Chalk Maple

edit

Are you sure that's a Chalk Maple? IMO it looks more like a Red Maple (which also grows in that part of Florida). There are some pictures of the leaves here, and most of them look different from your picture. I may be wrong however - some of them do look rather similar to yours. --Schzmo 19:01, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, if the bark looks like that, you probably are right. Do you know the flower color? If they're red, it's a Red Maple; if they're green/yellow, then it most likely is a Chalk Maple. --Schzmo 19:24, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I was just about to make the same note! The pic is unfortunately Red Maple, not Chalk Maple (which is very closely related to, and barely distinguishable from, Sugar Maple). As a PS - "Image compressed by 60% to save Wikipedia space" - this isn't necessary, space is not a problem, it is better to upload the full resolution. - MPF 21:33, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Follow-up ... saw the notes on Schzmo's talk page; on comparing the leaf shape with other photos, the character to look for is not how pointed the leaf is (this is variable), but how many serrations there are on the sides of the lobes; Chalk Maple (as in the Duke.edu pic) has just one or two teeth on the side, whereas Red Maple, and your scan, shows several small teeth. Sorry, it is definitely Red Maple! - MPF 21:39, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I reckon it is worth re-uploading the pic with a new name, as we don't have a decent Red Maple leaf pic (see commons:Acer rubrum, which is the best place to put pics so they can be used on all the other wikipedias as well) - MPF 21:48, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
On pic size - generally, people with dial-up etc will only look at the thumbnails in the page; the full-size pic can be a megabyte or five without affecting this, so large image files aren't a problem (that's one of the nice things about wikipedia!) - MPF 22:50, 19 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi again! - it does; if you click on a pic, unless the pic is small, you'll find the pic on the image description page is still reduced, with a clickable line under the pic which says "Download high resolution version (2848x2136, 1537 KB)" (or whatever the full size of the pic is). You can set yourself what size image the image description page shows; go to "my preferences" (link next to your talk page link), go to "Files", and there you'll be offered a drop-down box "Limit images on image description pages to:", with the default setting at 800×600px, but you can set it as low as 320×240px if you want to; this will allow you to see pics at a much lower resolution and kilobytage. Hope this helps! - MPF 20:59, 20 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's a good article. I added two images a postcard and a drawing for interest OK?... surely there needs to be an image for the upcoming rebirth. I also added one single line saying: "The Florida State Capital now stands where this waterfall and pond once were." As for being an expert? I'm really only interested in Leon Co. and surounding counties and towns. I just get curious about things and then look for photos at the Florida Photographic Collection then Google that subject or information within the description to see if I can get more. There's so much more to do. What else have you seen that I've created? I'd be interested. "Go Noles!" -Chuck, Noles1984 14:33, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School

edit

Hello! You have restored the National Geographic video cover with Jane Goodall's picture on it i the article on Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School. Unfortunately this is directly against the fair use policy (see counterexaple # 9). Also, the copyright tag leaves no room for interpretation, saying "It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of videotape covers to illustrate the videotape in question qualifies as fair use". I will remove the image again. Please don't put it back. Dr Zak 16:08, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Doak Campbell Stadium.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. Commonwealth Cup (Virginia)

edit

I nominated this article for deletion not because the content was bad, but because it was redundant to the Commonwealth Cup page. I moved a bit of the information over there, but enately they are the same. Jazznutuva 10:25, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nominatng was a good move. I incorporated the style of info box or table found on previous Commonwealth page which I think looks cleaner, just my opinion. Adjusted the title color to white since it was somewhat hidden in the grey (black text). Moved the photo up.

Question do you know how the template for UVA (Commonwealth Cup) and Jefferson-Eppes Trophy article/page bottom) is done. That's a mystery and I'd like to create one for FSU. Thanks. Noles1984 16:12, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Sure... it took me a while to figure this out too... I actually created the UVA one... follow this link {{University of Virginia}}... to add this template to the page you just simply add {{University of Virginia}} to the bottom of the page but it's only a template. If you have any other questions check out Help:Template or write me back... I'll gone for a few days, but I'll answer as soon as I get back. Jazznutuva 22:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here's what happended: The FPC used a dubious copyright notice that made it sound like the FPC owned the copyright to the image. They don't necessarily. Non-free use disputed for Image:Goodwood Plantation rc04488.jpg

  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Goodwood Plantation rc04488.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 16:20, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image

edit

Hmm, I hadn't known about that Florida stuff. This image, at any rate, should be okay to keep on fair use grounds, since according the article, it's from before the mansion was remodeled. I would simply delete that Florida boilerplate and just put a standard fair-use justification on there, adding that the house no longer exists in that form so the image cannot be replaced. That should satisfy BetacommandBot. —Chowbok 15:43, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

I'm still getting notices from User:BetacommandBot about rationale even though the below tag is placed on the image and discussion pages. Example: Image:Goodwood Plantation rc04488.jpg. As you probably know, the Florida Memory Project template was discarded leaving many images either deleted or with notices.

Digital Image Information

This is a one of a kind unique digital image from The Florida Memory Project, Florida Department of State. It holds the archives' number of: 0000000. This image is needed to enhance and improve this article and no other representation exists.

Use: The use of photographs and other materials in the custody of the State Archives of Florida is governed by state law and, in some cases, by the terms of the donation agreement under which the Archives acquired the images. In accordance with the provisions of Section 257.35(6), Florida Statutes, "Any use or reproduction of material deposited with the Florida Photographic Collection shall be allowed pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (1)(b) and subsection (4), provided that appropriate credit for its use is given." Please contact the Archives if you have any questions regarding the credit and use of any material.

What can be done? Need help from an administator. Go Horns, no Gators need apply. Noles1984 15:42, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The problem is that BetacommandBot is just that — a bot — so it doesn't have the ability to recognize every permutation of a fair use rationale automatically. AmiDaniel's addition ought to work, though it's spelled "rationale," not "rational."
That aside, there are a lot of things wrong with the tagging on that image. The source isn't necessarily correct; the Florida Photographic Collection is simply an archive of many images. This does not mean that they own the copyright to the images. If you look at the photo with call number #fa2986, for example, you'll see that there's an author listed. He or she is the actual image source; not the Florida Photographic Collection.
Next, that's not a particularly strong fair use rationale in the first place. Before uploading fair use images, carefully read Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Policy; all ten of these must be met; not nine, not eight, but all ten. Then, go to Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline#Necessary components. Does you fair use rationale answer all of the questions (again, not some of the questions) in some detail? The phrase "needed to enhance and improve this article" is vague, and "no other representation exists" is sometimes questionable, so using this rationale as a blanket template for all Florida Photographic Collection images is a no-go.
We then come to the fair use tag itself. You've used the "unique historic image" tag, which as far as I can tell, is blatantly wrong. The subject of the image is unique and historic; the image itself isn't. This tag is misused more often than not, so let me explain. Image:The Falling Man.jpg is a "unique historic image;" most other photographs of the Sept. 11 attacks are not. Image:Photo 51.jpg is a "unique historic image;" most other DNA images from journals and the like are not. Image:Famousphotoche.jpg is a "unique historic image;" other non-free copyrighted photos of him are not. The image must be unique — not the subject — and we have to prove that it's unique; see my fair use rationale at Image:Kent State massacre.jpg.
Finally, there's one small remaining issue. The resolution of the image is quite high, which is unnecessary considering how its displayed in the corresponding article.
But, wait! Read the publication date of this photo more closely: "Publication info: ca. 1911." If the work is published before 1909, it is public domain in the U.S., but that's not helpful. However, if the work was published before 1923, it is in the public domain in the U.S., given that it wasn't an unpublished work. It is considered an unpublished work if it didn't have a copyright notice at that time, or if it was published through 1922 in a language other than English. Given that there's a publication date, it is certainly feasible that the image is in the public domain. But, we have the clause that all works published before 1978 go into the public domain 95 years after publication, which would be ca. 2006. I think it's reasonable to claim this image as in the public domain.
As a result, all of this fair use business (for this image only!) is unnecessary and can be removed. I would use the {{PD-US}} image tag, but do not forget that even though it's a free image, it must still be well-sourced.

Unspecified source for Image:Burt_Reynolds_pr07242.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Burt_Reynolds_pr07242.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:25, 22 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Shell babelfish 03:25, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The edit that I was refering to was the one of Conchita Campbell. You said, "I edited Conchita Campbell adding box (did not remove photo)" but that wasn't true. Maybe it was an honest mistake but as you can see from here and here your edit of "(modifiied info box)" removed the picture. It's ok though, I put it back. Hi Noles, not been to Wikipedia for a while, so missed your post. We typically have about 900 overhang on the eaves. 3ft, sometimes we go the 4ft. This to suit sheet sizes. We used to use eaves vents a lot, and then combined with roof ventilators they are great. For some reason they seem to be going out of fashion. The shot you posted with the level eaves and the shaped barge boards reminds me of what we used to do in England. Sadly we don't see it much here in Northern Australia. Cheers, Keep up the good work. billbeee 08:05, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Old Mother Hubbard product.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. Fair use rationales

edit

Hi, thanks for your comment about the Florida Photographic Collection, unfortunately I have been off-wiki for some time. Are you still having problems with fair use issues cropping up? It seems likely that many of the FPC images are actually PD but just require identifying as such. Is there a systematic process going on of weeding through them all that needs some volunteers? Contacting an admin does sound like a good idea. Purgatorio 14:06, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's good that that sounds under control. Were all of the images really unique? I guess it's possible that some of the less old images may be merely difficult to replace, rather than impossible, so might slip through the fair use provision? Purgatorio 14:26, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense. It's a shame that so many Wikipedians are young! Having an "oldies drive" and a mass-scanning of volunteers' old photos might produce some real gems. But on the whole it is difficult to see how freely licensed images can be obtained from that period. Glad you've sorted out what you can, though. Purgatorio 15:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

To be honest I still think that it reads like an advertisement, but a little more covertly. I have no problem in people deleting it. It still needs a major overall to make it respect the enclyopedia like tone that Wikipedia strives for. However at this point is a whole lot better than what it was.

Kind regards

Orphaned non-free media (Image:FSU Womens logo.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:FSU Womens logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:28, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

as i wrote in the talk page i was hoping to start an overhaul and a cleanup of all the pages. the info boxes are nice but are unfortunately tacky. i am making graphics in CS3 that will have the same information with a better look to it.

I appreciate your help, I am also starting a Wikiproject: Florida State to help improve all of our pages and could use your help —Preceding unsigned comment added by UkrNole 485 (talkcontribs) 22:10, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Orchard Pond Plantation rc24108.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Orchard Pond Plantation rc24108.jpg.

Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:31, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
