Māori names of organisms edit

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia! Just a quick heads up to stop you spending time on edits that might be reverted: Non-English language names of organisms should not be added to articles. Please have a look at the Manual of style section for organisms to learn more about this. EditorInTheRye (talk) 21:34, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Interesting, thank you for the heads up. It's not something we considered as the use to Te reo Maori is part of the NZ cultural landscape and built into the sciences here as well. I will pass this feedback on. Mordreth007 (talk) 02:37, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Mordreth007, please note that when you add any content, it’s not a minor edit. Please read Help:Minor edit to find out what they are and until you’ve had a chance to read that, simply don’t check that box.
EditorInTheRye, please note that the relevant guideline states: It is not necessary to include non-English common names, unless they are also commonly used in English, e.g. regionally. As Māori is an official language in New Zealand, it is most certainly appropriate to list the te reo name of New Zealand organisms. It’s less clear what to do if those organisms aren’t endemic but indigenous. Schwede66 06:25, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I read that as "it's ok to add the Maori name, assuming it's what's also used in English" - which seems like a possibility given most of these don't have an English name listed (and hey, it happened with the Wētā). I'm not sure Maori being an official language of a country that also speaks English has any bearing here, though (if so, would we add local Welsh names to animals found in Wales?)
Anyway, that was why I was only reverting the edit to Forficula auricularia‎, letting Mordreth007 exercise their own judgement on the rest. EditorInTheRye (talk) 07:16, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure Maori being an official language of a country that also speaks English has any bearing here. It sure does. You'd have to live in New Zealand to know, though. If you want to get an insight on what's going on with te reo in New Zealand, I can recommend you read this RfC, EditorInTheRye. Schwede66 09:38, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Let me clarify: Maori being an official language of New Zealand should in itself not be a deciding factor here. As Mordreth007 clarified, "Te reo Maori is part of the NZ cultural landscape and built into the sciences here as well" is what makes adding the names ok to me, now that it's been explained.
