Avanta is a serviced office company which, as of April 2010, operates 19 business centres in the UK and one in New Delhi, India. It offers flexible serviced office space, meeting rooms and virtual offices in partnership with Davinci Virtual UK. In July 2009, it also entered into a partnership with Regent Business Centers, who operate buildings throughout the United States.
History
editAvanta was founded in January 2004 by David Alberto and a team of executives, the majority of whom had previously worked together at MWB Business Exchange. The first business centre, on Mortimer Street W1, opened in April 2004. 83 Victoria Street SW1 quickly followed, opening in May 2004 with Media Village, on Great Titchfield Street W1, opening in June 2004.
2005 saw a steady increase in the number of business centres, with 10 Margaret Street W1, 6 out of 11 floors at 1 Lyric Square W6, 48 Charlotte Street W1 and 18 Hanover Square W1 opening.
In 2006, 31 Southampton Row WC1 and the remaining floors at Lyric Square were opened, taking the total number of business centres in London to 8.
In January 2007, the company underwent a management buyout by the Kenmore Property Group. This provided Avanta with £100 million of funds to fuel expansion in the UK and abroad. Shortly afterwards, the first business centre outside London was opened; Dukesbridge House in Reading. Avanta also continued its rapid London expansion with 271 Regent Street W1 as well as a stunning City Location; 23 Austin Friars EC2. 2007 also saw Avanta supporting Sparks, the children’s medical research charity, and the first race day at Kempton Park was held in September 2007, raising over £30,000 for the charity. In December 2007, Avanta signed on an office development in Royal Mills, a regenerated former cotton mill in the Ancoats area of Manchester. The centre opened in January 2008.
2008 saw a significant number of locations added to the portfolio; Hanover Street EH2 in Edinburgh, 120 Bath Road UB3 next to Heathrow Airport, Orange Street WC2, College Road Harrow HA1, Saunders House W5 Ealing and 20 Hanover Square W1. It also cemented its commitment to service levels by joining the ICS (Institute of Customer Service) and providing training and accreditation to all members of the centre teams.
June 2008 saw Avanta sign on their first overseas venture, in India and hire Sean Morgan to head up the international arm of the business. Sean joined Avanta from Regus, where he was Operations Director for its Asia-Pacific region. The first centre in India opened in September 2008 at Statesman House, Connaught Place, New Delhi.
In October 2008, Avanta partnered with US based virtual office provider, Davinci Virtual. Using highly sophisticated platforms, Davinci offers more than just call and mail forwarding; outbound sales calls, order processing, diary management all paid for in easy to manage per second increments.
January 2009 saw the launch of a new city building in Devonshire Square EC2. Avanta was also listed in the Sunday Times Best Small Companies to Work For 2009 for the first time. An initiative with Think London, the inward investment company, was extended, offering foreign companies one free desk for up to a year in a choice of 3 Avanta centres; 1 Lyric Square W6, 20 Hanover Square W1 and 9 Devonshire Square EC2.
Another two locations in Mumbai, India were opened; Platina, in Bandra-Kurla Complex and Oval House, in Fort, Mumbai. The management team moved into Platina to run operations from there.
July 2009 saw the partnership agreed between Regent Business Centers and Avanta. This was to form an alliance and both centres promote the others to their geographical areas.
Despite the UK business remaining in a strong position, the economic downturn affected business in India and the decision was taken to close the Mumbai business centres in September 2009. Statesman House in Delhi remained open.
A final London centre, an MLS building, was added to the portfolio in October 2009, 26 Dover Street, London W1. January 2010 saw Fetter Lane EC4 also added to the City locations.
In January 2010 Avanta launched APM Property Management with Richard Douglas and Patrick Maher. The company operates as a commercial agency and property management company and its aim is to address the gap between a conventional lease and serviced office space.
Operations and services
editAvanta sets itself apart from other operators in the business by offering unbranded business centres, transparent pricing and first class customer service. It does not use a cookie cutter approach to it centers, but rather fits its product to the location, from the impressive Austin Friars in the heart of the City, to the more artistic Media Village in the West End.
