Potential improper propagation of et al.

I didn't look through the code for Task 7: CS1 et al. repair, but I did not see this addressed in the description, so I just want to be safe and (temporarily) stop Monkbot (if this isn't the case). Citations that contain et al. in an author/editor n parameter are not meant to have et al. at the end of the author/editor list if an author/editor n+1 parameter exists. For example, |author1=Alpha, et al.|author2=Beta|author3=Gamma should have the et al. removed instead of having |display-authors=etal added. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say I see this in ~10% of the citations I've corrected, which were limited to those somewhere in Category: Astronomy.   ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅contribs ⋅dgaf)  15:35, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

The bot can't know if the et al. in any citation template is appropriate regardless of its position. It can only operate on what information is available. For your example case, when Module:Citation/CS1's function extract_names() finds the et al. text in |author1=, that text is stripped and a flag set so that the Module will add et al. to the end of the author name list and also add the page to Category:CS1 maint: Explicit use of et al.. These actions are taken to preserve the editor's presumed intent and to protect the citation's metadata (et al. is not an author so does not belong in the author metadata).

Task 7 knows only that the page is listed in Category:CS1 maint: Explicit use of et al. and that this particular author parameter has some form of the et al. text. It cannot know whether the et al. text is there for a purpose or if it is there because an editor failed to remove it when other author parameters were added. It cannot know if the additional author parameters name just some or all of the authors. Removing the text from the author parameter and adding |display-authors=etal is the correct thing to do if there are additional authors and does no harm if there aren't additional authors.

It appears that I can. Task 7a does not edit templates that have author/editor parameters the numerically follow the parameter with the et al. text.

Discovery Institute

The content on Wikipedia’s page for The Discovery Institute is full of errors, starting with your use of the word “pseudoscientific.” Cellular & molecular biologists & engineers, PhDs all, currently are doing this research & publishing at large universities both in the US & other countries under Discovery’s auspices. As well, Discovery consistently goes to great pains to NOT refer to “creationism” as any part of their focus. They absolutely are NOT focused on religion, although elitists, many with less science education, who like to sneer at them do accuse them of that. Those folks most likely have never been to one of Discovery’s briefings or book releases. I’ve been to many so I actually know something about what they do. what makes you feel like you are the only one allowed to edit the Skybolt Biplane page. I added a very unique Skybolt registration N9992 which is only one flying of two aluminum wing Skybolts where the builder was the main foreman and an engineer for Schweizer who built it in there own time at the factory, and I painstakingly added it and you removed it. Is this about Steen Skybolt? If so, Monkbot removed |language=English from a CS1 citation as it should do because this is en.wikipedia and because that citation points to an English language source. Neither I, nor Monkbot make any claim to ownership of that article.

Thanks for the quick save. Whatever is/was the problem, I was able to get AWB and task 6n to repeat but regardless of how I changed 6n, the result was always the same – a blank page. On a hunch, I restarted AWB (it had been running for a long, long time without a restart). And now task 6n is working as it should. The thing I noticed is that a page that should not have been touched (Dušan Šakota, which has no icon templates adjacent to cs1|2 templates) was blanked.

I'll run the task for a while in manual mode and see how it goes.

Where on earth is the place to make page suggestions? If a page is locked, like the Black September Organization page. then how can you fix an error? There's no link for page comments, so there's nowhere to go but here. It's a simple error. Black September Organization page, first paragraph, mid paragraph, missing second "as" in "as well as," thus reads "as well a" instead of "as well as a."
