CBR at RegisterFly

edit

You need to google the titles of all the CBR articles preferably inside the CBR site; they have moved the content around, e.g. the first article cited is now at www.cbronline.com/news/icann_ponders_registrar_crackdown. Then you need to file a quest with the list of new/working URLs at MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist. Otherwise sooner or later a busy body will come and remove all those references entirely. Hope this helps. Someone not using his real name (talk) 19:51, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Banc de Binary

edit

Hello, thanks for suggesting rollback on the Banc de Binary page, it's been whitewashed by CorporateM, a paid for editor. Is there anything that can be done about these kinds of users and their huge text editing?HistorianofRecenttimes (talk) 11:38, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding unreferenced or poorly referenced biographical content, especially if controversial, to articles or any other Wikipedia page, as you did at Talk:Banc De Binary. Content of this nature could be regarded as defamatory and is in violation of Wikipedia policy. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Evidence. Okteriel (talk) 08:16, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
That Banc de Binary violated US law is clearly established. SEC litigation release: [1]. CFTC litigation release: [2]. Wall Street Journal article.[3]. Banc de Binary admitting their press release claiming CFTC clearance was "inaccurate": [4]. Banc de Binary agreed to stay out of the US, and the SEC and CFTC didn't take the matter further. John Nagle (talk) 18:54, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Okteriel was just blocked as a sockpuppet, so I wouldn't worry about his nonsense. I reverted his edit of your talk page comment as soon as I saw it. Coretheapple (talk) 20:24, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I know that things have been getting a bit heated with the Banc de Binary situation. I just wanted to reach out to you about this comment. While such comments may seem to be directed at an organization, we have to remember that sometimes individuals of these organizations could take it as a bit of a personal attack towards themselves. I think it might be best to focus on the content and not make comments towards the contributors. Hopefully we can all be mindful of what we say so that we can have a nice, civil discussion. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to working with you and everyone else in improving the article. Mike VTalk 05:21, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

That particular issue has already been hashed out on WP:ANI. The consensus was that it's not an unreasonable statement given their record with regulatory agencies. John Nagle (talk) 06:01, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't think I could agree that there was a consensus formed on ANI that such comments were appropriate. Regardless, a discussion at ANI does not supersede one of the core principles of this project. All I'm asking is that we all refrain from any name calling and focus on building an article. Mike VTalk 17:51, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Read this new CFTC litigation release.[5] Any questions left about this not being an illegal operation? John Nagle (talk) 18:25, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I did see it and for the time being the most important point to note is that the article states "alleged violations". Until it has been proven in a court of law, the actions of the company shouldn't be deemed "illegal". Over time, the court matters will be finalized and more conclusive statements can be made. Remember, Wikipedia is first and foremost an encyclopedia, not a news source or the "court of public opinion". There's no deadline and there is no need to rush to any conclusions before due process has been done. Mike VTalk 19:48, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
True. We can also cite BdB's reply in court, if you can find it. The current issue in that case is that the court has ordered Oren Laurent to come to Washington DC for a deposition. His lawyers are fighting that. But he's a US citizen, and, as the court points, out, if you're a US citizen, you have to come when the courts call. That will be interesting. John Nagle (talk) 20:59, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Regards, Nagle, and Mike V. Based on your discussion above, I wonder if you could discuss the validity of Nagle's statement in a new Incidents thread, "The CFTC told them in 2013 they were operating illegally in the US", as it appears to be relevant.
I must confess that I do not want to believe that some concern has set itself up to perpetuate in Wikipedia talkpages the rumor that BDB has committed criminal acts, recognizing not only Wikipedia's influence in public opinion, but also the influence of Wikipedia talkpage rumors upon Wikipedians who then shape public opinion. But the more evidence I am shown that there exists a coordinated effort to spread false rumors of our lawlessness on Wikipedia talkpages, the more I tend to view the hypothesis credible. BDBIsrael (talk) 21:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
We're well beyond rumor. BdB is in Federal court. Anyway, this belongs at Talk:Banc de Binary. John Nagle (talk) 22:00, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
User:TParis has convinced me that Nagle's statement is borderline rather than clearly a violation. However, the issue of coordinated effort to spread rumors is not a matter for the article talkpage. Suffice. BDBIsrael (talk) 22:10, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi again John. If you have not seen, I updated my Heritage Action draft to incorporate one of the sources you provided. I would still like to take a little time reviewing the other three, so if there is specific information from those sources you would like included in my draft please let me know.

I also want to respond more specifically to your comment from both Talk:Heritage Action and COIN that updating a full article in this fashion is frowned upon by Wikipedia. I understand that it is a large undertaking, but in an interview for the Signpost Jimbo Wales says the following about COI editors:

You are free to enter into a dialogue with the community on talk pages, and to suggest edits or even complete new articles or versions of articles by posting them in your user space.

Again, I do understand that I'm asking a lot from volunteer editors, and if you feel that you simply don't have time, that's totally fine—I'll continue to reach out to others and see if they might have some time to help. Thanks, Morzabeth (talk) 21:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Carmine Miranda

edit

Hie, While i appreciate the edits you made on this article Carmine Miranda, there was no call to state that the Distinguished Award is the lowest awards as if makes it any less notable than the Grand Prize. While it is indeed not the Grand Prize, your statement becomes an expression of opinion as opposed to just stating the fact that he received this awards. Could you please revise your edit so it doesn't detract from the fact that Carmine was awarded a Distinguished Musician Award at one of the most competitive classical music competitions in the world. Thank you Lilianarice (talk) 21:20, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

The organization does not call the Distinguished Musician category an "award". Nor was there a "special mention". So it's a "category of recognition", rather than an "award". The IBLA Grand Prize is a big deal; the winner gets to play at Carnegie Hall. This is three levels down from that. John Nagle (talk) 21:38, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

NQ Mobile Inc

edit

You took out all the products and this is the second time someone removed a bunch of stuff. When I started there was a product list and I just tried to add some of the new products. In addition I did a lot of reading before putting up just a few products as highlights but from what I read you've missed the mark entirely.

NQ Mobile is a holding company and has nearly a dozen subsidiaries all revolving around mobile. The tiny little bit you've written while removing the info on some of their actual products is discouraging to say the least.

Additionally, I don't understand why the need to try to clarify that they are not a cell phone carrier as there are many different types of mobile devices and anyone who confuse internet services with carriers probably needs to read more than the first line of the webpage.

Hnancy (talk) 05:24, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Hello I am Hnancy and I am currently editing the link building page. Someone mentioned that I made an ad for a SEO book which is totally unacceptable to me. I am currently an informatics student at UW and it is really my project to improve the contents of a wikipedia page. I never heard of the Moz company before that the only reason I used their resource is that I thought it was a published article that has good value. I used searchenginejournal because it has the similar resource I needed. (I didn't realize it has backlins to Moz?) By now I couldn't turn in my homework in time as I didn't improve the contents a lot. I am new to wikipedia editing team and I accept recommendations from other editors with respect. I am now editing the conflicts section and I want to add a new section called "link building tactics" to briefly mention some common strategies of link building.Reply

"Nagle's Algorith", can it handle length>65535?

edit

Can Nagle's Algorithm handle packets of total length >65535? (cause it would be easy to support in theory, eg, if a packet is exactly 65535 then FFFF ~data~ 0000 , or if a packet is >65535 then (for 65536): FFFF ~data1~ 01 00 ~data2~~ , which could continue forever until a non-FFFF is reached or until 0000 is reached, but im just theorizing, i don't know how it _ACTUALLY_ works :o ) Divinity76 (talk) 00:58, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

The maximum possible length for an IP datagram is 65535 bytes, because the size field in the IP header, for both IPv4 and IPv6, is only 16 bits. John Nagle (talk) 06:52, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Charlie Hebdo

edit

Sir thank you for your response. However my contention is that the Porte de Vincennes killings are not visible. It is incorrect to write that Ile de France is the parent: it is clearly the child to Charlie Hebdo Shooting. A proper course of action would mention the anti Semitic killings in 1 line in the introduction and then indicate that Porte de Vincennes is covered in Ile de France sub section. At present there is no connection between the two and, rather shamefully, these killings are not referenced. This has nothing to do with what the other editor termed "political ideology". Facts are facts and here the causation is obscured. Thank you. Feel free to email you will find my details on the bottom of the formerly linked article — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adam Blitz (talkcontribs)

Try commenting on Talk:2015 Île-de-France attacks. There's some disagreement there about the relationship between the articles, and which incidents are connected. Articles about current events are written as the events happen, and sometimes a look back can improve the structure. Look for reliable sources (see WP:RS), not your own blog. Landmark now at AE

Recently you referred a dispute involving Landmark Worldwide to ANI. I have no idea if you might be involved, but I'm assuming you know something, at least. Since we now have a related complaint at WP:AE#Astynax, perhaps you can comment. Or give links to prior discussions if you know of any. So far I can recognize some people who appear to be defending Landmark (or at least, are protective of their reputation) and others who are more keen on including criticism. It would help to find regular WP editors who just came across the issue. There was an arb case but it seems to be light on specific findings. Banc de binary and Terms of Use

edit

Hi John. I was intrigued by this comment, where you attributed the change in the ToU to the Banc de Binary affair. I have been living in a story (apparently wrong?) that the change came after the community tried and failed 3 and a half times to ban paid editing following the WIki-PR affair. The last half-hearted attempt was closed in December 2013 (see Wikipedia_talk:Conflict_of_interest_limit) but by early November it was clear that they were all failing. WMF sent the (weakly based) cease and desist letter in mid-November 2013... by the next summer the change in the ToU came out and I always assumed it was to give the Cease and Desist Letter a stronger basis. I had no clue how the BdB affair played in. Can you tell me the story as you see it, with BdB in it? Or is that story already toward somewhere you could point me to? The things I am ignorant of never cease to amaze me. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

See this Wall Street Journal article.[7]. When Banc de Binary offered $10,000 on eLance to anyone who could make their problems on Wikipedia go away, that pushed the COI issue over the top. BdB was and is in big trouble with the US SEC and CFTC and a Federal court, and BdB was desperately trying to keep that info out of Wikipedia. See also the AN/I discussions.[8][9]. John Nagle (talk) 20:07, 13 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
hm! Thanks! I think the extensive discussion they reference was our (failed) efforts to ban paid editing that stemmed from WIki-PR, no? I totally hear you on the BdB element tho - $10K wow! that is over the top. Jytdog (talk) 00:33, 14 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

BankBazaar

Howdy, John. I removed your material here. It seems that the article is commenting that Amazon is "in talks" and that the reporter couldn't even confirm that. Most likely, they're confused with Series C funding lead by Amazon India. Happy to self-revert if there's a better source. Still not sure about the notability there; last time I reviewed it (they spam/SEO often and frequently), I didn't feel the need to AFD. Will read up later and weigh in. Kuru (talk) 23:19, 27 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're probably right. Let's wait out the AfD, and if it stays around, try to figure out what the press coverage says. John Nagle (talk) 05:32, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll need to spend more time on it. This firm devotes quite a bit of energy and resources to SEO/PR, which I suppose is natural for a developing entity going through the funding cruicible. My initial impression is that much of the coverage is adapted from press releases and gobbled up by the very lightweight "reporters" that cover this segment, but there's likely a notable firm here if we could just find something more than just the normal funding hype. I'll admit that their frequent spamming has made me very hesitant to devote time to this. Kuru (talk) 15:47, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Right. There's a pattern of COI editing, but the business seems marginally notable. Marginally. Notability under WP:CORP is a "maybe" here. They're a funded, operating startup on the way up. One could argue "come back when you grow up", per WP:CRYSTAL. Or keep the article and trim the hype. Let's see how the AfD goes. John Nagle (talk) 17:53, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
