FAQ (answers to frequently asked questions):
- You seem to be reviewing all my edits {or words to that effect}?
- That may or may not be true, but you shouldn't worry about it or take it personally. Most of my time on Wikipedia is spent running thru lists of articles checking for light 'housekeeping' issues--format, punctuation, grammar, typos, etc. Where I get the lists is pretty immaterial to me--sometimes they're from Newpages, sometimes Recent changes, sometimes 'what links here', sometimes from other people's contrib lists, etc.--I've used all those sources and others multiple times, and will probably continue to do so, as I get bored editing from lists from just one of the sources. It is also possible that it is just coincidence--if you added or changed a bunch of articles in a row, I may encounter all of them working Newpages or Recent changes lists, etc.
- Why do you put a comma before 'and' and 'or' in a serial list (serial comma)?
- Per Wikipedia Manual of Style: Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Commas [I am aware there is a proposal to change this, but I don't want to have to check the status of that proposal every day. Besides, over 4 years and 500,000 articles into the project I think is WAY too late to be making such sweeping changes, at least without a very compelling reason, and I see no such compelling reason in this case.]
- Why do you make most words in headers all lowercase?
- Per Wikipedia Manual of Style: Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(headings)#Capitalisation
- Why do you not speedy delete orphan redirects?
- Redirects from common misspellings and alternate spellings, capitalizations (EG Uss wadsworth for USS Wadsworth), words, or phrases help users of the Search box find what they're looking for, as well as prevent accidental duplication of existing articles. For example, note the redirs to Mahatma Gandhi[1]. Relevant guideline: Wikipedia:Redirect#What_do_we_use_redirects_for.3F
I am registered at a couple other Wikipedias, but this is the only one I'm likely to see messages on in any reasonable time frame.

RfC
editYou write: #Niteowlneils 19:27, 7 August 2005 (UTC) Keeping an article with only 0-10% "keep" votes is outlandish. If 90-100% of the votes are merge/redir and delete, with no clear preference between the two, then merge/redir is the best way to go.
- Maybe so. But any editor can perform that action. It's votes for deletion, not votes for merge. As a result of this RfC, I am calling all results of my VfD closes as keep or delete. I am going to carry on performing merges and the like only outside the close. Also I absolutely refute the suggestion that 6 votes to delete and 6 votes to merge constitutes a consensus to merge. --Tony SidawayTalk 19:38, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Help!
editWho in heaven's name is User:24? I saw his "oppose" vote on my adminship and this guy has come seemingly out of nowhere. Please tell me this guy's vote won't count. - Lucky 6.9 18:56, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
Thank you so very much for stepping up to the plate for me on this issue with this new user. The guy wants to assume good faith, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm also pleased that I'm earning a reputation for things other than the occasional hasty speedy delete vote. :) This "Dvirgueza" is leaving quite a mess in his wake. Those "Teen Titans" and "Dragonball Z" stills on his user page are all watermarked. Oh, the fun. If I'm fortunate enough to pass the RfA tomorrow, I might as well get used to wearing the mantle. I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions regarding User:Ronald20? He's acting a bit like the "B-Movie Bandit" of old in his refusal to answer inquiry. I'll take anything you can give. Thanks again! - Lucky 6.9 05:09, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Primary candidates VFD
editMany of the candidates for the June 14, 2005, congressional primary have been proposed for deletion. I am writing those who worked on those articles to request that they offer their votes against the proposal. The VFD's can be found starting at Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Log/2005_August_8#Peter_Fossett. It is my view that we ought to provide a complete record of the election and my deleting so called "minor" candidates we do a disservice to them and the historical record. Please vote against all these proposals.PedanticallySpeaking 14:54, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
P.S.: Thanks for your work with the Tom Brinkman article. I don't understand people voting against solely on the basis of photographs. When I've tried to advance articles without pictures, I got opposition votes on that too. It's a no win situation.
When my book was published, Politico's still had its shop on Artillery Row; the publishing division is separate and is now part of Methuen (Methuen now pay the royalty cheques when I get them). I can't remember how many it sold though. David | Talk 23:14, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

List of California County Routes
editper your vote at talk:List of California County Routes: You may be interested to know that there is a similar survey going on at Talk:List of California state routes. The guiding rules in the naming of both articles is in Wikipedia:Naming conventions. "county route" and "state route" are just like freeway, avenue, boulevard, street, etc. None of them are propler nouns and so they should be lower case. BlankVerse ∅ 04:11, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

editFirst, let me say thank you for taking the time and effort to help clear out the backlog at WP:RM.
Now some comments. It is not necessary to strike (i.e.<s>) out completed requests. RM is not logged, so once a request is dealt with it can simply be removed. Secondly, when completing a move, it is customary to remove the {{move}} template from the talk page hosting the discussion, and to subst {{moved}}
or {{notmoved}}
to the end of the votes, as a way of closing the discussion.

Ohio Primary
editHey, Niteowl. Normally I wouldn't do this, but I see Pedantically Speaking has already tried to encourage you to vote for keeping articles on every politician involved in the Ohio primary, and you expressed that you tend to agree with the deletion of them. If you could vote on them, I, at least, would appreciate it. I tend to dislike it when people go around gathering votes on a VfD, unless it is done irrespective of how someone is likely to vote (in an effort to get a consistent result on all the people involved I encouraged everyone who voted on one to vote on them all, regardless of how they voted), but it's already been done. Particularly since you pointed out how easy it is to get on the ballot, I am quite opposed to the notion that 25 signatures and $100 gets you a wikipedia article. I really think wikipedia needs a policy on politicians, like it has for music and fiction, but until it does it all comes down to VfD. I mean, one of the reasons PS stated Eric Minamyer should be kept is that he was on a school board. At least one guy got less than .5% of the vote. I think some of these are really getting out of hand. -R. fiend 17:27, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

CSI: cesium iodide
editI noticed you removed my secondary cesium iodide link leaving only the main caesium iodide one. While I'll agree they do constitute duplicate links and that the main page uses the caesium iodide spelling, I think it is still probably best to leave the cesium iodide link. I think a lot of people are unaware of the alternate spelling and, when confronted with an alphabetized list such as that, might miss the British spelled link, especially if the remaining of those links to uncreated pages start filling in. I haven't attempted to re-add the link, thinking it best to first discuss this with you and leave the decision up to you. --Fuzzball! (talk) 23:17, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Is there an easy way to collectively tag multiple entries for VfD?
editHi there, I'm looking at the contributions from 68.23.149.212. They're all related and seem to be nothing more than spam for a web site with an Alexa rank of over 1.77 million. I don't think they obviously meet speedy delete criteria, but going through the VfD process for each one individually will take a while. --GraemeL (talk) 22:46, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. Obvious when I see how it was done. Do vfd1 and vfd2 templates for each entry. After doing the vfd3 template part for the 1st one, edit the sub-section that it creates and add the other links. --GraemeL (talk) 23:32, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Punch (engineering) - Punch (tool)
editI should have called the page puch (metalworking) but it was during the (my) very early days and terminology requires planning, none of which was in great supply at the time. I'll move the page to punch (metalworking) and that will leave punch (tool) for all the non-metal related uses, I'd imagine there are a few left to be entered.

New Article Help?
editHi, I'm User:Ascan, and I grew up in SE Virginia (mostly VB). I was a Navy brat and I'm currently active duty, and I was wondering if you could help me start an article on the "Spokane Trophy"[2], as I am a very new Wikipedian. I have attempted to contact the Navy League of Spokane to request permission to use their photos and information, however my e-mail to the webmaster was returned stating "no such user". Would you be willing to help me start the article or at least guide me to someone who you think would be more interested? I am appreciate any help you could give me.
Dear User: Ascan: First, I suggest that it would be good to go to your user page, and tell evryone a little bit about yourself, as you did above. This will help other users in identifying with you and encourage them to help you also. Tip: enter four tilde signs, (to the left of the 1 on my keyboard in the Caps positon, and your messages will automatically be signed and dated.) I am now typing four tildes (no spaces) and this is what it will sign: Vaoverland 10:08, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
OK, Let's give writing a new article on Spokane Trophy a try. The advice which follows is MY way of researching to come up with content, which may or may not be as much in compliance with Wikipedia Style guidelines as you will choose to be (no one is perfect, but we strive to comply).
1. Look at the article I collaborated with User:Slambo on called Autorack. Then look at the same article, which was specially marked up with tons of writing tips by User:Niteowlneils. The Annotated Article for Autorack can be found at Wikipedia:Annotated article. This is a very valuable way to see how to write an article in an attractive style and keep track of the information, etc.
2. I suggest you join Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships and on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships let them know that you are writing your first article on Spokane Trophy. the members will be knowledgeable about similar topics and will probably be glad to help you with good ship-related article.
OK, on to your new Spokane Trophy article.
3. First, you asked how I do it, I like to work on content (ie text first), and then seek images after story is more or less in first draft form.
Rather than ask for permission to copy stuff from a single source, we want to use multiple sources for Wikipedia articles, and then compile the factual information into an original article. A single source would probably require the kind of permission you requested (and didn't get). Therefore, in addition to learning what I can from the link you provided, the next thing I would do is determine some more information about the subject. To do that, I will do a Google search, a Yahoo search, and sometimes more searches (ie MSN, Altavista, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, etc.) depending upon the amount of hits and quality of web sites I can find. NOTE: I have now checked as described and there are multiple sites with the lost of text information you can use to create your content. ::NOTE: I found good data on Google and Yahoo searches on the words: Spokane Trophy! Follow up on multiple hits,a nd consider what seem to be the more credible sources.
4. By using multiple sources, you do not need their permission to obtain facts which you will use, so long as you are not copying en masse and verbatim (exactly worded) their text. You should keep track of where the items of specific information comes from, so you can cite your sources. However, unless you are using a single source to bets make a point, I find listing the sources at end of article is usually sufficient. If quoting an entire sentence or two, or if you feel that the source is particularly important, then a footnote for the source right after the information is presented can be done by putting the URL in single brackets.
For instance (I am making this up), since the following is obviously an opinion for which we would want to know the source. If the content in your article made the statement which follows: TEXT: According to the local residents, the Spokane Trophy is more greatly valued by people from the south side of Spokane than anywhere else. END TEXT, Then I would immediately attribute that statement (again a fictitious source) by pasting the URL of the source in single brackets, which would end up like this: [3]
5. Remember that your personal opinion is not a source, although you may find sources with which you agree,a nd you can certainly present the independently sources information you agree with.
6. Only after doing the text content, would I consider images. That gets trickier, and you will also need to follow WP guidelines there, or let other users help spice up your story with images, if that is not your strong point. In this instance, US Navy images are generally public domain for WP purposes, and that may be a good source for you, so your task may be a bit easier on this article than some for other subjects. Personally, I have found it too hard to get permission for images not already in public domain or otherwise OK for use in WP without specifically getting permission, so if I can't find something it is OK to use without asking, I'd let someone else worry about images. If you write your initial article well with enough interesting content, other contributors will read it,a nd begin enhancing it with content and often pictures.
7. I use ieSpell (a free program) to help avoid putting content out with bad spelling, although others will surely come behind you and take a whack at poor grammar, spelling, etc., assuming your article is of interest. I've found that almost anything I write an article on for WP has someone else interested in it. That's part of the fun, because then i learn even more as I watch changes.
8. Add internal links for words in your content which have Wikipedia articles. This will help other writers find your article as well and add to the collaborative effort to refine your article.
9. As you probably know, click on the red link Spokane Trophy and begin the article, saving it with the edit summary "New Article" in the box at the bottom. Your first effort may not be outstanding, but others will help, and you'll get better as you go.
I now have some info on your subject, so one you start the article, I will try be among those to help spruce it up. If you get your feelings hurt easily, WP may not be for you, as others will surely edit your work and may chose to say somethings differently. However, I have found that most changes to articles I begin have been improvements, and what is best for the quality of Wikipedia is more important than my ego or personal preferences. Occasionally, I need to remind myself of that, and maybe you will too.
So, tell us about it, and Good luck!
Yours in Historic Triangle of Virginia, Mark. Vaoverland 10:08, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
"Cartoon Vandal" returns?
editOn 9 July 2005 you blocked User:24.60.133.207 as the "Cartoon Vandal". User:24.60.128.48 was warned on 7 June 2005 about edits, mainly putting spurious "voice credits" in Thomas the Tank Engine character articles. For example, crediting Emma Watson as Emily, which has not been cited or verified (A Google search and search of IMDb also gave nothing). Today I have warned User:209.80.142.210 about a number of very similar edits which have happened today (see User talk:209.80.142.210).
Basically I believe User:209.80.142.210 is the "Cartoon Vandal" - take a look at 209.80.142.210 contributions and see if you agree.
Úbeda
editHello, sorry for the long message.
In March 2005, there was a WP:RM request and vote (which you took part in) to move Úbeda to Ubeda, with a 6-3 result, see Talk:Ubeda#Requested_move:_.C3.9Abeda_.E2.86.92_Ubeda (or perhaps here if renamed).
However, beginning in April 2005 and lasting several months, there was a survey conducted at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (use English)#Proposal and straw poll regarding place names with diacritical marks, with dozens of participants voting and discussing over an extended period of time. The purpose of the survey was to try to gather feedback for what the policy should be globally. Proponents of diacritics were in the majority, and in general, use of diacritics is widespread in actual practice on Wikipedia today (particularly since the Mediawiki upgrade to Unicode).
However, for Úbeda/Ubeda, Philip Baird Shearer is stating that the WP:RM vote takes precedence over the survey results, and a new WP:RM vote would be required to move it to Úbeda. My position is that there should be a global policy rather than case-by-case voting -- that was the whole purpose of the survey. In discussion with him, I wrote:
- Just as we wouldn't have case-by-case voting on, say, capitalization issues for articles (eg, prepositions in movie and book titles should be lowercase, globally), we shouldn't have case-by-case voting on diacritic issues.
See the discussion at Talk:Ubeda#Talk_page_discussion_on_page_move (or perhaps here if renamed).
As a possible alternative to calling a new WP:RM vote which might set a precedent for case-by-case voting across thousands of articles, I am polling all the participants of the original WP:RM vote to ask:
- Regardless of how you voted in the WP:RM voting, which do you believe should take precedence: the earlier WP:RM vote on the specific article, or the subsequent survey?
Note, since Philip Baird Shearer was one of the participants in that vote, he will also be receiving this message and thus will have the opportunity to respond. -- Curps 05:53, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
For what it's worth, and for the information of all the voters in the March requested move vote, there's now a new requested move vote at Talk:Ubeda. -- Curps 01:31, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Surname pages
editWhy do you delete these surname pages? I don't see any reason to do so; these are perfectly useful disambiguation pages. If you disagree, take them to AFD. Lupo 10:20, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

In any case, none of these pages were speedy deletion candidates. Take them to WP:AFD, if you must, but don't unilaterally speedy them. Lupo 14:41, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Page move
editCompletely without announcement, an article was moved from its common English name Nidhogg to the old Norse version Níðhöggr, even though a proposal to move mythology articles to non-English spellings failed to gain consensus. You have expressed interest in simular page moves in the past. Please take a minute to look at this one. CDThieme 18:52, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

editNeil: I hope things are going better for you. Some things in my life are better than when I wrote you and some are worse. It reminds me of Mother May I, ie one step forward, two back, two forward, one back, etc. At the moment, I am fortunate just to have dial-up access on a friend's AOL account during the wee hours. Anyway, I was thinking of you and wishing you well. Mark. Vaoverland 06:08, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Dear Niteowlneils, I've been adding to the Largo, Florida page and I'm concerned with all the external links I've added. Is it possible to have too many? I also wonder if the timeline should have a page of his own. Could you take a loo at it?
Thanks,

Image of meerkat
editAre you behind this image? I went through edits of the San Jose, California page around the time of early February 2005 (as that is what the image page says), and found an edit from you in which the image was added.

editMeerkat
edit1: No personal attacks. Come on, attacking someone personally will get you nowhere. I did forget to leave a link on the Talk:San Jose, California page, and did botch a sentence. I meant to type "I've now nominated the image for deletion". My bad. We all make mistakes, and mine were stupid.
2: I do not claim to be an expert, and certainly know that I am not. You are probably not an expert. I guess that very few Wikipedians are (within the context of the amount of Wikipedians) actually experts. Instead, Wikipedians pull together the knowledge that they have to put articles together. Not saying that you don't already know this.
3: I am not trying to make Wikipedia into a "Userbox-centric personal webhosting service". Yes, quite a lot of edits of mine have been to my Userpage and sub-Userpages, and Userboxes. But, I have not done only that. I have contributed to other articles. I am (just now as of today) a member of WikiProject Macintosh, so that I can contribute to Macintosh related articles, while collaborating with other Wikipedians. Yes, the Userboxes on my Userpage do contain statements. I feel that it is more convenient than elaborating on those views via text. You may disagree, and call that POV pushing, but you should not attack me for that.
4: I nominated the image for deletion because it is, and still is, Un Encylopedic. An image of a meerkat on a solid color background, no matter what the color, is unusable and inappropriate for presenting in the context of an image of a meerkat at a zoo. Because, people can't actually see it in the presented context. If the image originally had distracting shadows, why upload it? Why?

Image Tagging for Image:SanJoseMapWithLAFCOandCityLabelsandCA.png
editThanks for uploading Image:SanJoseMapWithLAFCOandCityLabelsandCA.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

editHi,
Your CSD or not page is interesting and a good idea; but I'm a bit wary about the sexual preferences subpage. This page can be found without going past the main CSD or not page (via Google, or through backlinks) and gives no context for its content; and is, of course, highly libellous if anyone were to take it seriously. I wonder if it might be a good idea to either rewrite this page as referring to a non-existent person, or clearly label it as being an example of abuse rather than an encyclopedia page? I realise that it's in userspace, but that only helps for people familiar with Wikipedia and the userspace concept. TSP 12:15, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Dumpster-non.JPG
editThanks for uploading Image:Dumpster-non.JPG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 03:21, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Image:Tom Statehouse inside-cropped.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Tom Statehouse inside-cropped.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oden 07:26, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Request from User:Vaoverland
editHi, Neil! I hope the world is treating you a little better than when we last coomunicated. Since moving to Grove, Virginia 18 months ago, I have been busy working on Wikipedia: WikiProject Virginia and several other projects, since earlier this year with User: No1lakersfan, partially in preparation and support of the Jamestown 2007 event. He is now a high school senior hoping to gain admittance to one of Virginia's public university for the Fall 2007 semester. Following advice, he has done maintenance and reference adding work, as well spending time on articles. He is a good collaborator and I believe he would enhance our efforts with WP as an administrator and use the additional tools and powers wisely. Since you know me from our past communications, I wanted to request that you consider entering a vote, hopefully in support, if you agree with my judgment and recommendation at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/No1lakersfan 2.
- Please feel free to communicate with me on my Talk page at User talk: Vaoverland if you have any questions or reservations. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season. Thanks, Mark in Historic Triangle of Virginia Vaoverland 23:21, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Dawsoncreeklogo.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Dawsoncreeklogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:56, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Murloc and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). Typo redirect List of individuals executed in arizona
editHello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on List of individuals executed in arizona, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because List of individuals executed in arizona is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting List of individuals executed in arizona, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Speedy deletion of Freak the Mighty
editA tag has been placed on Freak the Mighty, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Sittenfeld-prep.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Sittenfeld-prep.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:33, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:BibliotechaMural.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:BibliotechaMural.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. File permission problem with File:PeraltaAdobe-cropped.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:PeraltaAdobe-cropped.jpg.
If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. IngerAlHaosului (talk) 16:05, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

The article PC-Talk has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No sources cited, no reasonable claim of notability.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:26, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Franklin-McKinley School District
editA tag has been placed on Franklin-McKinley School District, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia for multiple reasons. Please see the page to see the reasons. If the page has since been deleted, you can ask me the reasons by leaving a message on my user talk page.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Jasper Deng (talk) 00:03, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivity
editFollowing a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. File:Multifunction-non.jpg needs authorship information
editThe media file you uploaded as File:Multifunction-non.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.
It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.
Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).
- If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:
{{subst:usernameexpand|Niteowlneils}}
will produce an appropriate expansion,
or use the {{own}} template.
- If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
File:MercuryCougar-non.jpg missing description details
editIf the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.
If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:04, 30 December 2011 (UTC)File:USGSlatlong.jpg listed for deletion

Sipke Ernst
editHi Niteowlneils, I gather you deleted Sipke Ernst on 23rd August 2005. I note he became a chess grandmaster in 2007 and has several existing links so I would like to create a stub. An excellent game of his was featured on chessgames.com today.
My main source will be http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=36626 though any site should have tournament details.

Deleted Page - "Peace Scouts of California"
editSir,
I am a journalist covering a story on the BSA and other groups. I would like to speak with you regarding your decision to remove the Peace Scouts of California's Wiki page. The reason given was that it was "pro gay, liberal, and not worthy of the words used". I would like to give you the opportunity to comment on your words so the record may adequately represent both sides of the issue.
You may contact me at ejcpromo AT yahoo DOT com
I thank you for your time in advance and look forward to our chat,

Notice of change
editHello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that you will not longer be able to request restoration of the tools because of your prior inactivity. You have until December 30, 2012 to request restoration or else the policy will prevent you from doing so in the future; you would need to seek a new WP:RFA. Until December 30, you can file a request at WP:BN for review by the crats. Thank you. MBisanz talk 04:22, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:OnSafariArtCar.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to File:OnSafariArtCar.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:18, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:PoolTablewithEquipment-non-lighter.jpg
editA tag has been placed on File:PoolTablewithEquipment-non-lighter.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ww2censor (talk) 21:39, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Ted Jones
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Ted Jones requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Gbawden (talk) 10:04, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

The article Megan Gray has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:49, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
