Artigo de João Garcia edit

Oi Viva!

Cumprimentos,fernando_vilarinho

Infobox edit

I have reverted the addition a few times of the new info box on U2. This is because it is not an improvement on the old one, in fact the reverse. It has no new functionality (none that is apparent anyway) and honestly, it looks childish. The previous version you just replaced looks much cleaner instead of having silly colour banding. Can you answer 2 questions: (1) on what grounds must it be changed (ie, what does "superceded mean in this case") (2) what advantage does it provide? --Merbabu 13:51, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorting animations edit

Hey,

You've uploaded a bunch of sorting animations - but they're all very confusing. Intersting - but confusing. Could you explain what those pictures are doing, because me and a couple of people were quite confused. Thanks. Fresheneesz 10:42, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The pictures show the sorting of a list of 100 randomly sorted numbers. The original list is in the form L(1)=1,L(2)=2,L(3)=3...L(N)=N, and is then randomly permuted, so you obtain a list like, for example, L(1)=31,L(2)=23,...L(N)=12, with the same N numbers. In the animations, the x-axis represents the indexes of the list, while y-axis represent the values of the elements of the list. This list is then sorted as shown in the animations, i a way that varies from algorithm to algorithm. They are similar to those uploaded by RolandH (e.g. Image:Sorting quicksort anim.gif), but without all the fancy arrows and the vertical bars (just the top dots). For the list mentioned earlier, the sorted list is represented by all elements placed over a diagonal line, because when the list is sorted, L(1)=1, L(2)=2,... L(N)=N.
I'm not sure I was clear, but if you have any further doubts feel free to ask. - Nmnogueira 12:20, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I figured that was how it worked - but some of the images such as the one to the right don't seem to act that way. The dots seem to clump together - rather than change x position. Fresheneesz 02:13, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're right, the animation is wrong. I've been looking to the code that produced it and I think I know where the problem is, but I have to make some major changes to correct it. In the meanwhile the animation shouldn't be used, of course. Thank you for the remarks! - Nmnogueira 12:03, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorting algorithms edit

Love your animations on the majority of the comparison sort pages, and inspired by them (to give me something to do as well) I made a quick program that does the same thing for every kind of comparison sort listed. Shell sort/Comb Sort/Gnome sort and particularly the quite useless esoteric stooge sort would greatly benefit from your animations I feel, if you ever have any more spare time ;). Makes them much easier to visualize. I could try and make my animations look like yours, but I wouldn't do it without your consent first. It might also be worthwhile to try throwing on a comparison and swap count on the animations? Then again, don't know how meaningful it would be... other then revealing that selection sort makes fewer swaps then any other algorithm =/ Themania 06:00, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you, it would be great to have more sorts with animations. Unfortunately, I'm not having much free time lately to do the animations. If you wish, I can give you the code to generate the images in Matlab so you can make similar images to other sorts, that would be great! About the swap count, I don't think the results would be meaningful, as most algorithms are studied mathematically for their performance not only on randomly swapped lists, but also in inversely sorted ones, partially sorted lists, etc. and for mean, best and worst-case scenario. Also, the performance of the algorithm varies with the implementation, and my implementations were made quickly just to obtain the animation, being terribly inefficient both computationally and in terms of memory :( - Nmnogueira 22:43, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removed spacing edit

Hi Nmnogueira, why did you remove the spacing? at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Drill_bit&oldid=218412288#Well_drilling_bits

Look at the difference you made visually. With the spacing, the pic of the drill bit (with the description) is in between the lines above and below it. In the version without the spacing the pic extends down past the next sections line. It looks a lot more tidy and visually appealing with the spacing than without. Motto of the day edit

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I removed them because it is probably not fair use (even in a legal sense, never mind wikipedia policy) to reproduce in their entirety a complete, copyrighted deck of cards. Odd-even sort edit

Hi, I was wondering about the algorithm you used for the animation of Odd-Even sort. It looks like a cocktail sort (ie, bubble sort, but going right, then left, etc). However, the article says that an Odd-Even sort is a variation of bubble-sort (so no left to right, right only). Am I correct? If I am, I'll just make a minor article edit, as I find it is a little bit confusing, as the animation has nothing to do BubbleSort's. happypal (Talk | contribs) 11:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Odd-Even sort is a variation of Bubble sort in the sense that it is an exchange sort, besed on comparison of data pairs. It is not a coktail sort, it works going right only, just like the article says. I don't know if it is correct to state that it is based on bubble sortn though... The reason why the animation looks a bit like a bubble sort working left and right, is hard to explain. Try looking at the pseudocode. Basically, it's because each part of the algorithm ("even" and "odd"), only swap the even or odd pairs. In bubble sort the algorithm swaps all pairs sequentially, so the largest element will go to the end of the list on the each cycle. Sorry for the bad explanation! - nmnogueira (talk) 15:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

MOTDs (This space for rent) edit

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. That way we can have a real MOTD in the future rather than re-using (This space for rent). Any help would be appreciated! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 12:17, 7 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Kukkiwon logo.png) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Kukkiwon logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 15:56, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bubblesort graphic, fixed labeling of x and y edit

I took a look at the graphic you made for bubble sort. Great graphic! I think the x and y variables were mislabeled. I have changed x to indicate index and y to indicate value on the page. Please let me know if I am mistaken. Thanks. Deconvolution (talk) 11:32, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014 edit

Today's motto...

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Nominate one today!

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).
