Speedy deletion nomination of W.O. Saunders
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on W.O. Saunders requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that your page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Grammarxxx (What'd I do this time?) 00:00, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
below this notice.
You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer instead to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you prefer to change your username rather than create a new account, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
below this notice. Thank you. SmartSE (talk) 00:23, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Query about username change
editHello, NENCGuy. You were given a username block, but were unblocked on the basis of an unblock request stating that you would request a change of username to jhsnowden3. Instead, you requested a change of username to NENCGuy, saying in the request "Current username appears to be a company/group name". On the face of it, it seems obvious that, if "Nencnews" refers to a company, then "NENCGuy" probably refers to the same company. My instinct was to re-block, but before doing so I thought it best to ask you whether there is some good reason, that I have not realised, why your new username should be accepted. Response to JamesBWatson
editAfter reading through several articles, and conversations regarding change of usernames, I reconsidered my name request on the grounds that the name jhsnowden3 would reveal too much about me personally. I live in Northeastern (NE) North Carolina(NC) and I am male (Guy), I decided to alter the name change to NENCGuy. I have not heard from SmartSE, the administrator who placed the original block on my prior name Nencnews. I'm just trying to update the Wiki sections on our local community, nothing more. If you doubt my sincerity, please read the contributions I have made to date. NENCGuy 09:56, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. That seems fine to me. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:06, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ah maybe I should have explained something else in my email to you - the reason for the orignal block was that someone realised that your username was matched this website: http://www.nencnews.com/ It was therefore assumed that you were representing them, although it appears that you are not. Sorry again for any inconvenience. SmartSE (talk) 11:25, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
For the sake of transparency, I am the owner of the website http://www.nencnews.com/ and the print publication The (Currituck) Independent which accompanies itI am the publisher/editor/sole-proprietor of the newspaper serving our community - essentially, I am the newspaper and the newspaper is me. The newspaper is considered a primary source of news and information in our community; and also a Primary source with regards to research interests. So with that being said, I would respectfully ask both of you, how should I proceed with a username? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nencnews (talk • contribs) 12:57, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, that means that your usernames do relate to a business or organisation, in which case both of them are against Wikipedia policy, and theoretically you should request another username change. However, my own opinion is that this part of Wikipedia's username policy is stupid. It seems to me much better for your connection with that website to be transparent and visible, and my own opinion is that, since you are completely open about your position, it is better for you to keep a username which makes that clear, rather than one which hides it. I therefore have no intention of taking any action concerning this. However, there is nothing to stop Smartse or anyone else objecting to your current username, and if they do so you will have to change it.JamesBWatson (talk) 13:07, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting us know. Regarding adding content, please take a look at WP:SELFCITE and WP:SELFPUB - I would advise that you don't reference articles on your website to avoid any potential conflict of interest problems. I think NENCGuy is fine. WP:ORGNAME states that usernames that are unambigously corporation names are forbidden, but those "that contain such names are sometimes permissible". We often recommend that users change from User:Company name to User:John at company name etc. I'm a bit confused why you are still editing as Nencnews though even though that account was renamed. Can you log out of that and only edit as NENCGuy from now on? Thanks SmartSE (talk) 13:46, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I was wrong about the policy, having forgotten the proviso "usernames that contain such names are sometimes permissible". JamesBWatson (talk) 13:58, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

The edit from Nencnews was a mistake - my work computer had cached that login. As soon as I realized that, I logged out, cleared cache, and logged in as NENCGuy.
With regards to referencing articles on my website, would it be appropriate to reference articles in the print publication only? The same as I would in any of the other print publications in our area (e.g. The Daily Advance [in print and web], The Virginian-Pilot [in print and web], The Coastland Times [print only], Outer Banks Sentinel [in print and web], The Outer Banks Voice [web only] etc).
A specific example would be in the article on Currituck County, North Carolina - there is a reference under the Law and government section, which states The county is run by elected county commissioners.
To elaborate, the county is currently run by a board of seven elected commissioners. Prior to the 2008 election, the county was run by a board of five elected commissioners. The change occurred due to successfull passage of a referendum during the 2006 election, which is detailed in an article which appeared in our print edition and the following article on our newspaper web site: Currituck Board Expands to Seven members.
I am working on additional information to clarify that particular passage - researching other print articles (which may or may not exist), and articles on the county-run website which may exist, so that I may include a comprehensive list of references to that particular change.
