hi dudes

Welcome! edit

Hi Mmelhart, and welcome to Wikipedia! I've written some advice on editing here for students in Prof. Jackson's similar classes at Longy School of Music which you might find helpful. You'll find it here. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page (User talk:Voceditenore), or place {{helpme}} here on your talk page, ask your question, and another editor will come along to help. You might also be interested in WikiProject Classical music and WikiProject Composers. They have various guidelines for articles in this area and talk pages where you can ask advice from editors experienced in writing articles on classical music and related subjects. You'll find these guides particularly useful: WikiProject Composers: Guide to online research and WikiProject Composers: Copyright guidelines. The Teahouse edit

Me again. I also wanted to let you know about Wikipedia's Teahouse. It's a place providing great support for new editors. You can ask questions (no question is too basic) and get helpful answers and advice from experienced editors. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 07:43, 17 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

User:Mmelhart/sandbox edit

Hi Mmelhart. I made a couple of changes to your draft. First, I removed the image File:Lousycover.jpg from the infobox. As that is a copyrighted image uploaded under "fair use", it can only be used in the article it illustrates, i.e. Lousy with Sylvianbriar. Secondly, I changed the categories to more suitable ones and disabled them. Active categories can only appear on articles, not drafts. When your draft goes into article space, the categories can be re-enabled by removing the initial colon (:) from [[:Category:Joyful Noise Recordings albums]] and [[:Category:2014 albums]]. If you need any further help, don't hesitate to ask. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 08:24, 29 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! Thanks for the message. I'm working on improving my article draft so I can submit it to the article space before the due date tomorrow. I have two questions. First of all, I've read that copying and pasting text from sources is not acceptable, but I see a lot of album pages that quote reviews directly from the reviewer so I guess it's okay in that case? I'd love some clarification. Secondly, how do I upload a picture to my article? I'd like to insert a picture of the album art. Thanks so much for your help. Best, Mmelhart (talk) 21:41, 29 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mmelhart. First, quotes. Brief quotes from copyright sources are allowed, especially in the case of reviews. But there are a couple of important qualifications:

1. The quoted material must be brief, no more than two or three sentences.

2. The quoted material must be clearly marked as a quote, i.e. using quotation marks or the block quote format. The quote needs to have an inline citation to its source, and it is also good practice to attribute the author in the actual text of the article. Below are examples of the two types of quote formatting

Using quotation marks

According to Bernard Holland in the New York Times, "blah blah blah."[1] However, other reviewers were less positive and pointed to several problems with the orchestration.

  1. ^ Holland, Bernard (3 January 2006). "Example Review". New York Times

Using block quote

Bernard Holland wrote in the New York Times:

Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah. [1]

However, other reviewers were less positive and pointed to several problems with the orchestration.

  1. ^ Holland, Bernard (3 January 2006). "Example Review". New York Times

Wikipedia:Quotations has further guidance on this. Another point to remember when using quotes from reviews is they should reflect a balanced view of the critical reception. They should not be "cherry-picked" to present only positive assessments when negative assessments have been expressed in other sources (or even the same source). Hope that helps. • Me again. Now, about an image of the album cover. When you upload it, you'll need to provide a fair use rationale and follow several other requirements. Wikipedia:Uploading images has guidance. It's rather time-consuming and tricky to learn, plus you can't upload images unless you are an auto-confirmed editor, i.e. your account is at least 4 days old and you have made 10 separate edits to articles (not drafts or talk pages). Once you move your draft to article space, I'd be happy to upload the image for you using the one here and then add it to the article. Does that sound like a plan? Sounds good to me! I just finished my draft and submitted it for review. Thanks for your help! Best, Mmelhart (talk) 16:52, 30 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
It's evening here in the UK and I'm about to sign off. But I'll review the draft myself tomorrow and if there are no major problems will move it to article space and add the image. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 17:55, 30 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Lighght (album) edit

Hi Mmelhart. After some reference formatting and a few other tweaks, I have accepted your draft. You'll find it at Lighght (album) where you can continue to expand or improve it if you wish. I've also added the image of the album cover for you. Congratulations on your first Wikipedia article! Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 11:15, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Voceditenore!! I'm glad to have contributed my piece to the world of Wikipedia. Best, Mmelhart (talk) 01:20, 3 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
