Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Small World

It was good to talk at the Meetup and find that you're a regular now. Heading home, we passed the big video atrium outside Tottenham Court Road station and, by coincidence, it was showing NGC 1300 as part of a NASA-themed display. As as another follow-up, I find that the base I mentioned has now evolved into the Northwood Headquarters.

Not sure when I'll get back to Lincoln's Inn so will look out for photos from your visit. Andrew🐉(talk) 09:37, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

@Andrew Davidson: Thanks Andrew, it was good to catch up with you at the meetup, and I look forward to talking more at future meetups. :-) I've uploaded my photos at commons:Category:Lincoln's Inn (the 'At Lincoln's Inn 2023' filename series). The NASA photo is great, I'd add it to appropriate Commons categories except it seems to be enwiki-only? (something to talk about at future wikimeets?) I'll have to look into the history of Northwood Headquarters sometime! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:45, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

I usually upload here on Wikipedia as Commons adds another layer of complication that I don't have time for. And they don't accept the fair-use images that I'm often uploading.
I looked through your uploads from Lincoln's Inn. The pictures are good but lack detailed descriptions. For example, the room shown (right) seems unusual. It seems to be a vault which is architecturally interesting but, without a description, I'm just guessing.
That's the main challenge with photos -- it's easy to take lots of them but finding time to describe and organise them is difficult.
Andrew🐉(talk) 08:22, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
@Andrew Davidson: Uploading here means you can't use them on Wikidata, other language Wikipedias, and more - which is personally a big part of my workflow. I don't do fair use images, since I think that they obscure the need for freely licenced media in the articles they're used in. I'm prioritising uploading my photos, and then going back through them on a second pass to categorise them better, although descriptions are a way down the priority list (I sort them out for images I'll propose for quality images on Commons, otherwise I hope it's obvious through the categories). BTW, if I recall correctly, the vault is under commons:Category:Lincoln's Inn Old Hall. Hope that's helpful, happy to chat about this all at a future wikimeet. :) Thanks.
