I know was a bit pissed off yesterday
But please don't change that many pages that fast, because there are reasons for using that extra parameter, and it was clear in my opinion that you could never have known that at 6 pages per minute. I also spend 20 minutes checking the villages A-G in Suriname and French Guiana which was frustrating as well. KittenKlub (talk) 18:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @KittenKlub: I was checking them as I went, the speed was due to semi-automation. I'll go slower in the future. Apologies for where I got them wrong, I'm checking the reverts when I see them, and I'm happy to double-check any cases you want - and to help create new categories on Commons as well. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:54, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- BTW, with [1], commons:Category:Albina, Suriname has commons:Category:Bigiston as a subcategory, do both really need to be linked to in the article? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:56, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- It is better explained at Marowijne District. That whole area is tribal (and therefore autonomous ) But the capital was founded by a European, and is therefore NOT tribal and part of the regular government. The problem is that the Albina resort is very big and happens to contain a cluster of villages (arranged per tribe / maternal lineage) who are tribal. The real problem is that an article for Bigiston is just a paragraph, because that's all you'll find about what 200 people living in a village without internet. Therefore Bigiston is mentioned at the District as a village, but has been added to the resort to prevent super stubs which will remain stub for decades. KittenKlub (talk) 19:06, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @KittenKlub: Are you sure there isn't enough for a separate article? There seems to be a reasonably lengthy description of the village in "Winti practices in Bigiston" (currently a reference in the article). It may be short, but I don't think it would be a super-stub. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:24, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Actually you are right. There's much more in the article, but I am sometimes lazy as well. Also my experience with submitting unfamiliar articles isn't that great. Luckily that reference is English, but I have had AfDs because somebody refused to accept clearly notable pages (because there is no English info... and tons of non-English info) and that happened to others as well, so I am someitmes reluctant to submit something if it is too small. Misplaced commons category
You edited several of the articles I started about forts in Portugal for the reason of "Misplaced Commons Category". If they were misplaced why not correctly place them instead of deleting the link? Thanks. Roundtheworld (talk) 18:48, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Roundtheworld: 'Misplaced' as in the link doesn't match the article, not misplaced in the article. I try to correct the links whenever I can, but I haven't found matching commons categories for the ones I've been removing them from - can you help find/create them? Thanks. 18:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel: I don't understand your reasoning. Most of the articles you edited are about forts that, collectively, make up what are known as the Lines of Torres Vedras. The link was to the Commons Category for the Lines of Torres Vedras. So I think the link perfectly well matches the articles. Roundtheworld (talk) 10:15, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Roundtheworld: They should have individual categories, like commons:Category:Forte de São Vicente. I can help set those up if you want, looking in commons:Category:Lines of Torres Vedras there's a number of photos but the forts are all mixed together there. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:29, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Roundtheworld: OK, I've worked through Category:Lines of Torres Vedras and commons:Category:Lines of Torres Vedras to create individual Commons categories and to link to them from the articles, how do they look? Did I miss any articles or photos? Also, I see that most of the photos were by yourself, thank you for uploading them to Commons! Did you take any additional photos of each fort that you could also upload, please, to get a better feeling for the places? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:35, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel:. Many thanks. I've created a couple more categories and moved the files from commons:Category:Lines of Torres Vedras. I'll see what I can find on my phone for additional photos although it might be difficult to sort out one fort from another!Roundtheworld (talk) 07:27, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi. I see that you removed the Commons Category link from the above article, but please would you kindly let me know why? Is it because the images in that category are not of John Hardy MP? It would help me to know this, as I would then need to check that the sculpture images in that category are correctly categorised. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 09:13, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- Update. Further to the above, I think I see what the problem was: a family category which had been misunderstood to be representative of one member of that family. I have reorganised that category on Commons into an umbrella category with subcategories for the individuals. I have requested user:Jarekt to sort out the associated Wikidata template as I do not have the skills to do that. Please kindly check that you are happy with this, and let me know if there is any remaining problem. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 09:54, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Storye book: Yes, that was it, thanks for reorganising the category. I've tweaked the commonscat templates here, and added the sitelinks, the infobox will be automatically added in a day or so. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 10:44, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Cochrane Update
Hi Mike, I hope that you are keeping well. I noticed that there were no updates posted for June or July 2020 on the update bot. Is the bot working alright? Our volunteers have been really getting through the updates. If I can help with anything to check on the bot please let me know! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Cochrane_update Thanks. Jenny JenOttawa (talk) 18:03, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- @JenOttawa: It's returning a warning 'The regex search timed out', not sure if that's the cause of this. I'll look into it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:22, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for offering to looking into it. The archive appears to have worked at least! JenOttawa (talk) 18:24, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- @JenOttawa: It looks like pubmed have changed their website (including the URLs), so the old way of finding the ID of the new article no longer works. I'm reworking the code now, not sure how long it will take. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:51, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- @JenOttawa: I think the new code is working, can you double-check the updates it is identifying please? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:58, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Mike, thank you for fixing this. I checked and the updates look to be working well and the bot is populating the page with new Updates Needed. I really appreciate you taking the time to fix the code for this project. Take good care! JenOttawa (talk) 15:30, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Date precision
There is a potential for an error when comparing because the getDatePrecision
function can return an empty string. I've created Template:Date precision to encapsulate the #invoke and trap the empty string, replacing it with 0 by default, although that can be changed by supplying the template with a second unnamed parameter:
- Darach Ó Séaghdha (Q52063097):
{{Date precision|P569|qid=Q52063097}}
→ 7 - Douglas Adams (Q42)
{{Date precision|P569|qid=Q42}}
→ 11 - No qid:
{{Date precision|P569|qid={{{qid|}}} }}
→ 0 - No qid, default set to 99:
{{Date precision|P569|qid={{{qid|}}}|99}}
→ 0
Testing for precision can be done like this, and the default output can be changed by assigning the default a large number:
- Darach Ó Séaghdha (Q52063097):
{{#ifexpr:{{Date precision|P569|qid=Q52063097}} > 8 |This if it's year or smaller|This if it's more than a year}}
→ This if it's more than a year - Douglas Adams (Q42):
{{#ifexpr:{{Date precision|P569|qid=Q42}} > 8 |This if it's year or smaller|This if it's more than a year}}
→ This if it's year or smaller - No qid:
{{#ifexpr:{{Date precision|P569|qid={{{qid|}}} }} > 8 |This if it's year or smaller|This if it's more than a year}}
→ This if it's more than a year - No qid, default set to 99:
{{#ifexpr:{{Date precision|P569|qid={{{qid|}}}|99}} > 8 |This if it's year or smaller|This if it's more than a year}}
→ This if it's more than a year
Compare with:
{{#ifexpr:{{#invoke:WikidataIB|getDatePrecision|P569|qid={{{qid|}}}}} > 8|This if it's year or smaller|This if it's more than a year}}
→ This if it's more than a year
See if it's any use to you. I know about "yet another template to export", but it might still be the cleanest way of avoiding errors on some pages. --RexxS (talk) 19:33, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @RexxS: Thanks! Any chance that could be built into WikidataIB, like checkBlacklist, so the value to check can be passed to the function and a True/False (or equivalent) returned for use in an #if function? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:38, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- But do you want to check bigger, equal or less than <the value to check>? --RexxS (talk) 19:49, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- I expect that most uses would be 'more precise than'. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:50, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hmmz - I dunno. I think it's more flexible to let the template do the test. How about if I modify getDatePrecision to take a default value that is returned when the Wikidata is invalid? Then the function could be set to 0 or 99 or whatever in those cases? Or should I simply assume it always wants a numeric value, never nil? --RexxS (talk) 19:56, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- That would work, just return 0 precision if there's no value set. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:01, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, that's done.
getDatePrecision
will return 0 instead of nil if the data is invalid. I've set it so that you can supply a second unnamed parameter to change that 0 to any other number for invalid data, but that probably won't be used much, if ever. --RexxS (talk) 20:15, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, that's done.

- The last week was our quarterly prototyping week. We worked on the following projects. None of them are ready for prime-time yet but we'll continue with them.
- Slices: We've had a lot of requests for accessing dumps of a smaller part of Wikidata's data since rarely anyone needs the complete data in Wikidata. The tricky part is figuring out which part is needed and if any of that can be generalized. We looked into for example how to make dump generation faster so we could potentially produce more smaller dumps that only cover a part of Wikidata's data, either thematically (e.g. humans) or by type of data (e.g. only statements and English labels and aliases but not sitelinks or descriptions).
- REST API: As part of our effort to make it easier to access Wikidata's data for programmers we looked into a REST API. We tried to see if we could cover the existing action API modules in a REST API. We could. We'll take this as input for our ongoing API work now.
- Improving quality ratings through ORES: ORES can judge the quality of an Item automatically. It is currently not very good at it however. We tried a few things to make it more accurate and found some easy wins we'll probably make happen in the next weeks.
- Query manipulator: One of the ways we could potentially improve the load situation of the Wikidata Query Service is by automatically analyzing and then redirecting a bunch of queries to other systems that are more suitable for that particular type of query. The nice thing about that would be that the person/program sending the query wouldn't have to care about it but it'd be done automagically for them. We tried to build such a system and the results look very promising but more work/experimenting is needed, especially together with the WMF Search team.
