Hi, when you correct film links, please check to see if that film has a wikipedia page first. The Barabbas film is listed as Barabbas (1962 film). Thanks for your awesome contributions to Jazz albums. You may want to consider adding the background color to the albums you add. I noticed that one of the albums you did Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook had a pink background! Check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums for the conventions. You should also if you can name articles with the full name e.g. "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the XXX Songbook". Famous Drinkers

Gareth, I am behind you 100% about keeping this open. I am not happy that these people got rid of one of my favorite categories! I am behind Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley, of course. I read your comparison to Modern Drunkard. What can we do? Create a new pro-drinking article? I will contribute A LOT to it. I feel there are too many righ-wing conservatives on Wiki that want to label alcohol as evil and do not want to show the positive sides of social drinking. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). Gareth, as I explained to people online, is used to personally advise on an option that one can take in making a decion. Ergo, the phrases "the author suggests" bascially translates into the author wants you to make a decision. The word "allege" means the author has presented facts that have not been validated, verified, or concretely proven through a myriad of sources. Therefore, say a bloke by the name of Juan Sanchez comes up and says he is Sammy Davis's uncle, he is making an allegation. He alleges to be a relative, but until this can be proven via scientific methods (for example DNA), via documentation (birth certificates), or through geneaological research, it is hearsay. Many people accuse President Bush of having to do with Valerie Plame's outing as a CIA agent, however, this is only a rumor, and until proven, these are allegations. If the allegations can be proven, then the word allegations can be changed to "proven" or "Verified" (or another related synonym). The English language as in any language can be worded that one word can mean different things. On a site like this it is important for the reader to analyze the matter presented and come to a concrete answer when doing their resarch. This is the principle rule in professional writing and investigative journalism. Anyone who doesn't comprehend or utilizes this approach is a mediocre writer at best who lackshigher education and experience. XLR8TION

Edukators

Where did you get the part about Barcelona? There was no mention as to where they were, and at first it just showed them in bed. It wasn't until after it was clear that they weren't in their apartment (ie, after the cops broke down the door) that you found out they were somewhere else. I even watched the ending it twice to make sure I wasn't missing something. It's possible that the different versions have slightly different endings. Thx for your support on GAS template, glad to see it made it thru. Just my 2 cents, use caution during deletion discussions, especially when making references that can be viewed as WP:OWN. The wiki-vultures love to swoop down on those and use it to minimize what is probably an effective discussion point. Subcategories of Category:Formula One cars

Hi Gareth. I see you are creating more subcategories of Category:Formula One cars, as I was doing this morning. Good work! How far were you planning to go? I would recommend not creating new subcategories for constructors for which there are only one or two cars, i.e. of the remaining constructors, I'd probably only create subcategories for Jordan and maybe Honda and Stewart. Are you planning to include the BMW Sauber F1.06 in Category:Sauber Formula One cars? Hi, yes, I Wished On The Moon is a song that Dorothy Parker wrote the lyrics for. In the 1930s she went to Hollywood and became a screenwriter. She penned a few movie songs out there too. Thanks for the message. I was mainly trying to find some forms of words that said something about the subject before saying that they are very different from US presidents' wives: I thought the original words said more about the latter than the former. Hope I made an improvement! I think it's a useful article and don't think it should be merged with the PM article (because that is already quite long). I have been trying to think of some other useful things to to say about the spouses: for instance I don't think Britain has had a divorced PM (but not sure); also not sure to what extent any of them played a significant political role. Question about responding to BetacommandBot's image challenges

Hi. I, like you, recently got a message from User:BetacommandBot recently to the effect that an album cover image on an article we both contributed to (specifically The Audience With Betty Carter) will be deleted for lacking adequate fair use information. I saw that you added new fair use information to that image page and to several others. Have you gotten any indication so far that your added information resolves the problem? If it somehow doesn't (by the standards of the person/bot who complained?), is there another warning or appeal process before the image is deleted, or does it just disappear? I want very much to protect the images I've added (and for that matter the ones you added to Betty Carter's discography!) but I haven't seen any examples to imitate of an album cover image with a fair use statement that places it beyond reproach. I left a message on BetacommandBot's talk page asking for such guidance, which Betacommand hasn't responded to yet - I was just wondering if you could shed any light on the issue since you seem to have some experience.

Re: Covers, blah

Thanks for your reply. Like you say, if any of them are taken down they can be re-uploaded (with slightly modified image names is best) and fair use statements added at that point. BetaCommand did reply to my request, sort of. He gave Image:Adam Faith.jpg and Image:Al Jolson Jazz Singer.JPG as examples of "ok" and "good" rationales, respectively. Neither of them is an album cover image, as I specifically requested; I asked again about those and will pass the response along to you if/when it comes. InnocuousPseudonym 03:55, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

If you have an image deleted for lack of rationale, the best process would be to write the rationale and contact the deleting admin who can undelete the image and add the rationale. ~ BigrTex 21:21, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Edit to The Audience With Betty Carter album chronology

I think I Didn't Know What Time It Was should stand outside the main chronology of Betty Carter recordings since it was a bootleg. If it is included, though, the book I have gives the year of recording as 1976, not 1970 (see the footnote in the I Didn't Know What Time It Was article).

Betacommand on album fair use rationales

I did get a response from Betacommand. He gives Image:BizarreRideIIthePharcyde.jpg as an example of an album cover with an adequate fair use rationale, which is not much different from the rationales you have been posting. As it's now June 2007, there's a high probability none of my predications will come true (in the case of Fidel Castro, that's too bad). Other reasons 1)The British Election prediction - that election won't happen 'til about 2009 (and Brown could just as easily win)- 2)The Canadian Election? Well too close to call (going by current polls)- 3 & 4) The William & Albert guesses were just that (guesses)- 5)The Nepal situation? It's been politically shaky since June 2001. Song articles

You're doing a great job with the creation of song articles. Just one point, I believe it's against Wikipedia policy to have external links to sites which violate copyright, such as the ones which post the copyrighted lyrics to Gershwin's or Berlin's songs. Category:Duke Ellington was recently put on the chopping block over at Categories for Discussion. I spent a bunch of time populating its subcategories including Category:Compositions by Duke Ellington, Category:Songs with music by Duke Ellington, Category:Compositions by Billy Strayhorn and Category:Duke Ellington Orchestra members and think the parent category contributes significantly to their navigability by tying them all together. Song lyric URL links

As far as I understand it, while it is a copyright violation to insert the actual lyrics of a song in an article, there is no problem with inserting a link to a URL where the lyric is given. Even if that site may be in copyright difficulty, Wikipedia is not. I noted you deleted a link to the lyrics of "My Shining Hour" recently. I restored it. -- BRG 19:09, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Track listing format

Actually, I'm not aware of any rules about track listing formats. Back in January, someone edited You're My Thrill (Doris Day album) (a page I created) to put it into table format, (see [3]) and I sort of decided I preferred that format, so when I needed to fix the Peggy Lee album track listing to correct a link, I reformatted it. If you really hate the tabular formatting, it can be put back -- what I really needed to do was fix a link that pointed to the wrong person. -- BRG 16:02, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeh, it was User:Moe Epsilon who formatted You're My Thrill. He did this to a number of Sinatra albums which I work on, but I reverted them. I just think it's cleaner the other way :). Feel free to ignore the following, but I am trying to move the page on the song "St. Louis Blues" back to its former, WP:NC-compliant namespace at St. Louis Blues (song) since it was moved to St. Louis Blues (music). It had been moved without discussion on the novel grounds that it is "very often not performed as a song." Just a suggestion

One thing we need to keep in mind is that (and we've seen it numerous times) people who are not aware of the older songs will think some of the true standards are "non-notable." One thing I've been doing (and especially note that you have not) is putting links to all songs that I can from everywhere that references them. You might want to go on Google and pur in the search window something like:

site:en.wikipedia.org "Old Devil Moon"

which will show you all the Wikipedia articles that have the words (most of which will be albums with the song in their tracklist or other places where you might want to do a link to the song from). This should help the task.

Of course, specifically for "Old Devil Moon" I've done it already; I just gave that as an example so you can see the syntax of the search query. -- BRG 13:22, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: Tramps

That's screwed up, the page should definitely be moved back to "The Lady Is a Tramp". I have never seen "This" used in the song's title, and the only explanation given in the edit summary is "the title was wrongly printed." "This Lady Is a Tramp" gets 590 Google hits (most of them for a 1980 film by that title), "The Lady Is a Tramp" gets 279,000. Wikipedia Inconsistency

I've reviewed Aretha Franklin's page and see Wikipedia allows her well-known nickname "Queen of Soul" and lesser known nicknames, "LadySoul" and "Sister Ree" in her introduction. Yet, you and Eliminator JR will not permit Gladys's nickname in her intro because "it doesn't belong" there. In the past, the reason given for not permitting it was "source it". Having sourced it, especially with the Society of Singer's official recognition of Gladys'nickname, please explain this inconsistency and justify your not permitting it for Gladys except for bias (I'm sure if I look I can find other nicknames in people's intro). You deleted the entire section of Matthew Ashimolowo's historic background and ministry activity because you said it was the worst attempt at white washing you had seen. However for someone who is the leader of a rather large church in London, his background information is important and in the public interest. After all the site is about him, not about his church. His entire information cannot simply be about his financial irregularities, for even if that had not happened, he would have been worthy of a Wiki site. I agree though that what was added was very unprofessional and completely biased, and evidently written by someone very fond on him like one of his members. Frank Sinatra films category

Looking at Category:Frank Sinatra, the top level contains a lot of his films, which would perhaps better be in a new Category:Frank Sinatra films. Except that his most famous films (Manchurian Candidate, From Here to Eternity, Von Ryan's Express ...) don't seem to be there. So is there a rationale for the categorization? Just wondering ... I'd love to create Category:Frank Sinatra films, but have always been discouraged from doing so by the current violent consensus. This annoys me, cause Sinatra isn't in a position to make any more films, and thus make a category unmanageable or non notable. As the person who originaly tagged the article for speedy deletion, I would like to make a comment about that. The article as it stood when it was tagged did not assert notability as specified in WP:SONG. When more content was added to the article, it turned out to actualy comply with all guidelines. The template was removed without further discussion. The tag was placed in good faith of my behalf, and I am not part of any 'they' that are out to get 'your articles'. Afterall, we're all in this to write the best encyclopedia we can. I won't say I never make mistakes, but when I do, I like to believe I am quick to admit them, and make sure we can move on, and make things better. Re: Sinatra category

Actually I will be surprised if the main Category:Frank Sinatra goes. The rules for categories named after people are designed to accomodate ones where there are several different articles about different aspects of the person's life or work. Articles like Frank Sinatra's recorded legacy mean that the main Sinatra category fulfills this requirement, whatever happens to the subcategories. I said yesterday's PM which certainly was broadcast - the interviewer was Nick Robinson. How is 'direct answer' loaded. She was asked did she or any of her team approach this man or his proxy for money. Simple enough question to answer. She could not do so and changed the subject, she was asked again and again changed the subject and on the third asking weas still unable to give a yes no answer. Though I totally agree with you on this subject, as I heard the same interview, it is still open to interpretation as to the directness of her answer. If you listen to the relevant parts of th interview again I think you will find the word 'evasion' best describes the answers she gave. If she could possibly have answered positively from her point of view she would have. a highlight of the interview is surely the contrast of how she aimed to 'stick to both the letter and spirit of the law' at the beginning and by the end has been shown to be peddling in half truths and falsehoods.As for what is illegal or not illegal....if i crash my car into someone and drive away then that is illegal, i would not expect to have to wait till an appearance before a judge to find out about the legality of my actions. What they did is against their own recent law and the police should be involved. If we assume for a second that her inability to answer the question in question :) means that her campaign team were indeed tipped off that they should contact the Abrahams proxy....and that her inability to answer indicates that she knows this to be the case then surely that would mean she is culpable. Further, if word was put out that the proxy was good for a few quid then how likely is it really that those moving in these circles were really unaware that the proxy was indeed just that, a proxy. That's not correct. Wikipedia shows under the text: "This pop standards-related article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." So I did.
And about the copyright: all over the web lyrics are available. All Sinatra songs, all Ella songs, you name it and it's available for reading.
So let's keep it this way until some moderator thinks Wikipadia will be sued for this.

I would like my Deleted Page Content

The page 'Robert Fletcher' was deleted on January 8th. I would like the content back so to place on a purchased website space. The content of 'Robert Fletcher' had been upkept for over a year and the information is unlisted on any other resource. Paul Burrell

Why do you keep deleting newly added information on Paul Burrell? All the new information has refrences from reputible sites, including the BBC.

Ok, i think first off that most people will regonise that the description given is the same given in all sources, even the BBC website states this, thus i feel it is fair to include such commetns as there is a general agreement in different sources that this is correct. As for suggesting ulterior motives for Burrells actions - i feel this give sthe readers of the page histoiry behind the story of Burrell in general, not all will know that there is often a perception here (in the UK) for Burrel having "cashed in". I DO NOT state these as facts but possibilities, thus leaving readers to make up their own minds. I live in the UK as well, and couldn't give two hoots about Burrell or Fayed's pointless inquest, but your edit leads readers to a general conclusion, namely that Burrell is an opportunist. I propose the following text :

In January 2008 Burrell appeared as a witness at the Inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Burrell said that he had approached a Catholic priest about a private marriage between Diana and the heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan , and he rubbished rumours that Diana was about to annouce her engagement to Dodi Fayed .

The coronor dismissed notions of a "secret" that Burrell knew about Diana that he swore he "would never reveal", as detailed at the end of his book, A Royal Duty .

Rothschild clock

Will you please stop editing the text regarding the recently sold Rothschild Clock on the Faberge egg page. It was documented in 1964 and I have provided the reference REPEATEDLY. 1964 predates November 2007 when the sale catalogue was published and shows beyond any doubt that the clock was documented prior to Christies sale. Christies have since acknowledged their error in saying it was not previously published. The BBC page you keep referring to was written by a random journalist who was innocently repeating the erroneous claim that Christies no longer make. If you have any doubts go to the library and read the book yourself or call Christies in London and ask for Anthony Phillips head of the Russian department and he will tell you you are wrong. You may also email Mr Ivanov the purchaser via www.rnm.ru and ask him personally. I have amended the Rothschild Egg page to reflect the above; kindly leave that alone too. Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

Hi Gareth,

I am the commuications officer for the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. I recently updated the Wiki entry for the foundation. There was incorrect information posted. (e.g. the foundation's inception date is September 2000, not 2003).

What I posted was a general backgrounder on the foundation, not a press release nor an article. Just basic, current facts. This needs to be restored. Right now what is posted is wrong, and gives a very misleading picture of what the Foundation is all about.

Jazz cats etc.

I certainly agree with you that these categories need to be merged; I don't have any strong preference for one name over the other, though I guess I would lean slightly toward "Vocal jazz" as that word order seems somewhat more common and conventional.

I'd love to see the Betty Carter article in better shape, but aside from looking up specific pieces of information and citations I haven't read the whole Bauer book for a couple of years now and good as it is I don't see myself getting around to it in the forseeable future. My life has gotten much busier in recent months and I have been doing a lot less on Wikipedia, mostly doing maintenance on articles I created last year and making the odd original contribution. No problem. It didn't take much effort as I just copied what you had to start with, then thought later about dividing it further. I meant to post you a message to say I had sneakily taken it, though I did put you in the edit summary when I saved it! I don't want to take the credit for not doing that much! I tend to think a list (in some form) of recordings or performances does bring something to a song article, and many song articles have them. Basically, it's information. FYI: Discussions at WP:ANI have repeatedly supported the user as being able to remove most content from their own talk page, provided it's not disruptive (the main items barred from removal are denied block removal requests during a block). As a result, I would suggest against making edits to restore your edits on talk pages ... it serves simply to provide those users for material to claim a 3RR issue against you. Also, I suggest you not worry about whether the site-owners real name is directly connected with the spammer's Wikipedia accounts. It just opens the door to a lot of peripheral side drama and potentially gets you in hot water. (Trust me, I've been there).

It's very simple. One more link spammed anywhere in Wikipedia and the domains get blacklisted. Otherwise, we don't have much to discuss with this guy. If he decides to spam again and gets his domains blacklisted, there's still nothing to discuss.

Princess Diana article

after reading the discussions on the talk page, I came to the conclusion that what had been stated there (create a page dedicated to the Institute for Peace) would be the best solution. So I did that (the first article that I have ever created !!) so after lots of mistakes, I worked out how to do it, there were issues with the naming, feel free to go there and change it.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%28Sri_Lanka%29_Princess_Diana_Institute_of_Peace and if you could help with the citations, then it would be nice.

It is hard to assume good faith sometimes, regarding the other editor who removed the statement and his location, it would be damn easy to assume that conflict of interest came into play..however as you may have worked out by my edits, I am certainly not from Sri Lanka, I don't give a flying f.. about politics relating to Sri Lanka, I just edit whatever I feel like.

Is consensus in favour of deletion? or do you think their should be more discussion? 3rd party intervention? Sammy Davis Jr. "satanist" deletion

Thanks for contacting me about this. I do understand your position about my talking about alerting his estate. I kind of knew when I posted it that it would naturally be read as a threat, even though I sincerely don't mean it as a threat. I know it sounds like me saying "don't you revert, or I'm gonna call Sammy's estate". It's sometimes hard to express intent though text - there is no tone of voice, etc. to give one clues. I just looked at the LONG back-and-forth discussion about this, and thought deleting it would probably just result in it being reverted - there seem to be some people highly invested in keeping the rumor on his page. I thought that if we can't settle it here, maybe Davis's heirs could definitively settle it, even if their settlemen would be to ask the Wikipedia management to make sure this is not on his article. It borders on libel, and is hardly encyclopedic. If I had an encyclopedia article written about me, and someone added some possibly libelous information in it, I hope someone would alert me so I could set the record straight. It's any wikipedian's choice to revert my edit, and it's Wikipedia management's choice to decide whether or not that exposes them to a libel suit, and it's Davis's heirs' choice to decide if they want to ask that it be permanently deleted, or seek legal relief. In order for Davis's heirs to have that choice, they have to know about it, they have the right, but wikipedians and Wikipedia have the right to know in advance that I would alert his estate, which is why I said I would. Again, I didn't mean it as a threat, but I guess there is no way to say it that wouldn't be taken as one. If the edit is reverted, I will not alert the estate until after I have contacted Wikipedia management, to give them a fair chance to deal with the situation internally.Mmyers1976 (talk) 17:17, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

His estate is an ongoing entity which still earns from use of his likeness and royalties from his artistic products and could be financially harmed by damage to his reputation. I don't know the law in UK, but in the US, depending upon the state in which the suit is brought, relatives of a dead person can sue for libel. For instance, in my state, Oklahoma, the law reads:

"Libel is a false or malicious unprivileged publication by writing, printing, picture, or effigy or other fixed representation to the eye, which exposes any person to public hatred, contempt, ridicule or obloquy, or which tends to deprive him of public confidence, or to injure him in his occupation, or any malicious publication as aforesaid, designed to blacken or vilify the memory of one who is dead, [683 P.2d 1349] and tending to scandalize his surviving relatives or friends."Mmyers1976 (talk) 16:25, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I also tend to place album articles in their 'recorded' place in a discography (Ella in Rome: The Birthday Concert was released in 1988, but I place it in 1958, with a note saying so as to avoid confusing the casual reader [6]) Should I add a note to A Classy Pair? Thanks for working on Basie. We need some sort of discography.....Miles Davis has an excellent one, and there is a budding attempt at Count Basie Orchestra. Thanks... I suppose the thing is to put the issue date in the infobox correctly so that one is distinguishing between the object/commercial product/disc and the concert or sessions, as the box has places for both dates. Maybe there should be a Basie discography article in chronological performance order with issue dates in a second column.... with lots of bluelinks. I found a long list of albums on an ext site [7] but am not sure what they are doing. For instance, my copy of 'Chairman of the Board' which is a Roulette Vamp series has a clear P 1970 on the label, though the sessions are 1958. Was there a 1958 issue? And some of the Verve albums have been issued as reproduction LP copies, confusingly both by dutch companies in the 1980s and by Verve in 2002-ish (eg Count Basie King of Swing, 1953-1954).
