Watching the River Flow

Hi Moisejp, I've added some critical material to WTRF. The article is interesting but I have one query. Why is it described as a blues song? Blues to me usually takes the form of AAB, or 12 bar blues. Significant blues songs recorded by BD include "Meet Me In The Morning" on BOTT, and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" on MT. On BD's first album there are many blues, inc "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" and "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean". WTRF doesn't seem to me to have either the rhyme scheme or feel of a blues. It's hard to put it in a genre, I'd suggest it's got a piano-driven boogie feel. Mick gold (talk) 18:00, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

SELOTL,thanks Moisejp, it would be good if you could add a sound clip. In the FAC of BoB, I think you said clip could be 10% of song length. SELL is 682 seconds, so could clip be 68 secs? My sugestion would be: come in at 50" "with your pockets well protected" and then go out at 01.54 after "Arabian drums". That way we hear enigmatic images and a sizeable part of the sad eyed chorus. Hi Moisejp, welcome back from your wiki break. I'll have another look at WTRF when I get a moment. My vinyl copy of the Hits album is called More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits (1971). It credits Leon Russell as producer of WTRF. No other info, aside from crediting Happy Traum on last 3 tracks: Released, Nowhere & Flood. Hi Moisejp, I would consider boogie an appropriate category. That's what I hear in the music, rather than boogie woogie, but there is inevitably something a tad subjective in these categories. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Personnel:

The Olof Bjorner ref for personnel, in addition to the musicians we list, also gives the following: Claudia Linnear & Kathy McDonald (backup vocals). I can't hear any backup vocals on either "River Flow" or "Masterpiece". Presumably, the personnel listed on his site is for the session as a whole, which doesn't necessarily mean they appeared on every song. The background singers could have appeared on some of the covers or alternate takes of "Masterpiece". But by the same token, how do we know the other musicians necessarily did play on "River Flow"? Or, it seems unlikely but still hard to 100% discount the possibility, maybe the backup vocals are in "River Flow" but way down in the mix, and drowned out by the various instruments. I don't know, I'm just saying if we have to be careful to not fall into OR by making any assumptions. The best solution is if we could find personnel credits for the individual song, but I'm not too hopeful about that. My only other solution, a bit convoluted and unsatisfying, would be to say something like "These are the personnel for the sessions, but it is not clear whether all of these musicians played on 'River Flow'." Even that could be bordering on OR, though. Or possibly leave out the Personnel section, but that's not a very satisfying solution either. Do you have any ideas?

I would leave out out Linnear and McDonald. There are no women's voices on this song. I don't think anyone will criticise you for OR, and if they do, I will support you in any ensuing controversy to the best of my abilities. My hunch is Linnear and McDonald were booked for the session, but a take with their voices wasn't released. I don't have Krogsgaard (1995). Carl Radle was a well know bass player, he was after all with Derek and the Dominos. As for the Netherlands chart, I'm afraid I don't have a strong opinion, and I trust you to do the right thing with the material. I associate boogie woogie with Meade Lux Lewis [3] and Pine Top Perkins. I don’t think WTRF sounds like that. To my ears, Leon Russell’s piano-led rock band makes WTRF comparable with “With A Little Help From My Friends” and “Delta Lady”, both hits for Joe Cocker with Leon Russell producing. What do you call that? WP calls Cocker’s “Help” Blues rock, blues rock can have both guitar and piano extensions. What record does WTRF sound comparable to – for you? The photos look nice and I like the ways you have improved the article. The refs to Gill, Marcus etc via google.ca work fine for me. I don't know where Heylin gets his Russell idea from, it would be good if CH had provided some ref. The only thing I noticed was Gray points out Russell played bass on Dylan's next 1971 single, "George Jackson", so I've added that. Tweak if you see anything wrong with refs. 1. Jesse Ed Davis. I thought it was obvious he was lead guitar on the session. That bluesy lead guitar is what he was famous for. If you look at The Concert For Bangladesh [5], it's Davis who plays all those lead guitar lines. Don Preston is also in The Concert but he's rhythm guitar. There are websites devoted to playing that Jesse Ed Davis style of blues guitar. [6]

2 Funny you mention Rolling Stone report. I had the same thought. The problem is that when I use the advanced search on Rolling Stone DVD ROM, I haven't found the stuff CH mentions. There are no hits on WTRF from 1971; there are 2 from 1972 but they don't report that material. I'll keep looking. I think the prose flows OK. I have been doing many variant searches for (saving your sensibilities) WTRF, Dylan, Russell, Blue Rock. By reading RS page by page I finally found this in Random Notes, but it's not very substantial:

Rolling Stone, April 15, 1971, p. 4, Random Notes:

Rumor of the Week Runner Up: Leon Russell has been recording with Bob Dylan in the latter’s studio in the Village. Sources said Dylan and Russell were doing original stuff, with Leon on piano, Dylan singing, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, Carl Radle on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums. The session, as you might have guessed, was closed.

There are no hits on WTRF from 1971. There are 2 from 1972, neither very interesting. One is a review of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II by Paul Nelson, 6 Jan 72, which merely mentions the song. The second is an article, "N.Y. Recording Scene Seethes" by Chris Hodenfield, 2 Mar 72, which is a report on the NY recording scene, and mentions that Dylan & Russell preferred to record in Blue Rock to recording in a CBS studio. That's all my RS has furnished me with. I'm off for 2 weeks to Crete, without any Dylan books or much internet access, so I won't be able to contribute much. thanks for spending the time to write me in such detail and good temper. i really dont know too much about editing wikipedia, tho i have used it often as a source of info. i plan to drop the whole thing. just as a point of purpose, i started editing the page because people were constantly telling me that they had looked for us and found this other band. it may have been silly of me to ask you to google our band, my only point was that there are hundreds of articles available about our band, and i have not been able to find much of anything about the cover band. i have heard of mathew sweet as we have relationships with many athens bands; it's just been a drag to have to explain to fans that the wikipedia article has nothing to do with us. thanks again for the manner in which your letter was written. -steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevetirozzi (talk • contribs) 19:40, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

re If Not for You

Hi Moisejp. No, you go right ahead and change refs style to match other Dylan articles (it was very considerate of you to ask actually). I like the idea of automatic links from Notes to listing in Refs as well, it's just that the only template I've come across allows for Harvard style only − which I can't stand(!), too many full stops etc. But this is a Bob song, and I'm all for consistency across one artist's work. Would you agree, though, that "I'd Have You Anytime" is more a George song so should retain style I've been imposing across 1970−75 Harrison solo articles? I might add a few more points for the Harrison "If Not for You", from some new books I've got. It's funny that you got in touch, cos when I put "My Sweet Lord" up for GAN recently I noticed "Wigwam" and thought, "Hey, I wonder if Moisejp can work on 'If Not for You' since right now there's more on Olivia Newton-John's version than on Bob's original!" Hi again Moisejp. Yes, I'm sure our paths'll cross, which would be great, cos I can see from above your contributions have won a good few fans. I was thinking, with the Concert for Bangladesh album, would you have a ref or two to add maybe, late in the section "Record company obstruction", to support the point "Dylan and his record company were already benefiting from the exposure provided by the Bangladesh concerts, through the timely release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II ..."? Just seems like an extra source would be welcome, and it's a point I've read about in a few books over the years, but (usual thing) can't find when I need it. (It might've been Shelton's book, which I've now lost.) Would be great if you could add something; no probe if not, of course. Another thing, about GA noms: I've always wondered about mentions of "Reviews" against nominated articles, and I can see you've amassed a few for Wigwam. I'd Have You Anytime

Hi there Moisejp. Thanks for all that info on cover versions for this song. I'm happy to do a bit more investigating and add them to the article (I think the Nillah one, for instance, might be a different song). I know what you mean about criteria for inclusion in these Cover Versions sections − I recently worked on My Sweet Lord and ended up adding each and every cover version I could find, only because the approach previously seemed to be to list pretty much anyone and everyone, regardless of whether they have an article as an artist. Makes for a very long list in some cases, of course(!). Your idea of wiki-artists-only covers sounds like a good one, though, in hindsight. Hey, well done on the Wigwam GA. Thanks again. Mama, You Been on My Mind

Moisejp: Wonderful to hear from you. On the business at hand, there's more that could be added to "Mama..." but not a great deal, because of how little has been written about the song. A couple of things are missing, such as Dylan "gave" the song to Baez, who recorded it first. I have material on that and will probably re-structure the Covers section to start with it. Another possibility is a sentence or two on how Harrison came to record it as a demo. More noticeably missing are specifics on the song's narrative. It really is a great song, but there's not a lot available in terms of analysis. As for GA, I think it would take some of what I've suggested as well as a couple more sources, though I don't know all that much about the criteria or process to say.

Back to where I started, I've been engaged in a bunch of things that have helped me avoid too much heavy editing, though I've dabbled with the Train Songs list and more recently Dylan Covers, basically because that kind of thing is easy to pick up and put aside. However, I would like to pitch in again with the BD project, so if you have something to suggest that you think needs help or attention, let me know. BTW, if I haven't mentioned it before, you can hear me Saturday mornings on wdiyfm.org, 11 am-1 pm EST, where I host a mixed bag program of folk, blues, bluegrass, swing, folk rock and the like. Hi, Moisejp: The more sources the merrier. Some of the material I used under Lyrics would actually fit better under Reception/Appraisal, so feel free to re-locate whatever you want. (If you need the original source material, let me know, and I'll provide a transcript.) Frankly, as I said before, I haven't been able to find much on the song's narrative, so I used the critical descriptions from Heylin, Gill, etc. Anything else you can dig up and add on the lyrics would be appreciated.

I'm about to tackle a re-write of "Pledging My Time", which is just barely a stub. I put together notes using some of the sources from BoB and think there's a half-decent story to tell. I'll let you know when I post the first pass. Oh, and do tune in if you can. One other idea: photos? Now that we have a Live section, just about any Dylan live shot would fit there. Another idea is the pic in the Charlie McCoy article, and the caption could say that it was the first appearance of McCoy on a Dylan album, with several other appearances to follow. Maybe an Al Kooper shot could be a third one to use for balance. But whatever, these are just ideas. Again, if you'd rather not bother with any pics for now, I'll drop the idea. Thanks for FAC. Fingers crossed. Imho the replacement of Tom Wilson by Bob Johnston is a major incident in Dylan's recording career, and has been subject of much debate in the biographies. So it's worth giving some detail on this in H61R. The prominence of Kooper's organ in mix is not a minor thing, it's the key to the whole sound of the record, and this single went on to become arguably the most important song/recording in Dylan's career. There is some detail on the mysterious "Lunatic Princess Revisited" recording in this article, which is not of any consequence. I've had a go at breaking the song sections down into Side One and Side Two. Please tweak if it doesn't look right. We're certainly shaving material. The OK Computer sections on songs is certainly longer than ours. Our H61R article is now less than half the length of OK Computer article. Not sure if this is progress, but it's certainly FAC! After all, it was a "hit" single that kick-started the album. And Dylan's commentary on the Old Testament has been heard as "audacious" by every critic who has commented on this work. "multiple accolades" - I thought this referred to RS poll position for album, for 3 songs from album, & also to critical plaudits from Heylin, Scaduto, Marqusee, Gray, Shelton, Pollizzotti, Gill et al, so I thought it was OK. Dylan's "Pledging My Time"

Hi, Moisejp. I just posted a draft of "Pledging My Time". I'd appreciate if you'd take a look at it and make whatever changes or additions you feel are appropriate. I covered most of the story, though the lede still needs a bit more. I removed the Personnel section, which had covered the full BoB lineup; I still need to pin down exactly who played on the song, as opposed to everyone who's credited for the album.
