WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. Hey Theodore! I've responded to BoogaLouie's comment, which I take great issue with. My opinion is that they wish to accuse the article of NPOV in order to push it into a very western-centric, explicitly anti-Gaddafi POV direction. I don't think they are consciously doing this, and accept their good faith on the issue, but it concerns me deeply. No worries! I was not criticising your comment on my talk page, more BoogaLouie's assertions over at the GAR page. I have had arguments with them over the trajectory of this page before (they have been very critical of much of my work there), and I felt – rightly or wrongly – that they were launching personal attacks against myself during that time, namely in implying that I was a Gaddafist apologist. GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. Thank you for volunteering to help resolve disputes at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. We're always in need of experienced editors. Just a couple of suggestions: First, please be sure that a dispute has been extensively discussed on article (or user) talk pages before opening it for discussion. If we do not insist on that (as all content dispute resolution requires), it contradicts Wikipedia's presumption that editors will work things out through collaboration and discussion by allowing editors to not even really try to do so. Second, be sure to add yourself to the volunteer list so that our status bot will recognize your edits as those by a volunteer, not one of the disputants. Both of those are just technicalities that we all have to learn, so no big deal, and I look forward to seeing you around DRN. Thanks again! As I said there, I think your analysis is spot on, but I think that the user in question needs to address his "disputes" on the article talk pages. The "cases" imply his issue is with me and me alone, and while I was the user who undid his (very problematic) edits, I don't intend to engage further aside from ensuring wp:npov and wp:blp aren't trampled in his attempts to get his partisan viewpoints into those articles. I hope this (and the slightly greater explanation in response to you on my talk page) help clarify. Really admire your good faith and willingness to try to help others resolve issues, though. Request for help in dispute resolution.

Hello. I found your name in a list of volunteers to help in a dispute resolution. I picked you as you are interested in history, and this topic has some relevance to this. I recently opened this dispute to prevent the escalation of an edit war with a "few" users who keep reverting back to their erroneous edit. The case in regard is with reference to the pages "Pashtun People" and "Pashtun diaspora" .

Please see Wikipedia dispute resolution notice board for details. In a nutshell, the users are trying to increase the number of Pashtuns in India from 11,000 to 11 million. The users cannot justify this increase. This has been going on for the last couple of months.

Please help if you can, else can you please point me in the right direction?

Keep Visual History but change the name: History of Visual Culture

I do agree with argemedia: "I am really sorry to say that to delete or to redirect Visual History would be a historical mistake for our common Encyclopedia. Visual History is a new science. Of course, it deals with Visual Culture, but it is a History of this Visual Culture, as you have a general History, a History of Art or Arts, a History of Medias, a History of Images. This History of Visual Culture is a global history of all visual matters : images, objects, arts, architectures, landscapes... It has been founded with the World Dictionnary of Images (in fact, not only images, but all aspects of visual culture from Prehistory) written by 475 authors from all over the World (publisher : Nouveau Monde). Nevertheless there is a problem with the name in English, because Visual History could mean also a way to show History through various images. So, my suggestion is to keep it but to change the name in order to make it more clear for everybody in English: History of Visual Culture. GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days! In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00. At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. Shouldn't current "Nightclub" entry be re-titled "Dance Club"?

The term "nightclub" was well-established (long before the advent of discotheques) as a term primarily referencing what's also known as a "cabaret."

In the US at least, the term "nightclub" continues to refer to a range of establishments open predominantly at night (potentially offering food or alcohol) that exist primarily to offer various forms of entertainment. Dance clubs are a form of nightclub, but so, too (unquestionably), are jazz clubs, comedy clubs, and many other forms of nighttime entertainment venues. The Wikipedia entry titled "nightclub," which discusses only dance clubs, is therefore grossly misleading.

The "nightclub" entry should be retitled "dance club," and an entirely new entry for "nightclub" should be created, surveying the range of venues -- or at the very least, recast as a "disambiguation" entry linking to entries for the various types of venues that the term "nightclub" subsumes.

I've entered the above as topic on the entry's "talk" page. It appears that this matter has been discussed under some of the other talk topics, but it hasn't been resolved.

To some extent, the problem may be a divergence in terminology between the US and the UK (where "nightclub" is apparently taken for granted as referring to dance clubs); the divergence may also be generational (derivative of youth-culture colloquialisms like "clubbing" or "club kids," generally associated with dance clubs). Ironically, I stumbled on this situation as a 64-year-old gay man from New York, now living in California, when I was seeking material on the 1970s disco scene, and the entry for "Discotheque" redirected me to "Nightclub" -- as if the two terms had an identical meaning.

Given that my father was a jazz afficionado who hung out at the 52nd Street jazz clubs in 1940s-50s NYC (my longtime sense of what constitutes a "nightclub"), I was utterly shocked!

What do you think of my retitling/disambiguation idea?

How can I most productively proceed in trying to resolve this without gargantuan effort? GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

There will be several changes compared to previous drives: This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively. Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed. The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified. An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created. Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! Antigovernment Page a disambiguation page or stub?

Hi I didnt understand what happened during dispute resolution on the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#Southern_Poverty_Law_Center I asked for guidance from a senior editor on a specific question: Is the antigovernment webpage a stub or a disambiguation page? I wasnt able to participate in the particular 36 hours that you were able to donate time to answer the question. I believe I made edits prior to your deadline but I assume you felt as thought the primary questions were answered. Whether so or not I was hoping as a senior editor you could offer me your opinion on the question (in bold is it WP:Stub or WP:D?). Thanks. Mrdthree (talk) 05:09, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Theodore!, I wanted to let you know I had closed the Southern Poverty Law Center dispute for a couple of reasons. There was no participation from the listed parties beyond the filing editor and went past the time we generally wait for everyone to participate, but also because this is mainly a "one against consensus" dispute. Technically if the editor could show a good argument per policy and guidelines that the consensus should change and everyone listed showed up, we could have kept it going. But it appears that the general consensus of the uninvolved editors was that linking to the disambiguation page was against guidelines. The best solution would be for editors to collaborate on creating a new page specifically for a link to "antigovernment" or to use existing page articles that could be anything from "Sedition" to "Conspiracy", depending on how the article is using they term. As usual, if you object in any reason, please feel free to re-open the filing, even if it falls into the archives.--Maleko Mela (talk) 23:32, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

I am on the list at Wikipedia:DRN/V#List of the DRN volunteers, but the bot didn't open it, and in fact when I manually changed the discussion to "open" the bot changed it back to "needs assist". WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers. Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now! On second thought: The DRN coordinator page says, "It will be best if you are active as a volunteer at DRN for at least the month preceding the date on which you are to take over the coordinator position so that you are familiar with the current issues, trends, and pending cases; if you are unable to do that, please consider posting a note to the DRN talk page asking for someone who has been active to take the position in your place." You've not edited Wikipedia at all since September 10. I'm going to take the liberty of moving your volunteer stint from December-January, 2014, to the open February-March, 2015, slot so that you can have the chance to be active at DRN during at least January (and if you don't take it then, I'm going to remove your name from the schedule altogether). If you object to any of this, even in the slightest, just drop a note on my user talk page and I'll gladly give it over to you during December-January without hesitation.
