Translations

Hi Migaela. I noted from our recent conversation at the Teahouse that you have now created Draft:Arnulf Lüchinger and it has been submitted for review. I wanted to mention that there is one aspect of translation you need to follow but haven't done yet. This is explained at Help:Translation#License requirements, pointing out that you should say where you obtained the original article you translated: this is part of attributing copyright correctly. As the Help page explains, there is a template {{translated page}} you should put on the Talk Page of your draft. Regards. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:46, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mike Turnbull. The original German article 'Arnulf Lüchinger' was created by me with the user name 'Benutzer:MGJP'. I wanted the same name for the English article, but the English Wikipedia did not accept 'User:MGJP', therefore I used 'User:Migaela', (the German 'Benutzer:MGJP' and the English 'User:Migaela' are the same person). Perhaps it is possible to use a related user name for the English article like: User:MGJP, User:MGJP..., User:MGJP-EN, etc. - Regards. User:Migaela (talk) 19:30, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Migaela It doesn't matter that you have alternative account names on English and German Wikipedia's and hence feel that you are translating your "own" original. Under the terms of the Creative Commons licenses that Wikipedia uses, when creating the derivative work (the translation) you must declare where you got the original from, not least because other editors have contributed to de:Arnulf Lüchinger, even if only in a minor way. Also, placing the {{translated page}} template on the Talk Page of the article helps future editors find sources, which someone my have added to the German version that's not yet reflected in ours. Incidentally, it is quite acceptable (indeed encouraged) that you mention on the User Pages of both of your accounts that you are also editing under multiple account names, as explained at WP:VALIDALT. There is a template {{User Alias}} for doing this. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:58, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Another thought relating to your global account. I can see from this link that the username is "MGJP", not "Benutzer:MGJP". Wikipedia accounts are globally valid, so you should have been able to edit on the English Wikipedia as "MGJP". I suspect that the reason English Wikipedia didn't let you create a new account with the Username "MGJP" was because it already existed - and was yours! You can check this by logging on as usual to your German account on a German page and afterwards navigating to one of the English pages and trying to edit here. You should find that this is allowed. As you can see from this link I have accounts all over the place (mainly when I read a foreign-language article) and I've edited in several languages.
