Nabeel Rajab Article

Hello, thanks a lot for tidying up the information dump. There was some useful information in it but the way it was added was inappropriate for a Wikipedia article, as well as making it almost impossible to read. Your editing has made a really big difference. Nevertheless there is still work to be done on it before the new information is properly integrated into the article. It still reads as "promotional". In fact the importance of Nabeel Rajab's work is obscured by the over-enthusiastic tone of the language used. There is also a lack of adequate referencing for the information. If we can work on that together I'm sure we can use the information to make a substantial improvement in the article.

(Inserted subsequently) (In fact it was only one section that had an over-enthusiastic tone, which I've moderated. However some of the information is provided at an "organisational" level of detail. Some of that can probably be streamlined in order to focus attention on Rajab and his work)

As far as pictures are concerned, the copyright situation makes it very complicated uploading pictures unless you're willing to spend time sorting out the issues. I'm afraid I don't have the time at the moment to deal with all the faff of copyright and licensing problems. The best way of proceeding is to upload the pictures to Wikimedia Commons with the copyright holder's permission allowing free use - if you go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/COM:OTRS you'll find links that will give you an idea of the issues involved. I hope you won't mind me washing my hands of that issue for the time being but I'm trying to sort out a picture issue for another article at the moment and that's causing me enough aggravation. Hey, it's actually me who should say thanks a lot, not you. Bahrain is my country after all ;)

I've seen your contributions and I understand that you are busy with a lot of things (I actually wasted an hour reading the stuff you were working on). It's just that I have final exams starting in 5 days (will be over on 2 June 2011), so that's when I'll probably come back to work on those stuff. I only have made efforts on this article, because I gave a word to someone that I would. By the way, I didn't use the "information dump", I had the same information already, probably from the same source. In fact I was surprised when I first saw it in the edit (I was like - from where the heck did that come? and how is it hidden?), but then realized it's the same info - this is due to me being very new to Wikipedia, almost just 1-2 day(s) experience. I do have questions, but now is not the appropriate time for me to ask. You will probably find some grammatical mistakes as I'm an Arab. One of the clearest mistakes with I just realized is the use of "Nabeel" instead of "Rajab".

So, thanks very much for your all of your efforts and keep up the good work :)

I actually like your work, makes it more professional and unbiased - which is what we need. I don't know what a tag mean (does it disable editing and makes paragraphs somehow protected?). Well, I'm impressed too, a bit - I basically just copied your style and got used to it. Thanks but be careful. I'm a bit sloppy - so I'm not the best model, particularly where reference style is concerned. I'm afraid I get impatient with wanting to get an article ready. I have a butterfly mind and get distracted into other areas but my main area of interest is human rights-related issues (particularly Bosnia). The tag doesn't disable anything, it's simply a sign that the problem has been recognised by someone and so hopefully a breathing space will be allowed in which to deal with it. It's also a useful reminder when you go back and re-edit an article. In fact because there are quite a few references already in the article it shouldn't be vulnerable in the way that an article with very few references is.Opbeith (talk) 10:10, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello Mohamed - I've got your talk page on my Watchlist and saw the posting. You won't get a reply, this is a message from a Wikipedia "robot". It's meant to detect potential spam attempts (commercial or personal self-promotion), which is why the links have been deleted. I think they're appropriate because of the reference to NR's use of social media but others might disagree. I'm not sure whether it's worth the battle at the moment - there's a lot of life wasted in losing battles at Wikipedia. If you'd rather not wait, ask User:Vejvančický. He is one of the most fair and at the same time positive people I have come across at Wikipedia. If he gives you his objective opinion that the FB and Tr links are not acceptable then I would accept what he says. Videos question

Hello again, re the videos question, I don't think you could do an article unless there was something notable about the videos themselves. For example it's possible that someone might try writing an article about the video of the Srebrenica executions at Trnovo that Natasa Kandic produced to the ICTY because it had such a (temporarily) extraordinary impact in Serbia. It's certainly notable enough to have its own section in the Srebrenica genocide article - go to "2005 Release of Scorpions massacre video". However you might run into quite a lot of aggression if it isn't immediately obvious why an individual video (rather than the events the video shows) is "notable". I assume that you're likely to be wanting to use the videos to illustrate information in the article. However because Internet sites like YouTube and similar video sites don't exercise editorial control over uploaded contributions, clips at those sites aren't usually considered sufficiently "reliable sources" to be cited as references for information in an article. So if the video contains significant information - for example showing bodies at Salmaniya Hospital - the best way of using them as references to add to the article's content might be to include a URL in the External Links section that many WP articles have (and include a description in the entry, not just a bald URL). Remember though that I'm not someone who's an authoritative/reliable source on WP "policies". You could take a look at [[1]] and [[2]] makes some relevant points, but to get a proper answer ask one of the helpful administrators like User talk:Vejvančický - making sure you explain clearly how and why you want to use the reference to the videos.Opbeith (talk) 17:20, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

What I'm thinking of is making a wiki page where a group of people can collect videos, articles, pictures and such about the ongoing events in Bahrain. To be honest when I set up a wiki to do with a project that I was and am still involved with, it ended up with me doing quite a lot of work and no-one else felt comfortable enough with it to contribute in the way we'd envisaged. So I'd suggest thinking about a blog for something like you're envisaging rather than a wiki. As long as a blog is being kept up to date it also has a momentum of its own that it's harder for a wiki to create. I don't know whether you know how to Redirect. It's useful with names from non-Roman alphabets which may be transcribed in different ways. You create a new article under the alternative name, then you make the article's content the command "#Redirect" followed by a space and then the article's name within the linking pairs of square brackets. Yeah, it's been almost 2 weeks since the holiday started, I'm working on a video project with a small group currently, we are aiming to collect and document all videos about 2011 Bahraini uprising. (so far collected 4600+ and documented about 650 using Microsoft Access). I've been thinking about making a small Bahraini Wikipedia team, but that idea crashes with the fact that most people who are engaged in the political reform are weak in English & most of those who are good in English are rather afraid to get involved even with anonymous names. I was adding the information about the torture allegation to the A'ala Hubail article yesterday and thought I'd add a link to the Torture in Bahrain in article (which I tidied a little but needs further revision). You can put an explicit link in the "See Also" section at the bottom, but something else you can do which perhaps you don't know about is to embed a link in the text at a relevant point. I associated the word "tortured" in "he was tortured" with the article.

The way you do this is by inserting the standard pair of opening square brackets, followed by the name of the article you want to link to, then add the "pipe" symbol (2nd from the left on the top row of "Special characters" (= straight vertical line), then the word or phrase that you want to incorporate the link, as indicated by a blue colour in the body of the text, then the pair of closing square brackets, with no added spaces. If you want to see how it looks go to Edit at A'ala Hubail. Get back to me if you need help.

If it's confirmed that A'ala Hubail was tortured by deliberately damaging his feet, that would be a notable scandal, over and above the crime of torture. If you come across any more informative references please tell me. When I typed Tareq in WP search it redirected me to Tariq, so it is probably the more standard.

I'll check to see how he's referred to by the IBBF just to confirm, then if they use Tariq when I have a moment I'll try and sort out a Move and retitle the article. I don't know whether there's a Wikipedia convention for Al or Al- but for the time being I'm inclined to go for Al- which binds the two parts of the name together more effectively. Further developments

Following the news of the trials and Abdulhadi Alkhawaja's sentence, I've tidied up the article. Maybe you could have a look and check that I haven't messed anything up in the process and add anything significant that you think may be missing. I've included mention of UK Foreign Office and Amnesty International condemnation of the trial. Someone has edited the Mohammed Hubail article with news of his sentence and I've added a bit more info from the reference but it was only a brief report. I trust the Bahraini authorities have taken note of the fact that this time the world is watching them rather more closely and critically than it has in their previous attempts at creative justice. Presumably that means anyone sentenced already like Mohammed Hubail is out on licence, subject to recall, and anyone not yet convicted and sentenced has been granted some sort of bail. I hope the conditions of release aren't too Machiavellian. Unfortunately - whether or not realted to Google-Facebook developments today - Google Translate reckons the Facebook URL is invalid, but the Bahrain News Agency is a good reference. Hope you didn't mind me doing a bit of "tidying up", don't hesitate to reverse anything that you think may have changed something important. It's better not to use the big "highlighted" quotes too much. If you keep most quotes within ordinary quotation marks in the body of the text you conserve the impact of highlighting for the really important quotes. Also if a direct quotation isn't really necessary it's usually better to turn a quote into reported speech or simple narrative - full quotes are more appropriate where the wording itself or the fact of something being delivered as it was are important. Hi there - I was reading the article on RCSI-Bahrain and you appear to be the author of an edit saying that students were called to meetings following pro-democracy marches and that some students had their scholarships withdrawn. I noticed that this claim was unreferenced. Do you know the basis for the claim and - if so - could you let me know what it is or include it in the article? I didn't use a reference for this info. However, this could be one. You can already read about how far this went from the pro-government newspapers as well from here. I understand that this might not be ok with Wikipedia rules; I was new when making this edit. The original source of info is from the students whose their scholarships were withdrawn and fortunately they are back in college now (after signing some papers about loyalty to the ruling family and not participating in any protests or political activity).
