URLs

Hello NealeFamily, hope things are well in Nelson. I enjoy seeing all the content that you add. Like me, you get much of it from PapersPast. I'm just a bit puzzled why you don't record the URLs with your referencing? I've commented on that before. Let me know if you want a hand or a more detailed explanation. John Jarvis (karateka)

Hi there,

My name is Warren Jarvis and I'm John Jarvis' son. I'm very surprised to learn that John's Wikipedia page has been disabled due(from reading discussions)to a lack of independent sources/references.

Your note on 26 June 2013 is quite correct - John does have some claims to fame, being noted as one of NZ's most qualified karate teachers. John founded the NZ Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts in 1968 when he split from the Kyokushinkai group:

Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://karate-newplymouth.webweka.com/ Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/martial-arts/page-3 Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.ozmaforums.host56.com/Forums/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=413

Re John's achievement with the 100 man kumite (Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.karategyor.hu/karate/100el/angol.html) - i believe this is indeed notable achievement given that he was the first foreigner to ever complete the 100 man fight in Japan (Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.iogkf.com/newsletter/edition_2009_1/profiles_jroses_au.htm).

Any assistance you can provide with reestablishing John's page would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if I can assist in anyway.

Thanks & kind regards,

Warren Jarvis

The primary weakness with the article is the lack of non-specialised coverage. What I mean is, you will need to find articles about him from major national or international newsmedia (DomPost, NZ Herald for example). There was a brief discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Martial arts/archive 17#John Jarvis (karateka) which points to this need. Also take a look at the notability guidelines WP:GNG.
I did a Google search at the time the article came up for deletion, but could not find any strong supporting evidence outside the NZ Karate pages. It would have been useful if the Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/martial-arts/page-3 had mentioned him specifically.
On another issue, where you are directly related to the person you need to adhere to WP:COI. You will see there are various suggested ways in which you can approach this. I am happy to assist.
Also (sorry this seems never ending) you might like to create a user login, because I am unsure if you will see this because you have no talk page. NealeFamily (talk) 20:28, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I can view by visiting your talk page.

Re the lack of non-specialised coverage – does the lack of non-specialised coverage alone warrant the deletion of an article? Interestingly I visited Loek Hollander’s article Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loek_Hollander#cite_note-3 who was the fourth person ever to complete the 100-man kumite. There are no references to major national or international news media articles. There is also the following comment on the articles talk page “Loek Hollander is a prominent karateka of 8th dan. He passed the 100-man kumite. This fact alone makes him significant enough to start a stub at Wikipedia. There are only 16 people who completed this test in recent 40-45 years”. It appears to me that policy/guidelines are being interpreted and applied inconsistently? Or is Loek Hollander’s article also breaching policy/guidelines?

Please also note that John is actually specifically mentioned on Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/martial-arts/page-3 (“The Rembuden Institute of Martial Arts, founded by John Jarvis in 1968, had over 3,000 karate students in 25 clubs throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific by the mid-1970s.”)

I appreciate and understand policy around conflict of interest. Any assistance you can provide to ensure I’m not in breach would be greatly appreciated. My email address is wal_mel@vodafone.co.nz. Correspondence via email might be easier if you prefer.

210.246.62.104 (talk) 07:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Warren - Loek Hollander has, what appears to be, international coverage of his achievement. Although the article may be challenged under WP:GNG if the comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Martial arts/archive 17#John Jarvis (karateka) are anything to go by. Another way around it would be to include a section on John in a more general article about martial arts in New Zealand along the lines of Yoshukai Karate#Yoshukai Karate organizations#Yoshukai Australasia.
Did John compete at any international events such as Commonwealth Games or Olympics? That could also help raise his status.
I have moved the article into my sandbox - User:NealeFamily/sandbox#John Jarvis (karateka) so you can add any information or references that may be useful NealeFamily (talk) 20:05, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi there,

John didn't compete at any international events such as Commonwealth Games or Olympics - however he was inducted into the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2000 Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://www.samurai-arts.co.nz/NZMAHOF%20Past%20Inductees.htm. Thanks for moving the article into you sandbox for editing. Will add any information or references that may be useful. I am however struggling to work out how to add a reference. Is there a link you can provide that outlines how do this?

Thanks,

Warren 210.246.62.104 (talk) 06:41, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

For information on citing references see WP:Cite and for reliable (or valid) sources see WP:RS. The article would be strengthened if you use national or international newspapers as references. NealeFamily (talk) 20:24, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Assessment of Waves (band) article

Hi NealeFamily, I know that in the greater scheme of things this isn't a huge deal, but I'm wondering if you could explain your justification for rating the Waves (band) article "start" class. That rating indicates that:

  • The article is "weak in many areas, usually in referencing." The article's citations include a book, a widely-distributed magazine and two New Zealand newspapers.
  • "Quality of the prose may be distinctly unencyclopedic." It is well-written, grammatically correct and with editorial balance.
  • " ... and MoS compliance non-existent." Conforms completely to Wikipedia MoS, including article structure and infobox.
  • " ... but the article should satisfy fundamental content policies, such as BLP." The article adheres to BLP requirements.
  • "... and provide enough sources to establish verifiability." They're there, complete with page numbers and online links.
  • "The article also needs substantial improvement in content and organisation." It covers the formation, recording career, breakup and revival of the band. It includes a discography and infobox naming the years active and current and past members.

Are there any suggestions you could make, or important ommissions you could point out on content that needs to be added? My own view is that the article easily achieves C class. But I'm interested in your view on how it fails all those criteria listed above. Thanks. BlackCab (talk) 03:52, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz gmail.com. Proposed deletion of Evolocity

The article Evolocity has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable. No evidence of in depth coverage in independent third party sources.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Yes I am having trouble with them - I seem to end up with links that are (not sure of the correct term) short term. Is there something I am missing. The guideline I found was confusing to me. NealeFamily (talk) 03:11, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Ah, good. Let's work through it together. I take the first reference from the Otago Witness with the headline "Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands". I searched PapersPast and the address given to me in full is as follows: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OW18650603.2.30&srpos=1&e=03-06-1865-03-06-1865--10-OW-1--on--2supposed+loss-- Much of the latter part is redundant; what we need is the part to the left of "&srpos". That is, the URL of interest is the following: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OW18650603.2.30 On PapersPast, the last bit of relevance is always an identifier for the newspaper (i.e. in this case, "OW" obviously stands for Otago Witness), followed by the page ID number.
Now that we have found the URL, let's look at the reference that you produced: <ref>Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands, Otago Witness, Volume 03, Issue 705, 3 June 1865, Page 11</ref>
I suggest that it's most useful to have the title of the referenced hyperlinked to the online source. Wikipedia creates hyperlinks by using single square brackets in the following way:[URL space title] In this case, it would be:[http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OW18650603.2.30 Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands] This produces the following hyperlinked title: Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands
Ok, let's slot this into your reference: <ref>[http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OW18650603.2.30 Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands], Otago Witness, Volume 03, Issue 705, 3 June 1865, Page 11</ref> This produces the following reference:[1]
  1. ^ Supposed loss of the SS City of Dunedin and of all hands, Otago Witness, Volume 03, Issue 705, 3 June 1865, Page 11
So in summary, it's about identifying what the URL to use is, and adding that URL to the references that you produce already, and enclosing that URL and the reference title in single square brackets. Clear as mud? Schwede66 03:31, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. If you have a few minutes, please visit the testing page for simple instructions on how to try this new tool. Regards, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:47, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

New Zealand tsunamis

Hi NealeFamily, I just wanted to explain why I reverted your additions of that category. I checked to be sure with the NOAA database and they show only possible minor or disputed tsunamis for the three earthquakes: 1848 Marlborough, 1929 Murchison & 1931 Hawke's Bay. Hi Red Pen of Doom - I'm an individual user, not a collective. But, if the names a problem I'm happy to think up an alternative - maybe just drop it back to Neale? NealeFamily (talk) 01:33, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Tsunamis affecting New Zealand, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Otaki and Maori. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I've taken the page protection off, but I've left "pending changes review" on. Since you've been around for several years already, that won't affect your ability to edit the article at all — it will just mean that if some newbie like Cody777 comes along again, their edits won't go into the article right away but will have to be approved or rejected by somebody first. So that makes it much easier to help control for vandalism. I also took a quick peek at your sandbox page first, and you've done some really good work there at getting the article up to snuff — so thanks and bravo. Bearcat (talk) 01:41, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Burnside High School

Hello! I am working on the russian version "Burnside High School" article, which currently has short history section in wikipedia. I am writing you to ask - is there a possibility for you to visit a National Library at Welligton and obtain an electronic copy of book "Choosing the right path : Burnside High School 1960-2010 / Paul O'Connor" (http://natlib.govt.nz/records/21643829), and put some information into the article? Also I can buy a hard copy of that book. Could you give me an advice, if it's possible? I'll be happy to get any version and any part of that book. Thank you for your time, --Voyagerim (talk) 13:26, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Kit car may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s and 2 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Archibald Baxter

Hi Mountdrayton - thanks for your recent edits, they improved the readibility. Just one query, you changed the sentence from On 21 March Baxter and William Little, another objector, refused to put on detention clothing to .. refused to put on Army uniform. The source for the detention clothing was Objectors on trial, Dominion, Volume 10, Issue 3044, 3 April 1917, Page 8. Is there some evidence to the contrary?. Regards NealeFamily (talk) 21:33, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your compliments. Thanks also for the Dominion cutting, which is the first time I have ever seen the ordinary press covering a routine court-martial of conscientious objectors in such minute detail. In Britain in WW1, although tribunals and civilian courts were often reported, courts-martial were rarely covered, let alone with full listing of all present and verbatim exchanges between the president and accused - fascinating contrast between the human will to live and military incomprehension.

As to the facts, I was puzzled by the Wikipedia reference to detention clothing, since in the British armed forces, on which the NZ forces were closely modelled, there was no tradition of special 'detention clothing', detainees being required to wear the workaday version of their standard issue uniform, commonly known in the army as 'fatigues'. or in the navy, 'No 8s'. Perhaps to demonstrate their new-found independence, the NZ army seems to have devised 'detention clothing' - small things please little minds, and there is nothing smaller than the military mind.

However, what was not disclosed at the court-martial, and therefore not reported by the press, was that all the COs had, from their initial arrest, refused to wear military uniform of any kind, so the refusal of detention clothing was not because it was 'detention clothing' but because it was military uniform. If, by some odd chance, they had been ordered to put on full dress uniform for a Sovereign's Parade, and had refused that, the point would still be that it was military uniform, not that it was full dress.

If one were writing a book, the charge could be explained in detail, and the significance for the COs could be explained in detail, but to short-cut by quoting only the charge of refusing detention clothing gave an entirely erroneous impression for the ordinary reader that the objection was to detention clothing per se, and by extension that if only they had been allowed to wear ordinary uniform they would have been perfectly happy and not disobeyed - a total travesty of the true facts.

Therefore I took the view that the best and simplest course was to stress that it was military clothing to which the COs were objecting, rather than the purely incidental fact that on this particular occasion it happened to be detention clothing.

I hope that this makes sense, and is acceptable. Mountdrayton (talk) 23:44, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
