2/12/15 Assessment

I am a little behind for my wikipedia research, but I'm doing good in terms of assignments. I have not found any sources yet because I'm not sure what to research yet. Ive looked into different articles for wikipedia, and I'm thinking about what topic to research. I was thinking of looking into a concept that is evil, and explaining it somehow. Maybe slavery.

Today I began to narrow down potential subjects of discussion for the upcoming project. I was thinking of researching slavery in early America, and how Americans were able to justify systematic oppression of minority groups (specifically blacks). I find the subject interesting, and I want to look into the contrasting ethical value systems in America. Essentially why was there slavery, and how could anyone consider these terrible acts ethical? If anyone has other ideas or info relating to the subject feel free to comment (especially history majors, that would be wonderful). I still need to do more research to see if this is a good topic.

I have decided that slavery in america is too big of a topic to tackle. I was hoping there would be more research done on the philosophy of it slavery. It does have to do with philosophy, but it would require too much research and digging. I don't think I am prepared to do that considering this is my first philosophy class. Instead I will be looking at Aristotle and his views on slavery. It is a much more focused topic, and it is also very interesting and controversial.

Im doing good in terms of wikipedia assignments. I have selected the topic of "natural slavery" for my wikipedia article. I have also let the editors know that I will be working on the page for an academic assignment. Ive sone some research on academic search premier and found a great article breaking down and explaining the context and meaning behind Aristotle's concept of natural slavery.

After lots of research and scrapping ideas, I decided to edit the "Natural Slavery" wiki page. I think it will be interesting to explore Aristotle's view points on slavery "by nature" and possibly discuss and critique his view points on the topic. I hope that with some good information and citations I can make a big contribution to the wiki page.

2/26/15 Assessment

I think I'm doing good in terms of wikipedia assignments. Research wise, I found the book "Politics" by Aristotle. It is the main source that I will be referencing for my wikipedia article. The articles term "natural slavery" actually comes from Aristotle's Politics, when he describes the characteristics, roles, and reactions of a natural slave in Greek society. This should be a good staring point for constructing my draft and doing research.

I am doing ok in comparison to the assignments for week 7. My proposal is written for editing the "Natural Slavery" wikipedia article. In my proposal I have broken down what I want to do in terms of editing and how id like to address Aristotle's work, especially his book "Politics". The proposal is in my sandbox talk page.

My status is fairly good compared to the wikipedia assignments for this week. I looked at my classmates progress so far and decided who's work I'm going to critique. The assignments for this week aren't too dense, so it is a good opportunity for research given the extra time. Academic search premier has provided a good amount of information to work with for my editing assignment. I found a few articles having to do with Aristotle and natural slavery.

3/26/15 Assessment

I am doing good in terms of status for the wikipedia assignments. I started writing out on paper an outline for the rough draft. I will be editing the wikipedia page for natural slavery, and the draft will be based on Aristotle's "Politics" along with other modern philosophers critiques of the book. Im am now just finding a way to incorporate these ideas into the wikipedia article smoothly, right now my thoughts are a little too scattered. The rough draft will be posted under my "sandbox-talk" page.

Tried to look into Aristotle and his views on slavery more through csuci's psychology database. While using PSYCHinfo, i found a critique that talks about Aristotle and his views on slavery as well as women and breeding. It also talks about human beings and their nature for progression, and the author heavily critiques Aristotles "Politics" for his beliefs. Good modern insight on the subject.

4/2/15 Assessment

Based on my research log, my status is decent in terms of wikipedia assignments due. I have not had much time to do personal research for my wikipedia topic and rough draft. I have been spending more time just constructing a rough draft that is well written and filled with substantial information. Ive also done a peer review for 2 other classmates and their progress for wikipedia. I think my reviews were concise and helpful.

4/9/15 Assessment

Based on my research log, I think I am in a good position compared to the week 11 assignments. I have peer reviewed my partners proposal for wikipedia in depth. My partner doesn't have a full rough draft yet for their wikipedia assignment, so there wasn't a lot to talk about. But I tried to offer the best advice I could when it comes to getting ideas for a rough draft and proposal. Still waiting for some type of review for my rough draft in my sandbox talk page. Ive also done some new research related to my topic for this week.

4/16/15 Assessment

Im moving at a rather slow pace for this weeks wikipedia assignments. I have been keeping up to date with my wikipedia stuff, and I critiqued another classmates article proposal for wikipedia. No one has critiqued my wikipedia article yet besides Professor Balen. Other than that, I have just been staying up to date and not getting to far behind. No extensive research done, just reviewing past materials and shaping them.

4/23/15/ Assessment

Im in a good position for this weeks wikipedia assignments. Research has been slow for me this week, mainly because I have been focusing on the articles I already have selected. I have been crafting a new revised draft for wikipedia, and I plan on posting that within the next few days. The main focus right now is shaping information I have and girding it down to the bare essentials for wikipedia readers to understand clearly. I have mostly been looking at Karbowski's work.

Progress Review

Your proposal looks well researched and it appears that you've already begun reading your references. I would encourage you to find a few more sources. I generally shoot for five as a minimum. In the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, there is a section on Aristotle's Political Theory which discusses his view on slavery which might be of use to you. Remember at this point that you should have a section in your sandbox which you are editing. Over all though, nice work. Keep it up.

Suggestions include moving much of what you have in your "abstract" to a more formal annotation of the sources you have in your bibliography and keeping the abstract more concise. Nice work on getting the research log started and good start on the draft, Nate. Be sure to edit the draft per our discussion in class. Dense quotes need to be broken into bits and contextualized for your reader. You will want to detail out the research log a bit more and, perhaps, a few more scholarly sources.
