Speedy deletion nomination of User:Mpmagliano/sandbox/Rock Nacional (Oakland-based Band) edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Mpmagliano/sandbox/Rock Nacional (Oakland-based Band), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Blocked edit

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for advertising or promotion. From your contributions, this seems to be your only purpose.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Request reason:

my objective is not and was never to do advertising. As I noted before, I wanted to provide a factual description of my band and album, but understand I'm not popular enough to merit a standalone page. Being blocked indefinitely, however, seems a bit punitive and not merited given my intent. I am also a writer and an attorney and may have contributions to make on other parts of Wikipedia that I would not want to be prevented from offering up to the community. Ultimately, if future submissions aren't up to par, I know the review process will catch that and let me know. Thanks so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpmagliano (talkcontribs) 18:15, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

This was headed in the right direction and I was close to unblocking your account until I read your comment below, which basically parses as "I won't write about my band into Wikipedia, but can I write about my band into Wikipedia?" That convinces me that, despite your claim that you "may have contributions to make on other parts of Wikipedia", your real purpose here is still to try and get publicity for your band. If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Would you agree to not edit about your band to be unblocked? Athaenara do you have any additional concerns? 331dot (talk) 20:15, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@331dot: This user is the typical COI SPA: a single purpose account with a conflict of interest. The claim that "my objective is not and was never to do advertising" is contradicted by the actual editing: all the edits were designed to use Wikipedia to raise the public profile of a little-known band. Blocks like these are not "punitive" but as a practical matter simply prevent further promotion. That being said, and within the conceptual model of punishment suggested by this user as opposed to our volunteer efforts to keep the encyclopedia spam-free, another admin might decide to reduce the block to time served, so to speak, or reduce it to a few days or one week upon the elapse of which this new user's editing privileges would be as before. – Athaenara 22:51, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm happy to agree not to create a page about my band. I still think there is a big difference between raising factual awareness of something, as opposed to marketing it. That said, I understand why my proposed page isn't acceptable at this time, and need not address that further. I do have a question, though. On Wikipedia's page describing the Appalachian song "In The Pines", there is a long, long list that identifies artists who've recorded versions of that standard, a lot of whom are not known bands (a lot are, I realize that). Since I too have recorded a version of that song, can that be noted there or is there a notoriety requirement for that type of list? I understand there wouldn't be a link to the site where the song can be heard or purchased, but is it possible to state the fact my band's version is part of that artistic tradition? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpmagliano (talkcontribs) 23:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I see the misunderstanding. I wasn't suggesting that I come up with the content -- I was asking whether the content could be proposed and put up per Wikipedia's standards. It was only a question that I was leaving to your guidance and discretion. Again, even in a worse case scenario, I assume that the review standards will catch and reject content that's not per Wikipedia's standards, but to go the extra length to shut down a voice altogether seems like hitting an ant with a hammer. I know it's totally up to you to do what you want here, and certainly appreciate your taking the time to discuss this with me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpmagliano (talkcontribs) 18:48, 16 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Notability and conflict of interest edit

Wikipedia only accepts articles about notable subjects - those that have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time, and are not outside the scope of Wikipedia. We consider evidence from reliable and independent sources to gauge this attention. Specific notability criteria for musicians and ensembles are described at WP:BAND.

Writing about yourself or your work is an inherent conflict of interest. You cannot be an objective judge of your own notability. It is next to impossible to write about yourself from the required neutral point of view, without hint of bias or self-serving intent; and to rely on information taken only from reliable, independent sources and not your own unpublished personal knowledge.

If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be written about according to our policies of notability, verifiablity and neutrality, someone else not connected to you will probably have enough interest to write an article. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 04:31, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
