it full of cautionary tales on what not to do while hiking in the Grand Canyon or other desert environments, so my apprehension was unnecessary. Notary137 19:30, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Funny that you mention about the picture type, see my note on the article's talk page. Since I'm going to be there in January, I can get a good photo from the Clear Creek Trail at Phantom Overlook when there is no foliage, so you can see all the buildings. Now I can't wait! Topo maps edit

I can add the link. I'll test it on a page later tonight (Hermit Trail) and see if it works. Notary137 17:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Added something neat to Hermit Trail. There was a template to use, {{geoscale-US-mountain}} which links to TopoZone, Google Maps, TerraServer, etc. Scale for TopoZone is not ideal for trails, so I'm thinking of adding a Template:geolinks-US-trails, changing the sacle to what is used on your link on Phantom Ranch. It looks like a rainy day tomorrow in Las Vegas, so I just might get it done! Notary137 00:22, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Created the template {{geolinks-US-trails}}, I mostly changed things like map size and scale. I already applied it to Hermit Trail and will move forward with others. We're getting a lot of rain down here this morning... Notary137 16:39, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

You are not thinking of leaving, are you? I noticed you removed yourself from the Portal:Lithuania guestbook... Wonder why and if you are ok... Renata 23:39, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, maybe not entirely but thanks for your concern. I can see that I've been spoiled by my boss, husband, friends, and children, to the point where it's a shock to not get cooperation, thanks, hugs, etc. These things are not forthcoming in Wikipedia - it's just not a very warm place. There are other paths to "žmonių gėrybei" that are probably better suited to me. But planning to finish up a few more items. Sincerely, Novickas 16:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Agh, yeah, I know what you are talking about. Yes, WP is a very cold and lonely place. If you work hard and write good articles, no one will thank or even notice you. If you mess up something, you will be screemed at. If you troll and vandalize, you will get all the attention you want. Anyhow, it was good to have you here, thanks for all your help, and I hope "neminėsit blogu žodžiu." A month ago I would have said: "Oh no! Don't go, you are needed here." Today I say: "Run! Before it's not too late." Renata 17:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please, don`t leave! M.K. 19:12, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks guys. If you want me to edit something I would be happy to do so. Novickas 15:36, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

It's ok to chat. I need to do that more often myself :) I printed out the Jungle, maybe I'll read it - first few pages seem hard to follow though. I found about it like a year ago when one of my classmates was studying it for the English class. I was so surprised! Somehow no one talks about it in Lithuania.

On evolution. You should have met me before I came to the U.S. I am completely new person now. On WP, you should have met me before the PL-LT wars started. I was a lot friendlier and nicer back then. Now I feel like a grumpy old lady :) WP is a very hostile place to live in. So many strangers, so many rude people, so many upset people. Add different cultures, education, and opinions, mix in nationalities and bake it in the oven of very limited communication (no face-to-face interaction) and sprinkle with personal issues and you'll get a nice pie called WP community. But for whatever reason (still don't understand myself) that pie is very addictive...

A bright future, you say? Hm, that'd be good. Can I order two to go and do you accept credit cards? :) I don't really know how you came to that conclusion, but hey, thanks. Renata 23:44, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mind if I pop in here, uninvited ? About the WP community and POV conflicts. It's an eye-opener for me, but you really need a good perspective to appreciate this. After the initial shock, you start to realize, that the conflicting points of view can be often equally justified. One can learn a lot more than from books, all the TV/news crap or even the educated chats with your friends. One has only to often remind oneself that the backgrounds and cultures are different and people can act differently. If only there were less aggression ... Cheers. --Lysytalk 18:21, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

A request edit

Hello,

if you remember, we have had some brief communication on Lithuanian geography. I also noticed you have in some cases proof-read wiki articles related to Lithuania. When you have some spare time, could you take a look at the page on Žirmūnai, my native borough in Vilnius? I co-authored it to make it the most extensive article on Vilnius' boroughs. I know it's weird the article on the Old Town is now smaller :)

The page is pretty clean of spelling mistakes, but I bet there are tons of incorrect articles ;) Juozas Rimas 20:30, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

By the way, regarding the Žirmūnai article, is there a more suitable word in English instead of "ferry" to convey the idea of the ships cruising in the small Neris River. You can see the ship in one of the photos on the page. "Ferry" sounds like a huge bulky barge which transports people and cars over a big body of water, whereas the ships in Neris are old, relatively small Soviet "cruise" river ships that go to and fro in the river with passengers only. I used the term "motor ship" but I bet it sounded weird, perhaps like jet-ski? :)

Hello! When you have some spare time, please drop by the Žirmūnai article which has been consirably supplemented and could benefit gretaly from your English-check. ;) Juozas Rimas 16:58, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the check of Žirmūnai! I have edited some places where the meaning was distorted a bit. I've also had added a new paragraph on an obscure Soviet-time pontoon-bridge tragedy. Juozas Rimas 07:37, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello! After some more expansion, we are approaching satiation with the Žirmūnai :) I've also hashed up a short lead section. Your copy-edit would be very welcome, especially for the lead. Juozas Rimas 12:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, you did a great job on the Žirmūnai article! However, I had to remove the bit from the Age Cohorts which implied that Russians live shorter in Lithuania than Lithuanians - do we have such information? (WHO statistics are on Russia, as a country). I'm also not sure about the attractiveness of Žirmūnai to retirees. From my everyday observations, the high average age comes due to the people who came to live here in the 1960s being very settled. But today, when appartments in Žirmūnai are expensive, many retirees actually sell their appartments and go to a cheaper place to live. What do you think? Juozas Rimas 16:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the crime rates are even lower now (2006 data) - a 24-percent decline. I'll add the info tomorrow, together with the crime types breakdown. Juozas Rimas 22:49, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, when you have time, for the sake of completeness, you could return the interesting figures on the crime rates in the US and Canada to Žirmūnai article. I have just updated the crime statistics, fixing my mistakes. The rate is not 20, but close to 50... I hope I'm not mistaken again. I'm not strong at maths :) Make sure you adjust the US figures down to "per 1,000 residents", because I saw they were given on the "per 100,000 residents" scale. Argh, sorry for getting back so late. I am really not sure what you are talking about with those south-noth arrows. I don't think I have seen them. You should take screenshot next time, I would be able to tell much more. As for game - there was a similar game somewhere on WP, long ago, can't find a link. Hello! Some time pasted from your last note, it is good to see that you still with us. Sadly, but there is no public domain Governmental sites in Lithuania, IFAIK. Hello! Sorry for delay to answering to your question and request I will take deep look at article tomorrow eee...today but only in morning  :) I am veeeery busy these days, so mine participation is a bit halted now. Cya soon! M.K. 01:03, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hello again! I read your article and have few suggestion: firstly it would be worth to note about six angle cross, for instance it is used it Order of Vytis: Image:Cross_of_Vytis.jpg, also six angle cross is the symbol of Lithuanian military. In text it is mentioned that Vytis is used and in coins, maybe it worth to place a picture of these coins. Maybe also references should be harmonized a bit, but this is not very important. M.K. 16:11, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vilnius.lt edit

Hi, sorry for late reply and not being able to work on the symbols. I have tons of things to do in real tife.... Vilnius.lt loads perfectly fine. It's slow, but works. I don't have a clue what might be wrong with your computer... Renata 16:46, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Article size edit

No, there is no way to count the characters. That message is just a notice that the article might be a bit too long. There is this ancient limit of 32kb that gets ignored all the time, but if the page gets way too long (like 100+kb) then it might be a problem with GA of FA nomination. Hi, please edit Vilnius in here because no one knows how long it's gonna take to bring Vilnius to a more presentable format and no one wants the world to see the dirty kitchen :)

As an answer to your request of an audio recording on the portal. You can find one here [1] (not sure if the quality is good enough for you). From the same site I got the french traduction I used to update fr:Tautiška giesmė and was planning to add the audio file. But I am a newby with wikipedia and I still didn't investigate how to create the ogg file. I've already asked and got authorisation from the owner of the blog Gilles/Dzilis to use the audio file. Lituanica etc edit

Hello, 2 or 3 signatories a day? Wow, you are ambitious :) If seriously, I have the book at home (bought through eBay - you can find interesting stuff there). But carrying all that home, wow, you are ambitious ;) So I don't have any special requests...

As for your technical questions, Kaunas botanical garden needs to be moved/renamed. Go to the article and click on the move tab (between "history" and "watch" tabs atop of an article), type in a new name (this time with the capitals) and click ok. As for Kęstutis Nakas you need to create a redirect. Go to Kestutis Nakas and type in #REDIRECT[[Kęstutis Nakas]]. Note that # is neccesary; if you change what's in between the brackets, it will redirect to a different page. Click save, and you are done. Lesson finished :) Renata 02:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've heard that you're going to fill all the Signees of act of independance, so please, do not create article on Jonas Vileišis - I recently began translation on him from lt wikipedia, and haven't finshed yet. Tenses edit

Even though you did not ask me, "būna" is a present tense. Būti (infinitive) - būna (present) - buvo and būdavo (past) - bus (future). Is just that people usually say "yra" is something is present right here and right now. I think it's similar to English present tense in "festivals happen every now and then." Labas rytas!!!!Thanks for encouragement! About sentence in question, maybe I translated badly but this is original:

Article Lithuanian nationality law edit

Thanks for the article Lithuanian nationality law. Unfortunately the law isn't really clear on the matter of possibility or restriction to get dual nationality. I heard also that the law is again been discussed in the seima thus the application of the existing one is put on hold. Perhaps you can confirm that. I should say that I have a direct interest here as we want to get the Lithuanian citizenship for our daughter who get already the French one at birth. Why did you remove the Latin expression Jus sanguinis? Is there restriction on the use of such common Latin sentence in WK? For me at least Jus sanguinis is much more explicit (cf french expression droit du sang) Jmnil 11:18, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Big mamma is here again :) In short, original texts do not belong on WP articles, they belong on Wikisource (if they are in the public domain). WP articles should be about that text but not the text itself. So the law has to go... Renata 12:37, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unsuccessful RFA (Request for arbitration, not request for adminship) edit

I'm truly sorry to find that intellectual honesty and honor are not concepts that Wikipedia recognizes.[2] However, since these concepts are alive and well in universities, research institutions, the US military, and elsewhere, I have faith that they will eventually be recognized here as well. Novickas 14:22, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

The sooner you understand how the reasoning of those who were the objects of your RFA operates, the less dissapointed you will be. If J.L. had moved to Kaunas in the 1920's, had composed the Lithuanian National Anthem, and had written his Last Will and Testament in prefect Lithuanian, you still would have been told he was born in Poland and was Polish. Now he can rest in peace in the English Wikipedia as being born in "Poland" (at the time Russia) and is both a Pole and a "Russian" to boot. But as always, during these discussions you can count on a few pearls being relayed during their arguments. Here are two of my favorites: the first from the response at your RFA, where the commentator "not wanting to create too much bad blood between Polish and Lithuanian editors" says speaking of the Lithuanian wikicommunity ....that it seems to be a tad touchy when it comes to Polish-Lithuanian relations and people born in Vilna in the times when the town was not yet a part of Lithuania... Not yet a part of Lithuania? Saving the best for last, you might remember this one from the J.L. talk page...I'm beginning to think that the small Lithuanian club on Wikipedia has some serious problem with understanding that not everyone who was ever born in Poland is Lithuanian by default. I hope I got you to smile, it got me to laugh. Oh, and BTW thanks for giving us all an insight on how they count google hits too. Dr. Dan 16:22, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, like Bertie Wooster, I "emitted a hollow l.", if that counts. Novickas 17:06, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Almost forgot, Happy International Woman's Day to you, and any of my friends on Wikipedia who catch this tidbit. And although one of your "opponents" in the RFA pretended to not be aware of your gender (after months of your participation on WP, and a nice "User Page" pretty much "giving it up" ), I'll assume good faith and chalk it up to his same inability to distinguish that Vilnius is not in Poland. I'd wish them both a "Happy Woman's Day" too, but they'd probably whine that I'm being uncivil to them and their parents again. Dr. Dan 22:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, doc. Now that I look at my talk page it does kind of say Kinder, Küche, Kirche. Oh well. Novickas 00:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Please read WP:DR. RfArb should be the last, not the first, attempt to resolve a dispute.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  22:41, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You forgot WP:RFC. Also, bad faith issues are covered by WP:AGF, alas, the faction which advocates ignoring any WP:CIV-related offences (and which shut down WP:PAIN and WP:RFI recently) has effectivly succeeded in making dealing with any related issues much more difficult.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  04:48, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I notice that you are signing your messages by typing your name in the end. You can instead just type four tildes like this: ~~~~ and wiki-software would convert that into the name+date stamp just like this:
Irpen 01:33, 21 March 2007 (UTC).Reply
If you enter three tildes "~~~" that would be turned into just the name like this
Irpen.
Finally five tildes "~~~~" produce the datestamp with no name like this
"01:33, 21 March 2007 (UTC)".
Happy edits. --Irpen 01:33, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The main page of polonica.net, which I just checked for the first time, is indeed disturbing, and I certainly agree it would be preferable not to use any materials published by it - however the question is, was the article about Piłsudski published (solely) by it, or did this website simply chose to reprint an article found elsewhere on the web? In that second case we should it would not make the article unreliable (if an extremist website copies and reproduces reliable content, it doesn't make the content less reliable). Based on the information here (the site, related to Polish Ministry of Education, seems rather reliable), this article was first published on another website (now 404); its Polish translation (or original) is also reproduced for example here (I don't see anything controversial about that site). Nonetheless I have replaced most of the refs to this article with more reliable refs, to be on the safe side; if you think any fact in Wikipedia referenced to that website is dubious or not-neutral, feel free to tag it as such in the article and raise the issue on talk. Bottom line is that certainly, polonica.net portal, by itself, seems as unreliable as Vilnija stuff, and we should be very careful about using anything associated with such sources.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  15:14, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:Copyedit edit

Hello, nice to see you. Thanks for the links, yes they are about the same watchdog. Regarding copyedit, currently I have in mind this one. It is only the draft, needs expansion, proper headline names, spelling etc. maybe you will have some suggestions. M.K. 17:05, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey, so nice you are back! :) Now so that you could not run away again, could you please work your magic on House of Gediminas? Thanks. Renata 04:34, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much. Both, for the copy-edit (as I said, magic...) and the cartoon (I really like this one). After re-reading the article I found some of my own mistakes :( ... BTW, individual years should not be wiki-linked. Also, the comma in dates like January 1 2007 is not necessary as the software will do it for you. Off to bed. Renata 05:37, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes please, if you want you can nominate it, no problem. Just then article is properly written ask Renata to move it from sandbox to proper place, as it needs admin skills. Another point, we have to think about the proper name of the article too. Cheers, M.K. 20:51, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello. This one too has potential for DYK, if expanded a bit + corrected grammar. What do you think? M.K. 14:57, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for copy edit. Now as Signatories are in main space you can nominate it for DYK. M.K. 16:21, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Magna Carta & other edit

Hi, I have nominated the house to GA (it still lacked a para on Kęstutis), but now I think it's good enough for FA. As for your question, the text is copyrighted (unless you can find anything that explicitly says otherwise) and cannot be included either here on Wikipedia or there on Wikisource. But you can definitely quote from there. Renata 15:59, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I read the article and I completely agree with the notes left on Talk:Cheddar Gorge and Caves. I know this article can be so much better. The prose is choppy (look who's talking :), reads like a tourist broshure, most information is trivial and the real substence is just touched upon (like the cave description is just 6 sentences). So I would fail the article and send it for a complete re-write (yeah, I am that cruel :), because I don't think it's salvageable by couple edits. Renata 21:47, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your recent edits edit

Hi, there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot 17:10, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Submited a complain on your behalf here. Hope you don't mind. Renata 17:35, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Seems there is an actual policy that a signature must contain a link so they won't fix the bot. If you ask me, none of their business. But you can get rid of the bot by opting out. There is a category that you need to add to your userpage. Renata 17:05, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pyemotes herfsi edit

Thanks! Looks better now! Still reads rather odd for an article about a European native species to be in American English; might be best (per the Wiki MOS) to avoid words with spelling differences (favor/favour, paralyze/paralyse, etc.). It also needs a couple of formatting changes; scientific names should be in italics with the genus name capitalised and the species name in lower case, e.g.: Grapholita molesta (which also has a typo!) - MPF 18:34, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, feminism sounds good for DYK hook. Somehow Lithuanians were really into democracy: every document that said we want independence also said the state should be democratic. I wonder how did that happen... In the meantime, I am planning on the press ban article. Just which title do you prefer: Lithuanian press ban or Ban of Lithuanian press? Or maybe something else? Renata 17:15, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
See, language itself was not banned. You could write and print any books you wanted to as long as you did not use Latin alphabet (had to use cyrilics). So then Ban on the Lithuanian press? (is "the" needed?) :) Renata 18:01, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lithuanian National Prize edit

The short name of the prize is - Lithuanian national prize, although full version might be mentioned in the lead. As for the Recipients of the Lithuanian National Prize I can move it there just now, but we must agree whether it is the title we should use, to make it last one move. I started it as a stub for a single purpose, i thought it is needed, and is something to be proud of. I'm waiting your comments.--Lokyz 16:28, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The prize is awarded rather than won, but it's may be just my native Lithuanian language connotations. And I do not think, there is another National Prize in Lithuania (to be used as this short name)- NACIONALINĖS PAŽANGOS PREMIJA is another thing - and is translated as National Adwancement Prize.--Lokyz 16:50, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Britannica edit

Since we cite better quality sources, I think we can remove the Britannica entry ([4]). If you want to keep it, could you add the author to it? The "better" Britannica quotes are attributed to reliable authors; the anonomious ones we can really do well without. On another note, I think we could safely remove all quotations that are in the article - or rather, move them to Wikiquote. Perhaps we could add a few quotations to the article - like in William Shakespeare article - but those should be reasonably neutral. I certainly don't think we should encourage addition of controversial quotations just so one side or the other can 'sneak' a statement that would never made it through NPOV/UNDUE/WEASEL.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  19:31, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Some remarks edit

During this weekend I spent some time reading classics. For upcoming days i planing to review and select some modern works, but having problems with selection. In one hand I was intrigued by BBC news report regarding Doris Lessing and her quite rough answers, but I am not sure if it worth to start reading her works. Maybe you read some of her works? In short, could you recommend any truly worthy modern works to read? Thanks, M.K. 09:09, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments, I will definitely look in your suggestions. Regarding Lessing, probably every reader have to draw conclusion about her feminism if any. Perhaps it is another argument to investigate her works more closely. You have mentioned Animal Farm and I just remembered interview with Venclova. What an irony of life - son of Soviet establishment and most fierce critic of this system. And his words are gold value: Esu lietuvis, niekuo kitu negaliu ir nenorėčiau būti. M.K. 10:33, 30 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
If I understand you correctly you have face to face contact with Venclova? If this is so, it would be great to have access to his family photo archive (a very great one!) and perhaps use some photos (Joseph Brodsky, Milosz with him) here in WP. M.K. 21:36, 31 October 2007 (UTC) P.S. oh, and one more thing, could you give ce to this one?Reply

NYT edit

I used databases that I have access to thru my college's library. And it's actually a pretty cool source - while I always have to be careful about their accuracy (as they describe events that just happened or are about to happen), the articles are rather balanced and focussed more on factual information. They also discuss international situation a lot, gives good sense who the events were viewed at the time, and provides some interesting details. I am also impressed by accuracy - even long Lithuanian names are spelled correctly and interpretations of events pretty much the same as in books written fifty years later with the benefit of the hindsight. The only drawback is that it takes forever to research it... Last night's edit took me almost 6 hours!

Would you care to do your magic trick of copyediting? I finished writing it at 3am so I imagine my English in places must be extra bad. Thank you! Renata (talk) 15:55, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photos edit

I would suggest looking at the List of Chicago Landmarks many articles need photos and many articles might be easier to create with photos. At some point, I hope to get photos of the Kenwood District and North Kenwood District, but do not know the proper points of interest. I would suggest trying to identify points of interest in the Chicago Landmark districts in the area you want to explore. I think around 63 the Jackson Park Highlands District may need some photos, but again, I do not know the points of interest that make this a landmark district.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:31, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Depending on how far south you want to go things like William W. Powers State Recreation Area could use some photos. All the southeast community areas could use photos. I think the highest priority would be the Pullman District within the Pullman community area. All southeast community areas from #42-#55 have one or fewer photos. So they could use some help. Good luck.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 00:08, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok, great, I moved the article already. WP was ridiculed for at least two years for using "lagoon"... Anyway, since you proved to be such an expert on lakes, can you help me with something else? I wrote Lakes of Lithuania a looooong time ago. Birds:) edit

Ah the Lithuanian poetic name "paukščiukai", like the birds sitting on the trees (or letters). Just a note - in Latin, internationally recognized as scholar language they're called Diacritics. And please accept my personal thanks for fixing birds. Cheers;)--Lokyz (talk) 12:59, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

But it's so much nicer than diacritic, such a harsh word. Don't worry, I won't use "birds" in an article, I figured it wouldn't matter in an edit summary. On the other hand, in our family we always refer to the dot over the ė as a musė, much less poetic. Best, Novickas (talk) 13:14, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

T-V edit

Gosh. The Lithuanian language is soooo complicated...

Tu - is used to address someone who is a close friend, relative, and rather familiar expression. In most cases it does not use name and can be regarded as fignerpointing. In this cas eperson is addressed given name and first person daryti-darai-darote.

Jūs - has some flavour of the status: it is not uncommon to address mother and father (rather old tradition - for example my sister did address our parents Jūs (and sometimes, when speaking to mom she did not use Jūs, and addressed her mama, using first person addressing), I did Tu(it was reversed when it came to autoritah things), but more common it is to use as a respectfull form addressing people older than yoorself, people with social status. And it is addressing to a third person (two heads for siplification: daryti-darai-darote) This distinction can be easily transformed into informal language by the one who's been addressed. Popular forms are - please, don't grow my second head, get easy, my name is * and others. Jūs is mostly followed by surname.

Hence i should address You as Jūs, Novickas.

There is some form "Pats" roughly translated as "You, the one who has ownership, and therefore is independent and sovereighn" - it's formal addressing into someone you do respect, and he told you to get easy, and you can use name, just TU would get too familiar, and breake certain barrier of friendly/famliarity.

There is aslo older form of pats used only in shcools 'Tamsta, derivative from Tavo mylista.

I think for now I'll not go into political usage of the mix of various forms of these addressing formats.

It is not such a complicated as Japanese personal addressing forms, but one from outside not so easily comprehensible. hope this helps, sorry for my broken English.--Lokyz (talk) 14:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I hope you would find some use of my thoughts and transfer it into the appropriate article.--Lokyz (talk) 14:24, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I've told earlier - it's rather complicated.
Yes there is a verb "tujinti" - it means a disrespectfull bahaviour, i.e. familiarity. To come and address one you do not know as a oldtime fellow. And there are some situations where one is left without epaulet. It's and idiom, not sure whether local Lithianian or Polish, Russian or German... if one is naked (like in the Sauna) they are all as the mother (Eve) let them be, hence equal. While the epaulets are on again situation changes. One might think about it as some sort of Dionisian festival.
Jūs'inimas is slowly going away, but it the non-usage of Jūs still does annoy people, roughly from 30 years on. And people with status. On the other hand I do not feel well if people even 3 or 4 years older than I'm address me Jūs and/or third person. The same goes for my Goddaughter and her brother (my sister's children)- once upon a time their father forced them to call me Jūs, and I do get schizophrenic when she calls me Tu, and he Jūs. Gosh.--Lokyz (talk) 14:48, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Globalization (with international business culture) and Americanisation (TV series) is taking some part in it also.--Lokyz (talk) 14:54, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Klaipėda Geothermal Demonstration Plant edit

It is very good. I made only some formatting. Propose to nominate also for the main page DYK. I will add also to the next pool of the Energy Portal DYK.Beagel (talk) 16:55, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agree, article is good - thank you! The past tense confused me. I assumed that the plant was closed and because the article did not say why it was closed, I tried to look it up. What I came up was not entirely clear, but the plant almost went bankrupt last year, but the government bailed it out. It seems it is still under construction/repairs and will reopen later this year. So I think it should be "is" and not "was". Renata (talk) 21:52, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Everything looks good. « D. Trebbien (talk) 01:29 2008 May 5 (UTC)

Let me humble request to lend your great copyediting skills at Lithuanian National Prize, a new stub of mine. Thanks in advance.--Lokyz (talk) 10:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I't is awarded in Presidential Palace, Vilnius by president himself. There was an exceptoon this year, as the ceremony was held not on Feburary 16th, but earlier (Feburary 12th I think [9], Febrary 15th in 2007 [10]).
As for group of artists - Recipients_of_the_Lithuanian_National_Prize#2004 in 2004 laureate was a string quartet, 19ū9 also string quartet, 1999 piano duo, last year - artists duo.
Until 2003 there was no President institution in Lithuania. I'm mot sure, wheter president was always present since then.
just a suggestion - maybe we clud make a DYK from this article?--Lokyz (talk) 16:31, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
