Florence "Florrie" Dugger merge

The admin objection to the merge isn't a strong one, nor is it based on any policy, MoS, etc. It could withstand a BOLD merger I think. Very little of the non-notable personal info needs to transfer over also. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 11:19, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

@GenQuest: Thanks for the response. Is there some subtle distinction between "merging" and "redirecting" that I should know about? --Muzilon (talk) 21:56, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
The merge should result in a redirect when you are finished. Merging of content should be confined to what is notable and actually referenced. A one-flash wonder may deserve a line or two regarding her (due to Weight) in an over-arching article such as would be the case here. The alternative is to simply bring her article to AfD for a deletion discussion (half of which will result in a decision to merge into the main article anyway). You can see the detailed directions of the merging process at the top of the proposed mergers page, or I can help. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 23:34, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

Help me!

Hopefully a minor formatting query. I am improving the article on Annette Carell. I have split her filmography into two tables: film and TV appearances. The formatting of the second table (TV roles) has turned out rather tricky. It looks like "cellpadding" or double line spacing has somehow been applied, and I can't figure out how to make it single spacing like the first table.--Muzilon (talk) 12:16, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

There seems to have been some unnecessary spacing, which I've now removed.[1] Is that what you were looking for? The two tables look pretty much the same now. 78.28.45.127 (talk) 12:55, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks!--Muzilon (talk) 12:58, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
@Muzilon: Hullo, Muzilon! Part of the problem was your style="background:#ccc; text-align:center;" business. Based on where you placed it, the table was not actually affected by the style change. For the record, I think that aligning the text to center wouldn't actually help you in this case, but if you want to change the table style, here's how to do it:
{| class="wikitable" style="text-align:center;" |- !Year ! Production ! Role ! Notes |-
Obviously, that example is condensed (I couldn't get the nice spacing to show up, but it does in the source to this talk page). If you want to copy my example while you are editing the source to this page, just don't use the <nowiki> or the <code> bits... The background:#ccc business doesn't actually do anything in your current setup because the style tag represents CSS and CSS only supports a background-color property. Adding the nonexistent background tag is what prevented you from seeing the results of the text:align tag. I would just delete the background color thing anyway since the default table color looks just fine. I went ahead and made the necessary changes to the table in your article, just to make it a bit easier for you to see what I meant. I would recommend setting some default spacing definitions for your table rows (in px) just so that your tables are easier to read. For more information on tables, see this help article and for stylistic considerations, see this manual of style (MOS) article. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! - zfJames Please ping me in your reply on this page (chat page , contribs) 13:04, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
@ZfJames: Thanks! I didn't actually create the markup, I just attempted to split the existing table into two separate tables because the film and TV appearances were jumbled together. One thing I do notice is that the 1961 short film "Wings of Death" in the first table still has the "padding" - how do we remove it?--Muzilon (talk) 13:16, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
@Muzilon: There was a line break after the | in the 'short film' notes section, which I removed. That should fix it.  :) - zfJames Please ping me in your reply on this page (chat page , contribs) 13:24, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
You didn't remove it. You might've tried but I was there first and so the credit in the article's history is mine.[2] Not that it matters but believe me when I tell you that you wouldn't want anyone to think this IP is you. 78.28.45.127 (talk) 13:35, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

You don't need to use AfC

Hi, the sea of green above shows you're a very competent editor, you don't need to submit new articles to AfC you can just create such article directly in main-space yourself. You obviously understand the notability and referencing guidelines etc. In fact it would look like you were more the calibre of editor we could do with helping out review the AfC backlog (See Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants if interested). Keep up the good work. All the best, KylieTastic (talk) 15:32, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

@KylieTastic: Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I like to have my submissions reviewed by another set of eyes before unleashing them upon Wikipedia. :) I am also not very familiar with "advanced" WP features like adding Authority Control boxes, so I appreciate that the AfC team usually does things like that.--Muzilon (talk) 15:49, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Help me! (Columns)

Is the {{Div col}} markup no longer supported? It isn't working properly on the bibliographies for Thomas P. Lowry and Paul Goble, for instance - the lists of their books are displaying as a single column, not two columns. --Muzilon (talk) 23:48, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Both appear as normal (i.e. two columns) to me. Feel free to re-open the helpme if necessary, but I think it might be a display issue on your end (try a cache purge?) Primefac (talk) 00:03, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: Hmmm, after some experimentation with different web browsers, I have found that the two columns magically turn into a single column if you increase the font size on your web browser. (I normally have my browser "zoomed" to about 120% because of my middle-aged eyesight!) --Muzilon (talk) 02:15, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, I suppose that's the upside (and downside) of based-on-your-browser column configuration - if the page isn't wide enough you don't actually get columns! Primefac (talk) 19:57, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Help me! (Tables)

Is there any simple way of centering all the tick boxes in the Filmography table of my draft article on Simon Nuchtern using visual editing? I can't see any option to do this with visual editing, and I'd rather not have to code each "tick" manually.--Muzilon (talk) 17:13, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

I think (in wikitext) you need to add style="text-align:center;"| before each {{aye}}. You could copy the wikitext table into something like notepad / wordpad / winword and then do a search and replace (ctrl-h) for {{aye}} to style="text-align:center;"|{{aye}}. I'll leave up the help in case there is another way. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:47, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
The short answer to your question is "no". In order to centre every column, you will have to follow the instructions (using source code) as described above. If you want more help, change the {{help me-helped}} back into a {{help me}}, stop by the Teahouse, Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Primefac (talk) 20:22, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

Newspapers.com

Thanks for posting the question about Newspapers.com citations in the Teahouse. I use Newspapers.com almost daily in working on Wikipedia articles, and I did not realize that wording for citations had been changed from "open access" to "free access".

I don't know why an editor removed the "open access" template (rather than change it to "free access") or why the editor who responded to your Teahouse post considers "free access" to be inappropriate. I think it is good to let a reader know that he or she can see the original article without having to be a subscriber to Newspapers.com. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:38, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

@Teblick: Thanks for your feedback. I found the Helpdesk response rather confusing too. I've now raised this matter at Wikipedia talk:Newspapers.com. --Muzilon (talk) 01:57, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the alert about the discussion at Newspapers.com. I have modified my Newspapers.com macro to eliminate any reference to access. I appreciate your help. Eddie Blick (talk) 15:07, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
You're welcome. People who grumble "You shouldn't ask the same question on 2 or 3 different messageboards" don't seem to realise that sometimes that's the only way to get a straight answer on WP! Muzilon (talk) 23:12, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

I just uploaded a company logo[3] using the upload wizard ("Fair Use"). Am I now supposed to fill in the WP:NFCC#1 and WP:NFCC#2 fields on the image's information page? Or is this not necessary for logos? Muzilon (talk) 08:15, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

It's necessary for all non-free files. Better yet, use {{Non-free use rationale logo}} instead of the generic template. 78.28.54.83 (talk) 08:36, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
