Thanks for catching that one. I only read a bit of it to figure that deletion as spam was called for, but definitely a copyvio as well. Seraphimblade 12:44, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Helpme edit

I was looking at recent changes, when I came across an oddly formatted AfD notice on Poomulli; it pointed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/non-notable instead of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Poomulli and there was a small bit of junk at the front. So I made this edit, and told the AfD nominator here. Can someone take a look and make sure everything's pointing to the right places? Thanks. Mr Stephen 19:48, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looks good to me. Nice catch! It usually takes days to find improperly formed AfDs. The user who commented on the incorrect page blanked his entry, so I'll tag the page for deletion. -- Merope Talk 20:09, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mr.Stephen, I understand that I did something terrible and you fixed that. It was my attempt to place an argument |argument in the box that went wrong. Thank you for fixing it. I will ask the user to post the comment at the proper page. Thanks. Kuntan 23:13, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

All I did to the Medley Hall page was correct grammatical errors - hardly a sin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.250.6.247 (talkcontribs) .

Please sign your messages with four tildes, ie ~~~~. We may be at cross-purposes here. These edits to Medley Hall (University of Melbourne) are the ones I reverted and warned you for. Adding "sux" doesn't look like corrections of grammatical errors to me. Mr Stephen 13:30, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, Communist edit

Disagree do we, Mr Stephen? Wikipedians who wish to improve grammar on Wikipedia's pages are now labelled as vandals? And then any commentary is removed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by VikingLAB79 (talkcontribs) .

Nico Ditch edit

Hi Mr Stephen :-) Just finished writing a short entry about Nick'r ditch. Can't find stuff that seems to prove Reddish and Gorton got there names through it. I spent 4 hours in Manchester Central library this afternoon, and they seem to all huff and puff that Reddish is named after a reedy ditch (you try walking over the vale after a few pints in the houldsworth!!!!)

Winning Hill (Now Ryder Brow) seems to be something to do with a battle before Nico ditch was built, but even that is doubtful. If you find any sources please contribute. Mike33 17:45, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nickar/Nicar

Looking today at some of the alternative names for Nico Ditch, Danish folklore has an evil spirit called Hnickar, but that name apparently could only have ever been applied to it by the danish (or decsendent) inhabitants who could only envy what was going on behind it.

The other version is that is comes from the Anglo Saxon "To Kill" - Noecan which we still use in such lovely words as Knack and Knacker. Which reminds me of the Nursery Rhyme -

Knick, Knack, Paddy Whack!

I wonder if they are related? Mike33 19:50, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nico Ditch as a boundary marker

Thanks for your message

Nico Ditch certainly follows boundry markers since manorial times. By the time the Normans taxed the area it would have been a great obstacle. Anglo-Saxons didnt tithe, and the Danes were more concerned with taking over land.

The whole of the ditch was built over wetland, which would have filled within days or weeks, (was no proper understanding of reclaiming wetland till the victorian era) and the survival of linguistic dialect south of the ditch means that until 823AD when the Danegeld truce happened, no further incursion happened byond that district.

Would be great if the Lancashire & Cheshire Antiquarian Society Transactions were online, but only have access to them at Manchester Central library.

OT - I want to write a large article about Non-conformity in Manchester 1560 - 1690. Can you help me with any off hand sources? Your friend Mike33 16:12, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cross Street Chapel edit

Yeah, think it was built in Queen Annes time 1695+ there wasn't any restrictions then on religious belief apart from catholics and jews. Cross street chapel was used by low church people, but don't know the exact time they declared themselves as a congregation as UNITARIAN.

Would love to help you with your project. its a chapel and a multi-million pound building ;-) your friend, Mike33 17:21, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is there something documented about .<ref /> or <ref />.? <ref />. actually makes more sense for me, and I have been ‘fixing’ it when I see articles mixing both usages.

Sense, I daresay edit

The contrast with the usual, ah, Molesworthian orthography suggests independent authorship, but I believe it's out of copyright (I remember him mentioning some book orig. published 1890), and it looks to be sound. The essential problem here is that during the late 19th century, various books were published on the history of the de Burgh/de Burgo/Burke family. There's no particular reason to believe them inaccurate when they discuss William de Burgh and his descendants, but they also attempt to trace William's ancestry. The modern consensus seems to be that he was a brother of Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent and was of some minor gentry stock in, I believe, Norfolk; unfortunately, the 19th-century writers were determined to give the Burkes a more distinguished pedigree, and so they linked them to the Counts of Mortain (descendants of the Dukes of Normandy) and from there through some ludicrous relationships to Charlemagne. (See the top of User talk:Burkem, where I link to a post on soc.genealogy.medieval which explains this quite nicely.) After a titanic struggle and a block, he's been persuaded to abandon the second part of that, although I see he's still (today's edits to William de Burgh) tracing back to the Counts of Mortain, which is also at variance with the modern opinion. He does seem to be editing in good faith, and the quality of his work is improving (making proper succession boxes, for instance); on the other hand, he does tend to blow away properly wikified text, references, and so forth when he edits. I'm really at my wits end as to what to do: some of the information is useful and wasn't here before, e.g., his description of de Burgh's first expedition into Connacht, but he's still generating a tremendous volume of cleanup work, and I feel I've already cast myself far enough in the role of "guy who nags and threatens on his talk page". Really, what he needs is some sort of mentorship, ideally by a previous uninvolved third party, but I'm not sure if there's any active project/committee in Wikipedia filling that role. Choess 23:52, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think this will have to be tackled in two phases. The problem with setting straight the genealogy is I don't have immediate access to good hardcopy sources on Burke genealogy like The Complete Peerage and so forth. They're quoted in various places on the Internet, to some degree, and discussion in soc.genealogy.medieval is very scholarly, notwithstanding the fact that it's Usenet, but at some point I will have to troop down to the reference library and assemble a definitive, amply-cited genealogy of William de Burgh and the first several generations of his descendants. When that gets done, there will at least be a solid, referenced basis to point to or revert to until he's convinced that yes, the Counts of Mortain are out of bounds. That will take care of the outright false information. The second phase, which is where mentorship would really come in, is convincing him to raise the quality of his edits — don't unnecessarily zap existing content, wikify, cite sources, and so forth and so on. I think he has been acting in good faith all along, which is what makes the situation so frustrating. If I thought he were vandalizing, I'd have long since asked for an indef block. But I think he just hasn't understood why people are contradicting him (after all, his information came from a book!) or how Wikipedia works, culturally, in general. Unfortunately, trying to get through to him is tremendously enervating for the editors involved. Choess 00:23, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism edit

HI there,

I recently got a Vandalism warning from you - I'm not quite sure how that's possible? I don'y recall editing any pages...

Furthermore, I never visited the "Fromage" page.

Regards,

Jethro —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.2.57.110 (talkcontribs) .

If you are not using a shared computer, then it looks like you have a dynamic IP address. Someone using the same IP address that you just posted from (202.2.57.110) erased warnings sent to User talk:202.2.57.126, partly regarding vandalism of Fromage. If the messages don't apply to you then ignore them, but be aware that vanadalism is coming from computers that share your address. Mr Stephen 08:19, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Copying one's own text from other Web sites edit

Hi Mr Stephen, Yes I did copy the text for Lahannya and Chris Norman from their Web sites, but that is because I wrote this text myself as I run all Web sites for Lahannya and the myspace page and English translations for Chris Norman. Do I really have to write a new version of something I wrote myself already? I also hold the copyright of the image I uploaded and that was deleted. I would very much like to use it but state that people should not use it outside of Wikipedia. I understand that they may well do that, but since photos are already available on myspace and the Lahannya site already, I don't have a problem with that. I don't want to sanction for people to use it in any context. Is there no way I can mark its copyright in such a way that you are satisfied and stop deleting it, yet I have a way of saying this photo is part of the press pack and can be used on Wikipedia, but please don't use it outside of Wikipedia? Thanks, Bluenarcotic

Images edit

Actually, it appears the image message I found was regarding an older image. I believe the second one I uploaded works. So it's just my question about copying one's own text.

Hello -

Was just wondering if you could give me some examples of how my edited TuneTribe article (yesterday) was advertising... I've a feeling you mean links to the different sections of the site - is this the case?

I tried to keep it as neutral as possible so am surprised to see it taken down. If you could offer me guidance on where I'm going wrong that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Dan

I tried to keep it as neutral as possible so am surprised to see it taken down. If you could offer me guidance on where I'm going wrong that would be much appreciated.

Also wanted to direct you to the Emusic entry, which also lists the prices of the services it offers, and gives examples of record labels sold.

I'm pretty confused now - willl wait your direction before trying to upload again. Aside from prices and examples of catalogue I feel I have kept the article neutral, free of value judgements and statements which are not based on fact.

Thanks

Hi -

Have posted a new TuneTribe article - have removed all the external links and added an info box. Have removed all advert-like statements, or so I hope anyway!!

External, verifiable references have proved difficult to find as there aren't really any - hope this isn't a problem.

If there's still a problem, it'd be great if you could give me feedback and request changes before you go ahead and delete. I'm at my computer constantly and will pick your message up within minutes.
