In this connection the Secretary advised your Committee that, based upon information recently supplied by the ICC Bureau of Transport Economics and Statistics, the following changes should be made in the Class I listings:

Add: Atlantic & Danville Ry.

Gulf Coast Lines and subsidiaries (Note: The BSL&W, NOT&M, SLB&M and SAU&G are listed individually)
Texas & Northern Ry.
Lakefront Dock and RR Terminal

Delete: Burlington-Rock Island RR

Missouri & Arkansas Ry.
Wheeling & Lake Erie Ry.

These appear to have been in 1948, 1949, and 1950.

"This handbook deals only with the Class I line-haul carriers. The precise number of such roads is confused by the grouping into systems of one or more of them. The Missouri Pacific, for example, controls the so-called Gulf Coast Lines, which are, in fact, four separate Class I railroads. The Soo Line operates, as agent for the trustee, the Wisconsin Central. The New York Connecting Railway, which owns no equipment, is owned jointly by the Pennsylvania and the New Haven, and operated by the latter. But counting all the Class I roads that report separately to the ICC, the total included here comes to 127."

1976 list

edit

http://books.google.com/books?id=EFY7AAAAMAAJ&pgis=1

I believe this to be identical to a 1975 list except that 75 and 76 are new and the notes (1) (2) are not there in 1975.

GEOGRAPHICAL GROUPINGS

The districts to which the railroads have been assigned for statistical purposes are shown on the accompanying map (P II). In some cases, especially where the operated mileage of a road does not lie wholly in a single district, arbitrary assignment of the carrier is made on the basis of location of the major portion of operation.
