Train Stuff

edit

Hi there! Noticed your work on Miyagi train stations, and I really like your template (we should be able to remove the before/next stations afterwards) but two things.

1. The colors on the 'shoulders' of the template are different than the ones already used...do you have an official reason, or do you just like your colors better?

2. I don't particularly like the adding of ", Sendai" onto the ends of stations, as it's not what people will search for usually, particularly as there is only one Itstsubashi Station, for instance, which is in Sendai. I know this because a site like Jorudan [1] asks me to seperated on the stations that don't (say, Sendai to Atago (near Matsushima)). Would you be against changing them back?

Thanks for your work!

As for the moment, I've been using (Prefecture) as a disambiguation, as that's what's used on Jorudan, which is the way to check train schedules over here, in my not so humble opinion. User:Nameneko, who's also working in this area, suggested (Train Line). Personally, I think Prefecture is better, as that's easier to think about. You might not know whether Atago is on the Tōhoku Line or the ...er, whatever line the other one's on, but Miyagi and Chiba are easy to seperate.

Prefecture vs. Train Line and Other Stuff

edit

See? I think the exact opposite. I have a hard time knowing what train line I'm on, but prefecture is easy. I transfer based more on endpoints than line names, though. I know I have to go to Ichinoseki, then down to Sendai, for instance. Still, if both of you think so, I'll go along with that.

Something I did change was reversing the order of your Sendai Subway Line template. From Tokyo station outwards, please. That is a Japanese standard. :)

I do have Minami-Nagamachi and er, the one south of Atagobashi (Something-kara-machi?) pictures, and will do them soonish.

As for colors, we really should come up with a solid color scheme for Miyagi. The only one that I think is set is Orange for the Tōhoku, as Ueno has that color. The Shink is white too, I believe. Suggestions?

As for Adjecent Stations, as long as the current station is not linked in the Template, I don't think we really need that area, as it will be easy to look up.

Sendai Direction

edit

Hmm. I'm curious, when listed horizontally, is Izumi-Chou on the left? That would indicate Tomizawa should be first, as reading order is reversed. I seem to remember Izumi being on the left when I've taken the subway, but I might be wrong... -William McDuff 04:35, 18 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Right. Which is meant for Japanese readers, chiefly, who read down, then left. So shouldn't it be flipped for English readers that read right, then down? :) -William McDuff 07:29, 18 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Article titles and macrons

edit

The discussion about article titles and macrons at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles) has not reached a conclusion. Please do not rename articles until that debate ends. Thanks Fg2 12:13, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Komachi rebuttal

edit

I will not doubt the assessment that the name derives from a certain person, especially if the Japanese article states so. I derived my information from this website http://www.h2.dion.ne.jp/~dajf/byunbyun/service.htm#akita, as well as confirming the meaning of "komachi" in my own dictionaries. Perhaps a revision of the article could state that the train name comes from ja:小野小町 but has a double meaning of "belle" or "beauty". Akira742 18:45, 2 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

The change sounds perfectly fine to me. I'm sure you and your coworkers know much more on the subject than I do. Akira742 04:42, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yamanote map template

I like the circle, and the color. I use Excel at the office to make floor plans and it can be tough to make circles fit in squares.Vincent 01:34, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David Mertz

edit

I saw your AfD vot for Simson Garfinkel. While he is of somewhat greater noteriety than I (David Mertz) am, there seems to be a common weird bias against academics/computer writers (but a porn actor or indy band of 1/20th the influence is automatically kept). If you feel like voting, thanks. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 17:18, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the stub link. I was actually unaware of the full list of stub categories ! Never too late to learn :) Shyamal 14:55, 15 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

New Japanese City Template

edit

I've created a new template for Japanese cities based off of Template:Infobox City but reformatted similar to the current one. See the example I put up at Sendai, Miyagi and put feedback either on my user talk page or the template talk page. Please don't use this template as it is currently a test and has not been approved as a replacement by anyone. Thanks!

Also, I'm going to try to do another round of (broken) translating for the Sendai article sometime soon. I sent it to peer review about a month ago but I didn't get much of a response, though the only one was helpful. Hopefully after the entire article has been translated from the ja.wikipedia one, put through a good copyedit or two, and given a number of references and external links, we can send it back to peer review and, if the outlook is good, nominate it for FA status!

Streets

edit

I saw your note on User:Peter Konneckes page, and thought that I'd copy you in on what I said on his page. I was thinking that an article that gave a list of streets in a suburb. For instance, we could have list of streets in Strathfield and have an entry something like this:

  • Redmyre Street: the name originally came from the original Redmyre Estate that existed before Strathfield was proclaimed (see the birth of Strathfield). The street was named by such and such on such and such date

I know this would be invaluable for the site, and a great source of information (I've always wondered how some streets got their names, and figure that Wikipedia would be a great place to put this information). What do you think? - Ta bu shi da yu 11:38, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Aoi

edit

hello Neier,

not sure I could be mistaken, because I took that kanji from Aoi no Ue. Are there multiple ways for writing Aoi? Feel free to correct/add anything that could lead to the truth. Gryffindor 12:45, 24 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well I am totally confused now because I always thought the name Aoi and Aoi no Ue was related to the colour and the flower at the same time. Since the en. Wikipedia only lists "Aoi", I think we can add the colour and flower and explain the difference (amongst other "aoi" if there are more than two). Taking out the links from each other is maybe not such a good idea, because someone who is not familiar with kanji might not understand the difference? Besides, the chapter in Genji monogatari is named Aoi, which I was planning on expanding at some later point. That's why I tagged it as a stub. I mean feel free to correct anything, however be aware that at some point maybe an article about the "Aoi" chapter will appear. Which leads me now to question after what was it named, are you familiar with Genji? Maybe better to ask a user who is a total expert on this. Gryffindor 17:33, 24 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Fascinating, soudesuka... I didn't even know about this page in the ja. Wikipedia, chou benri da. Yes, feel free to clarifiy, domou.. Gryffindor 11:24, 25 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Finalizing the New Japanese city tempalte

edit

After an amount of time, I am bringing up the template for some general approval for finalization for the template. Because of the current Template:Japanese city, the finalized template will more than likely be called Template:Japan city or simply keep the name. If you know anyone who could contribute valuable input, please tell them! Thanks! -Nameneko 07:07, 5 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

The spooky thing is, I almost left you message here pointing out your mistake, and then I thought "Eh, why bother" and hit "cancel". And then less then two minutes later you leave a message on my talk page! --Angr/tɔk mi 23:14, 5 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Any classification is useful, if sticks to some conventions. History is primarily about events. Otherwise we could put all things into "history", since everything definitely has history. It is infortunate that Category:Japan-related stubs has too few subcategories. But you don't was to make Category:Japanese history stubs just as big as Category:Japan-related stubs, do you? mikka (t) 00:11, 6 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
