editMorning Mike, small world (Im also an Aucklander - Takapuna to be precise :) ) You are dead right, notability is entirely subjective; however we do have some guidelines (have a read of the policy at WP:N)
I took a look at the website yesterday as it happens, and my first impressions were that she is on the fringe. When articles are written that are clearly not notable (and we get hundreds per day) they are deleted almost immediately via our Speedy deletion criteria - now in my opinion she is not speediable - which means that when you submit the article, if some editors feel it is not notable enough then it will most likely be nominated for deletion. Now this is a 5 day process where users express there opinions and then deletion (or not) is decided upon based on consensus.
So, what I suggest you do is rewrite the article at Orriel Smith, and do your best to ensure it fits our neutral point of view and copyright policies (don't copy it from her website for example). This will give the best chances of retaining the article.
I know it sounds complicated (and writing your first article is a challenge - most Wikipedians find their first attempts deleted) but its not that difficult trust me (Ive clocked up 10,000 edits here!) The only other tip I have is take a look at the formatting or similar articles, especially things like Wikilinks, and things like the External links sections (you'll find all of this info at WP:MOS).

editI got your message but I can't find the article you speak of. It is not at Orriel Smith Operatic Parodist nor Orriel Smith (and it hasn't been deleted from those locations). Any ideas? Glen 01:37, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmm... okay. The draft you've given me really needs some work. First of all, what really strikes me is a lot of it breaches our neutral point of view policy. Example - look for the parts in italics:
- The difference between "naive" parodists like Florence Foster Jenkins (who for all her seeming naivety well knew what she was on about) is that Orriel Smith can not only sing but can hit high E's and F's which have reviewers drooling
- In fact, even talking about the difference between her and others is showing a point of view (who says they're different - they may sound the same to me) - see what I mean? If you have an opinion like that in there, it should be the opinion of a reviewer (and the review should be linked to).
- Also, Im not really sure that her notability is shown. Perhaps if you could link to these reviews it would help. Hope this helps you for now Glen 20:19, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
