Dr Sachey Kumar Pahari MRCP FRCS popularly known as Dr S.K. Pahari was a stalwart in the field of medicine and a pioneer of medical science and education of Nepal [1] [2]. He died at the age of 80 in 2015 in Kathmandu following an illness after a career spanning over five decades.

Early life and education

Dr SK Pahari received his early education from Nepal and India before proceeding to the United Kingdom for further qualification including MRCP and FRCS. [3] [4].

Accomplishments

Dr Pahari started his career at Bir Hospital as a Senior Physician following his return from the United Kingdom [5][6]. He was also the Physician to King Mahendra [7] and King Birendra [8] and later became the first Nepali to be honoured with the title of "Royal Physician" by King Birendra, a rank that had only been previously held by overseas doctors [9] [10].

Dr Pahari established Nepal Medical College and Teaching Hospital in Jorpati, Kathmandu in 1997 as its Founding Executive Chairman with a pro-poor vision [11][12] He was also the Founding Chairman of Norvic International Hospital, a cardiac specialist centre in Thapathali, Kathmandu. In 2014, Dr Pahari was facilitated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister during a ceremony organised at Norvic International Hospital during the inauguration of its diagnostic centre [13].

In his long and distinguished career, Dr Pahari held several other positions including President of Nepal Health Research Council (2003-2006) [14] [15]and Chairman of Nepal Medical Association [16].

Aside from medicine, Dr Pahari also enjoyed composing poetry, had harboured great interest in Nepali art, literature and music [17]. He was a published lyricist and had released several albums including Deu Chuli Ra Barchuli along with his wife, which featured the voices of prominent national singers including Nati Kaji and Tara Devi [18].
