Thank you. Editing is easy enough but understanding all the site rules will take a bit of time. You have done some good work on the Yorkshire article, especially the Lord Hawke era. --Mykleavens (talk) 15:41, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

YCCC

edit

No problem at all! The article doesn't belong to anyone in particular. I was planning to work at the history section on the main article and then split it later, but go for it. I would suggest leaving a skeleton history on the main page though, which covers the main points. Any questions, just get in touch. Oh, and as you seem a cricket fan, have you thought about joining WP:CRIC? --Sarastro1 (talk) 20:19, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I will do as you suggest and open some supplementary history articles but, as you say, I will summarise the main points of each period as best I can in the main article. I have joined the Yorkshire project and it would make sense to join the cricket one too as it has always been my favourite sport. --Mykleavens (talk) 18:31, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it looks to me that you're going about this slightly the wrong way around: I'd suggest writing the history for the main YCCC page, and then as and when more detailed articles are needed, they can be created. After all, the boundaries which you have chosen at the moment may seem fine when applied as logical boundaries, but once the information is added, they may end up breaking the history in very unnatural places. Overall, really good work though so far! Harrias talk 21:15, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for writing to me, Harrias. You are quite right, of course, that boundaries are apt to change once a full draft is written. I'll take note and concentrate on accumulating the information first. The delimiters I chose are from the club's origin to the advent of Lord Hawke and then to the First World War. Between the wars is a fairly obvious one and then I went to the sacking of Brian Close in 1970 which marked the beginning of the lean years. After that, I'm not sure about delimiters but I went for 2000 because we won the title in 2001 and there was a significant development then with the young ethnic minority players coming in. I'll see how it goes. The main thing I need is more sources so I think I might look at eBay for some good books! --Mykleavens (talk) 21:40, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Added the other presidents and secretaries using the latest yearbook. I've added the year they finished as well as some of them didn't match. And I'm not sure the ref makes sense where it is. But it's OK for now. I might suggest these two lists would be better as a table (see Manchester United F.C. for ideas), but I'm rubbish at them. However, Harrias is a bit of a genius at them, so it may be worth asking him. --Sarastro1 (talk) 20:58, 8 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

History of Yorks

edit

It looks very good at a quick glance. I've stuck on the wikiproject templates; the easiest way is to copy them from another article. Re categories, these look fine, but why not add the ones on the main YCCC article? It may be worth sticking it up an GAN eventually, although the citation needed templates need to be sorted first. Good work! Do you plan to tackle the others too? Let me know when you get to the 1920s and 1930s as I have loads of stuff for that period that would help. And thanks for the comments on Verity, although it's taken much longer than intended. --Sarastro1 (talk) 19:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Any recent copy of Wisden has all the counties' championship placings going back to 1890. Hodgson has Yorkshire's if you have a copy of it. --Sarastro1 (talk) 20:36, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

His Lordship...

edit

I think Blackjack, who doesn't really come on here anymore, did a lot of work on it some time ago. It's looking good now. I don't know if you have ever seen the photograph of Hawke with Wilfred Rhodes; it is the only known photo of Rhodes smiling! I have a very poor copy of it, but it is absolutely a dead cert PD-US as it was demonstrably published in 1908. If you could get hold of a good copy of it and include it, we can use my version for the publication info to prove it is public domain. If not, I could always upload my version. What do you think? --Sarastro1 (talk) 12:35, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your prompt and comprehensive review and encouraging remarks. I am afraid it was a fraction underdone on nomination but it is certainly looking good now. Barney

edit

Thanks for the review and pass of Crawford. It was nice to have a really thorough cricket review! On the subject of Barney, do you have any biographies of him? I have a vague idea that there was one a long time ago, but not sure of much else. I think it is about time someone did him as he was probably the best bowler of all time. Cardus' obituary of Rhodes says "I asked him [Rhodes] his opinion of Sidney Barnes as a bowler. "The best of 'em today is half as good as Barnie." He intended this as a compliment to the champions of today." All I've got on him is what is in a recent book on the 1912 triangular tournament, but there is some useful stuff there. As an aside, as images are such a problem here, I've got Beldham's photography books from 1906, all the images from which can legally be put of WP. There are some of Barnes, albeit from before his "golden years". I'm hoping to upload a few of them at some point soon. Hopefully. --Sarastro1 (talk) 11:45, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good work on improving the article on Barnes. The article says that he was often referred to as "Barney". Can you provide a citation for that? It may well have been his nickname amongst the players, but I dob't recall ever having seen it mentioned in anything that I've read about him. One other minor point. The first reference to "league cricket" is wikilinked to ECB Premier Leagues. Since the ECB Premier Leagues concept only came into being in 1997, as that article makes clear, I think that the link is more likely to confuse than to help. It might be better to specify, and where possible link to, the main leagues in which he played. JH (talk page) 19:24, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi

Can you please visit the talk page and reply to the questions.

I am mainly concerned that you have not left anything which would help anyone to improve the article. Normally a reviewing editor gives specific points, or examples, to show where the improvements are to be made.

Also you state that the article is "not stable" - that is clearly not true as there is no content dispute or edit war:

  • "Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute."

Lord Hawke

edit

I had a look at the article and reviewed it, but I'm afraid I cannot justify keeping it open and I've failed it. There is quite a lot to do and I've left a slightly-ridiculously long list on the review page. There is a lot of good stuff in the article, but too much needs doing to place it on hold. Let me know when you've had a chance to do any fixes (I realise a lot of the article was there before you began work on it, and I'd imagine these are the parts that need working on most) and I'll have another look. Once the changes are made, this could well be a future potential FA as he is an important figure. --Sarastro1 (talk) 21:43, 21 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Images are a nightmare I'm afraid! It is probably public domain in the UK, but that is not enough. As WP is hosted in the US, it is their copyright laws which apply. The main one is that photos must be PD-US which usually (but not always) means it was PUBLISHED before 1923. This takes precedence and the problem is proving that the picture was published before that date. This is a lot harder than you would think as in effect you must find a published source from pre-1923. Even the UK law is tricky, as if the picture is "anonymous" you must have made some efforts to find the creator and be able to justify that. As the Hawke image is of unknown origin, there is no way of knowing who took the photo, but when it was published there may have been an author. If the photo was taken in, say, 1900, it is possible the photographer may have been (e.g.) 20. If they lived until they were 80 (which is possible) they died in 1960, and so the photo would be under UK copyright until 2030. As I say it's a minefield and I would suggest, if you ever wanted to try for a FA, getting to grips with the whole copyright thing. There are a few experts (of which I am certainly NOT one!) who may be worth getting in touch with nearer the time. The best solution is to find a book with goods photographs that has a publishing date of before 1923. At the moment, I have a copy of Beldham's batsmen and bowlers book and I am making the most of it. I'll have a look for his lordship and I know Barnes is certainly there. --Sarastro1 (talk) 21:52, 24 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
