How you can help

Hello there. I have a coupla questions regarding an article I am seeking to create. Is this the correct place to ask the questions? I have already read the FAQs etc but I still have certain questions. Thanks.Mlewis61 (talk) 20:32, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you can ask questions here. Just add your questions, and include {{helpme}} with them. If you want live help, you can join #wikipedia-en-help connect and ask your questions there. GorillaWarfare (talk) 06:02, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for getting back to me, GorillaWarfare. Please excuse me, but I am a "newbie." My first question: I am almost done writing and researching my article. The article is now in my sandbox. It is marked up and has footnotes, references, etc. Where, exactly, do I place the article, once I want to move it out of my sandbox? Is there any danger that the article will go "live" because I have included markups? Many thanks for your help on this.Mlewis61 (talk) 16:27, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have copyedited the draft a little and moved it to WT:Articles for creation/Borderline (band), the preferred location for drafts. I have also added a message box that has instructions on how to submit the draft for a review. Right now I'd say the sources are too thin for the draft's content - liner notes and the band's own website are primary sources, not the reliable third-party sources Wikipedia content should be based on. Thank you, Huon. I am still working a bit on the sourcing. Appreciate your help. Mlewis61 (talk) 19:48, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Another question, if I may. How do I get rid of that disambiguation in the name "Jim Rooney" in the second sentence of my article under creation? I would like the link to take us directly to the Jim Rooney/Nashville musician who is being referred to, rather than to three or four people who are all named James Rooney. If you know what I mean, that is. Thanks very much. Regards. Mlewis61 (talk) 20:40, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

You can use a WP:Piped link. If, for instance, Jim Rooney (music) is the one you want to link to, writing [[Jim Rooney (music)|Jim Rooney]] will produce Jim Rooney, and clicking on that will take you direct to where you want. The part before the "pipe" character (vertical bar) is the link destination, and the part after is what appears in the article. JohnCD (talk) 21:03, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Aha. Excellent advice, JohnCD. Thanks very much for the help. Mlewis61 (talk) 21:10, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Awesome news that the article was accepted! I will take steps to improve it and also have a photograph of the band that I would like to post. But first I must figure out how to post it. Thanks.Mlewis61 (talk) 21:33, 10 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Photographs come with copyright issues. With some few exceptions that likely don't apply here, we can only use photographs that have been published under a free license such as the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License so that everybody may re-use and modify them for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If the image you want to upload has been released under such a license you can upload it to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. Huon (talk) 23:16, 10 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for that advice on posting a photo, Huon. I realize that things get tricky because of coypright issues. Still, I wonder if I might be able to use a 1974 publicity photo of the band. This photo was already used in the packaging of the group's second album, when it was reissued by EMI in Japan in 2001. The photo is also used on the Real Gone record company's website. Perhaps I could use the photo, then place a footnote designation saying something like, "Photo by Eric Von Schmidt, courtesy of EMI/Universal Music Group." Do you think that might be acceptable? Or I also have an image of the group's album cover for their first album, and I could credit the artist and record company, perhaps. I just think the article would look better with a photo of some kind, if we can figure out how to do it legally. Thanks. Mlewis61 (talk) 16:10, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello there. For the article on Borderline (band), wonder if someone could please help me add an "Infobox" in the upper right. Apols but I am rather new as a Wikipedia contributor. I would like the "infobox" to say: Origin: U.S.A. / Genres: Country Rock, Americana, Roots Rock / Years Active: 1972-1974 , and so forth. Is it possible someone could please point me in the right direction of how to create and add this infobox? Thank you. Mlewis61 (talk) 16:52, 21 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

April 2014 question edit

I need to respond to JuTa who left me a message on Wikimedia Commons about a photo I tried to add to an article. The photo is a publicity shot of a rock band that has no copyright restrictions. Apparently I did not fill out the copyright tag correctly. I would appreciate advice on how to fill out the tag correctly and how to prevent the photo from being taken down. Thank you. I am confused by the instructions about how to create a proper copyright tag. Here is JuTa's message to me: Thanks for uploading File:Borderline1974.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) Mlewis61 (talk) 21:25, 15 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi, JuTa's WikiMedia talk page can be found [here]. You should be able to login there using your Wikipedia login/pw. Also, new comments should go on the bottom of the page. I've moved that for you. Incidentally, your user page at commons is [here]. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:41, 15 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

(edit conflict)In other words, further to my problem with photo copyright, I would like to hear specific advice on how to write the exact copyright tag for this photo. It is an old publicity photo taken by a record company. I do not believe we are in violation of anyone's copyright by using it. But I need specific advice on how, exactly, to phrase or fill out the copyright tag for this. Forgive me but I am somewhat new at this. Thank you. --Mlewis61 (talk) 21:39, 15 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much, Cyphoidbomb. Most helpful. Mlewis61 (talk) 21:58, 15 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
