Hi Mulder,

I notice you put [c, ɟ] as alt pronunciations of the postalveolars. Would you mind quoting the reference where you got this info? The reason I ask is that the symbols <c, ɟ> are frequently used for postalveolar affricates, and even placed in the palatal plosive cell of the IPA chart when they have that value, so unfortunately the symbols are meaningless unless they're specifically described as stops.

Just so you know, "Romance" is a noun, and "Romantic" is an adjective. In some of the replacements you made in Interlingua, changing the adjective to the noun could work (as the result was a noun phrase), but in others, it was just nonsense. Almafeta 08:37, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

Faroese unpredictable rules

Hi Mulder, I wonder if there are any pronunciation rules that are unpredictable just by looking at the spelling of the word? Are there Faroese words that are spelt the same but have more than one pronunciation? Thought I had replied to this already. Sorry about that. :$ Well, for instance, we have about 7-8 words which do not follow the "vowel + single consonant = long vowel" rule. But this is due to the etymological spelling. I'll give you a more detailed answer in a few days when I have better time, if that's OK. Mulder1982 (talk) 12:13, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

OK, this turned out to be a much harder question to answer since the rules are very "Faroe-ingrained" if that's even a word but I'll try my best. One of the most basic rules in Faroese is that if more than one consonant follows a stressed vowel, then that vowel is short. Now, most understand "consonant" to here mean a letter of the alphabet and not phoneme which is what the rule refers to, so that's why the word vitja has a long vowel, because the -tj- is one phoneme, although it's two letters. There are a few exceptions to this rule, and they are generally set up as stop + liquid, so p t k + l r. If a vowel is after a combination of these consonants, then that vowel will be long, so that's why epli has a long <e>. This rule, however, does not apply to the dialects of Suðuroy, where this vowel will be short, so the cognate to epli, epl, has a short vowel. Also, this rule has its own except: -tl- will always yield a short vowel, so ætla (cognate in English: ettle) and all its non-lemma forms all have a short vowel.

I also mentioned, that there are word which do not follow the vowel + two consonant = short vowel rule. These word have only consonant but the vowel is short. These are however very few and quite common. The ones I can list of the top of my head are: men, man, skula, skulu, um. (and there's a few more). Note, that of these five, there's already a thing to look after. The word: man. It can have three meanings, we'll look at the standard ones first: it can be the present tense of the verb mega which means may or might. Here, the vowel is short. Second, it can be the singular imperative of the verb at mana, which is what you'd do to a devil you're trying to vanquish, you'd "mana" it into the ground. Third, it can be the borrowed neutral pronoun (the man from Danish and German), in this case the vowel is short and usually, even though the word is not considered standard, it's suggested that you write it with two n's: mann.

Another group of words would be totally unpredictable heteronyms. One example is the word "røða". As you know, <ð> carries no phoneme in Faroese anymore, so between two vowels you most commonly need to insert a glide between them. Now, if røða is a noun, it means a "speech" and uses the [w] (or [v]). However, if it's a verb, then it means to give a speech or to talk about something and there's no glide there. - I think this word might be an extreme case, as I can't think of any others like it.
