We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

Please don't

Upload images that you don't own and say you release the copy write for the image like you did [File:Coldlogospider.gif] and [File:John_Connolly_Live.jpg]. The first is owned by Cold the later being owned by Getty Images. This can get wikipedia sued for copywrite. Please don't do this anymore. However the cold image does qualify as fairuse. I now have to go through all your images and make sure they aren't copywrited.
