How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

  • The user group oversight will be renamed suppress in around 3 weeks. This will not affect the name shown to users and is simply a change in the technical name of the user group. The change is being made for technical reasons. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections.
  • The Reply Tool feature, which is a part of Discussion Tools, will be opt-out for everyone logged in or logged out starting 7 February 2022. Editors wishing to comment on this can do so in the relevant Village Pump discussion.

SEBS Degradation under domestic conditions?

edit

I appreciate this is a rather specific query, but were you aware of any published research concerning the medium-term stability of SEBS (Styrene-Ethylene-Butadiene-Styrene) based 'flexble' 'rubber' or elastic' based materials, or the likely causes which would lead to them becoming 'sticky' in storage?

I recently noted some 'tyres' that were part of a construction toy that had been in storage for an extended period, had developed a 'sticky' feeling, and from information on the original toy makers website, a SEBS based material seemed to be what the relevant components were most likely composed of.

I also noted the following on social media concerning 'sticky' tyres (these being from reddit don't necessarily meet WP:RS obviously) https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/24wpn2/lego_tires_turning_slimeysticky/ https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/9c38kf/sticky_and_oily_lego_rubber_tires/

The 'degrading' wasn't unexpected (as I've also had mouse scroll wheels go soft and sticky previously), but I'd like to try and confirm the cause of the 'stickiness' as being due to an external contaminant (such as finger grease), or environmental factor in storage (such as temperature, UV exposure, or atmosphere.)

You've been able to provide expertise on technical subjects before , hence this rather unusual direct enquiry, as opposed to asking at the Refdesk. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:27, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@ShakespeareFan00: Lots of research via Google Scholar but consensus seems to be photo oxidative and also oxidatively reactive to ozone. I'd be unsurprised if external factors (though maybe not contaminants) sped up the process by damaging the surface and increasing active sites for the oxidation process to occur. Nick (talk) 21:12, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. The other theories I had were:
  1. owing to nature of storage, that there had been an interaction between the SEBS based substance and some other plastic or material used in the construction toy stored with the tyres, such as a freezer or sandwich bag used. The items had been stored in a dark cupboard (albiet not climate controlled), although any photo-oxidation damage could have occurred prior to this. (I'm not sure where Ozone would have come from in a domestic environment, however.)
  2. That there had been low-level atmospheric exposure to an external containment present in a domestic environment, The toymakers advice was not to use bleach or corrosive detergents for cleaning, and I was sure I hadn't leaned these tyres with any such product before they went into storage.

Looks like I have some reading material to work through. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:35, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

What I also find suprising is that the ABS based items stored with the (suspected SEBS) items do not seem to have had any noticeable degradation effects. Perhaps the ABS based material is more stable in the medium-term? Anyway thanks for looking :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:57, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Account deletion

edit

Hi Nick,

You flagged several photos that I had permission of use. I refoxwarded the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I had 2 people on your platform (User: Athanenara) and (User: Praxidicae) cyber bully and vandalise my account based on this conversation three below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Athaenara#Deletion_-_Justin_Alliman

I was looking for context on the form of "unambiguous promotion" Athanenara spotted on this page and it went south from there with a misunderstanding on her end that I tried to reel back in.

Praxidicae‬ left a message a bit afterwards my your talk page in "‪August 2022‬".

This is your only warning; if you make personal attacks on others again, as you did at User talk:Athaenara, you may be blocked from editing without... She intentionally started to flag my uploads, to which I am now sending the OTRS for.

I am not sure if this is how ethics is treated on Wikipedia but I am deeply troubled by this. I saw you came into this as a 3rd party following her marking my photographers for violations falsely. Now my account is deleted, I have no way to combat this but I have forwarded over previous permissions for image use. Can you please remedy this situation as (User: Praxidicae) actions should go against vandalism rules and Wikipedia Policy for WikiBullying. BBoyNeptune06 (talk) 21:51, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

WikiBullying only appropriate path if unresolved is a class action lawsuit. I can't believe how toxic this platform has become with Administrators abusing people. It's like the inmates took over the prison.
This might cause someone to physically hurt themselves for mental aggression and cyber bullying. BBoyNeptune06 (talk) 21:58, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@BBoyNeptune06: This issue is now being discussed at one of the administrator noticeboards, as you have been informed of via your talk page. I would note that raising this issue on my talk page on English Wikipedia rather than your Commons talk page is not acceptable, the two projects have different administrators and comments you make here are not guaranteed to be viewed by my fellow Commons administrators, so I shall not be engaging further with you on my talk page here. Please continue your discussions on your own Commons talk page. Nick (talk) 22:07, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Facial Reconstruction retouched.jpg

edit

The file File:Facial Reconstruction retouched.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, low-res, no obvious use.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 07:39, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
