User name concern

edit

I just saw your message on the help desk. I have some concern about your user name in view of your recent edit to New Media Strategies and the article on Pete Snyder that you are about to move to the mainspace. The "NMS" part of your user name could, in light of these edits, be seen as promotional and not in accordance with WP's user name policy.  – ukexpat (talk) 18:26, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your quick response. You have dealt with my concerns. Thank you. – ukexpat (talk) 18:44, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

COI template

edit

Hi - I *think* but don't quote me that one of the uses for the COI template is just to *signal* to other people that someone who has contributed to the article has a COI - I don't think it automatically means it's a negative slur. I'll check over the article and see what we can do. --Cameron Scott (talk) 22:50, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I see no problem with your conduct in this matter - we do have a problem with people with COI adding slushy articles *but* it's lead to a situation where people such as yourself who (as far as I can see) are acting in good faith and working with other editors to produce a quality article are tarred with the same brush. I've reviewed the article and I cannot find any major problems with it. I'll be leaving a note on it shortly to that effect. --Cameron Scott (talk) 22:57, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looks like things are in hand but I thought I'd let you know how it was eventually done.
The first thing that needs checking is if the COI banner was added when a combination of notable wikipedians/NPOV tags would work better - this should after all only be used to flag articles that have genuine problems not just to show that someone connected once edited the page (as there is no way to fix that, this side of inventing a time machine and killing your grandfather and we know how that time paradox works out). The problem is that if you have been closely involved with the page it can be difficult to judge things properly. So you can start a discussion amongst editors and invite other independent editors in - this is pretty much what we did here: Talk:Catherine Yronwode#Removing the COI banner. As no one could really see a problem some quick editing was done and the consensus was it was fine.
Although it doesn't count in your case next it is worth "diffing" the current version against the one the COI party edited and if there have been major changes then the article may not even resemble the earlier one, see e.g. this.
Next is to see if you can find someone who can give the page a solid edit and often expanding and rewriting pretty much erases COI material, as was done here.
So basically find an editor who will look it over and edit out the problematic material if needed and if they are happy it complies then they can remove the tag. There isn't anything that says "thou shalt not edit articles you are connected with" (except where COI might external links and there is no wiggle room) but people need to be aware of the guidelines and stick to the general principles everyone has to (after all fans can easily break NPOV in their enthusiasm). It can often be beneficial to have some input from the people involved as they can supply a photo, clarify points and provide press coverage - all of which can help improve the article. The problem comes when someone tries to hammer in some PR-style corporate puffery (and often put up a fight to try and keep it in). You seem to have kept an eye on the guidelines and have sought extra input to help resolve the issue when it arose, which is exactly the right way to go about this. I've looked over the two articles and there don't seem to be any major problems - if Cameron is happy to take the lead in this then that is fine by me and I'll cast an eye over then once he is done, just to make sure there is anything else to tweak. It is early days for the article and any wrinkles would have been smoothed out over time anyway, but this should fast-track the process.
After all there are some articles heavily edited by non-COI individuals which, somehow, manage to turn out far more problematic (see e.g. Radical Comics - I am almost stumped on how to "improve" that and tweaking won't do, it might be I have to remove everything I didn't add, which is drastic) and there are always better and more specific tags to use that address the actual issues which then make it easier to fix the problems. (Emperor (talk) 01:46, 8 December 2008 (UTC))Reply
Its a mindfield - all you can do is be as transparent as possible and do take all the steps you can but it is always possible someone will raise concerns (and such thimgs does make other editors... nervous). All you can do is what you've done - back off and find independent editors to check it over. It is part of the checks and balances, so it is best to make sure everything is OK - that way your back is covered and things can keep moving forward. Orphaned non-free media (File:Jonas Brothers The 3D Concert Experience (poster).jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Jonas Brothers The 3D Concert Experience (poster).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:14, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alright, figures. I should probably have read the source I found more carefully.   I'll let you get on with improving the article, anyway. Also, just as a note, I re-added a ref, can't hurt to have more sources to back the information up, particularly considering the somewhat controversial nature of the information. Kind regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 17:16, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sure, that would make sense, I'm kind of finding it hard to find the original source though, maybe it's not online? If not then I suppose an offline ref would be fine. Regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 20:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
